ESSEX CLAMFEST 2010

image

The Essex Division of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the twenty-eighth annual Essex ClamFest on Saturday, October 23 (rain date: Sunday, October 24), from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Memorial Park in Essex.

The highlight of the day will be the Clam Chowder Tasting, a competition that pits area restaurants against one another to determine who serves the best chowder on Cape Ann. Several local restaurants are expected to serve up their favorite chowder recipes starting at 12:00 noon and ending at 2:00 p.m.

The chowder will be judged by Legal Seafoods President & CEO Roger Berkowitz, Senator Bruce Tarr, Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, Essex Town Selectman Jeff Jones, Chamber President Kathy Low, Amy Harnois of TD Bank and local personality Ed Collard. The public will also have the opportunity to sample and vote on their favorite chowder.

In addition to the Chowder competition, an interesting variety of activities has been planned, including an arts and crafts area; entertainment throughout the afternoon; the Lions Club food pavilion; an Ipswich Ale station; organization, church, and non-profit tables; a number of rides and games for the children; a health fair, a free flu shot clinic from 11am-3pm, and a raffle for a catered clambake by Woodman’s to benefit the Essex Elementary School. The crafts area and the rides will be open to the public starting at 11:00 a.m.

Sargent House Museum Writing Closet Exhibit Thinktank

Hi Joey,
The Sargent House Museum would like to invite people to tour Judith Sargent Murray’s writing closet this coming Saturday at 11am and 2pm.  It’s one of only four remaining in the U.S. and the place where she wrote some of her most important work.  We are interested in the thoughts and questions that people have about the space.  The Musuem has a small grant to develop an interactive exhibit focused on the writing closet and Judith Sargent Murray.  Email us at sargenthouse.org if you’re interested in attending one of the tours.
Thanks for helping us get the word out!

Cape Ann Skeptics Meet October 19th At Dog Bar

Cape Ann Skeptics is an informal group of people interested in looking at issues from a skeptical point of view. Skeptic thinking is rational, critical and scientific. A skeptic is not a cynic nor a contrarian. Rather, it’s someone who searches for the truth based on what is provable by rigorous science-based reasoning. At the meetings we start with a presentation followed by questions, sometimes answers, and always a lively discussion.
Skeptics in the Pub is an international phenomena with meetings occurring in most major and many smaller cities.

Skeptics in the Pub

The second meeting of Skeptics in the Pub will be October 19, beginning at 6:00 PM at the Dog Bar, 65 Main St. The meeting will kick off with time to meet, greet and order food, then Bob Bowles will give a talk entitled “Internet Lies and PCs” followed by Q and A’s and discussion. This gathering is  sponsored by Cape Ann Skeptics and is the second of the regularly scheduled meetings to be held every 3rd Tuesday of the month. All skeptics or those interested in skepticism are invited. For more information or to join our mailing list, visit www.capeannskeptics.com or email rich@capeannskeptics.com.

Food For Thought- Heather Atwood

As a painter and writer, Heather Atwood spent a lot of time waiting on tables in great restaurants. While struggling with color and line, she was also learning how to roast a great chicken, and what it means to balance textures in a dish. She’s been interested in good food ever since. Married, the mother of two daughters, Heather now lives in Rockport, Mass. and is the food columnist for the Gloucester Daily Times. She is featured regularly in Taste of the Times videos and her writing can also be seen in the Wednesday food section of the Times.
