Good Morning Joey,
Here are some shots of people and the Rocky Neck Plunge.
Happy New Year!

Hello all,
Three things:
* The Center WORKS! At Thursday’s Pew Party, we removed and moved the pews, creating the kind of open space we’ve been envisioning, just perfect for our first neighborhood potluck feast that followed. A great gang of folks, young and old, artists and non-artists, from all parts of this amazing community had the chance to meet, connect, talk, and just be together. Which is exactly the point of this venture: to develop a place where the Rocky Neck Art Colony can help to strengthen our community spirit as we create, recreate, and celebrate with our shared passion of place, the arts, culture, and community. The feeling on Thursday was one of community and potential, of inspired discussion and just plain fun. We are sure to have many more such moments in our future…!!
* Be one of the 100%: We are nearing our initial fund drive goal; we’re at just under $20,000. Now that the Feasibility Study is funded, work on it will start very soon. However, we have only received donations from about 1/3 of the Rocky Neck Art Colony members! Back in September, when we voted 55-3 in favor of this project, we discussed striving for a 100% contributing membership. Having the strength of that 100% will go far to help us secure grants and other funding for the building, so we need you to contribute at any level – $10 or $1000, it’s up to you – it’s the 100% that matters now…it’s easy on the website at www.rockyneckartcolony.org. We’ll be making some phone calls in the next couple of weeks to those members who have not yet donated – we’re happy to talk about the project with you and answers any questions you may have.
* PEWS FOR SALE: Steve Archer has begun, with some able assistance by Doug Fox and others, to tear up the rug and floor tile, revealing a wide pine floor that will be refinished in mid-January. Steve would like to sell eight of the pews (8 1/2′ long), to pay for the floor work and to buy new front railings (to build them to code). We sold one pew today, and the rest are first come-first served! They are beautiful painted oak pews, in perfect shape, $250./each. You can contact me or Steve (sarcherkw@gmail.com) to pick one up.
Yours as always,
Karen

L to R: Elynn Kroger, Kathleen Gerdon Archer, Tom Nihan
This weekend until Christmas, Tom Nihan, Elynn Kroger, Patti Sullivan and Kathy Archer will be showing their work at a new gallery called Cape Ann Studios, 2 Tuna Wharf in Rockport. Weekends, 11 to 5 or call 978-879-6211 to make an appointment. If you’re in the area be sure to stop by.

The other day I went for a drive to get some photos of Christmas decorations at local shops. I tried Rocky Neck, but everything was closed and dark, so I ended up at Bearskin Neck in Rockport. Most shops and galleries were closed, but some have very nice Christmas decorations (which I’ll share in another post). I had the pleasant surprise of finding East Gloucester resident Eugene Quinn still in his studio with an “open” sign in the window.

We had a very nice conversation. Although he and I have never met, it turns out we have met some of the same people in the past because one of his paintings ended up at one of the places where I studied in the seminary. His work is very beautiful:

Stop by and visit the gallery! His work is worth seeing first-hand. His regular hours from now until Christmas will be 10AM-5PM (although he may be around off-hours at times). His gallery is at 54 Bearskin Neck Rd., Rockport, MA 01966.

Hello friends and supporters of The Center at Rocky Neck (our new working title for the former Christian Science Church):
This is a friendly reminder that we will meet at The Center next Wednesday, November 16, at 7 pm.
Since our first community-wide meeting on September 15:
* the Rocky Neck Art Colony voted 55-3 to move forward with next steps toward the building’s purchase, specifically, to conduct a Feasibility Study (est. $10,000) and to pay for the option to purchase the building ($1,000/month for the 2012 calendar year). We are in the process of our initial fundraising drive to collect donations toward those efforts. A convenient Paypal system is now in place at www.rockyneckartcolony.org.
* Jay Paget, the lead administrator for the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Cultural Facilities Grant visited the building and offered support and encouragement through our application process in the upcoming 2012 funding cycle.
* Mayor Kirk conducted her State of the City address at The Center last weekend (photo attached) and again offered her support for the building project, indicating that Community Preservation funding may be available.
* At her fundraiser luncheon yesterday, Rep. Ann Margaret Ferrante enthusiastically discussed the building project as a beacon of cultural economic development for East Gloucester.
* Necessary building improvements are underway by present owners Steve and Kathy Archer.
At Wednesday’s meeting, we’ll discuss:
1. planning and development to date;
2. The Center’s mission and vision;
3. the role of the RNAC and the broader community in The Center’s programming;
4. The Center’s governance and management.
If you have any concerns or questions before the meeting, please feel free to call me or contact any of the other officers of RNAC.
PLEASE come and show your support – we hope to see you there!
Yours,
Karen Ristuben

That the Schooner Roseway hauled out this morning at Marine Railways? She’s a beauty. Stop by the Railways and check her out. Here’s some interesting history about her.
History of the Schooner Roseway
In the fall of 1920 a Halifax, Nova Scotia, newspaper challenged the fisherman of Gloucester, Massachusetts, to a race between the Halifax fishing schooners and the Gloucester fleet. Therefore many schooners, such as Roseway, built at this time were not strictly designed for fishing but in order to protect American honor in the annual races.

Last Light by Diane Panarelli Miller
From Monday, October 3 through Sunday, October 23, portrait and landscape artist Dianne Panarelli Miller’s works will be on display in the Gordon Grant Room. Miller has received many awards locally and nationally in the thirty years she has been painting and is represented in many fine galleries, as well as in hundreds of private collections. She is a signature member of the New England Plein Air Painters and has the distinguished honor of having been named “Copley Master” at the Copley Society in Boston. She is also a member of the Portrait Society of America and Oil Painters of America. A full-time painter, Miller is comfortable doing portraits and landscapes as well as murals and cityscapes. In an effort to produce work unlike anyone else, she paints in her “own voice” from life and not photographs. To see more of her work, visit www.diannepmiller.com.

The Opening of the Out of Africa exhibit of photography and paintings by Judith Monteferrante, Rich Seeley and Roger Salisbury was a big hit, and an amazing grand finale guest artists exhibit opening for the first season of Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on Rocky Neck. We have never had so many people packed inside and waiting outside the Gallery for an event this season – and we’ve had many very well attended events. A gallery talk was scheduled for 6:00 pm, but the crowd was so thick that it was impossible for the artists to even consider giving a talk. Neighbors watching the flow of people in and out, estimated visitors throughout the evening at between 150 and 200 people. Kudos to the Gloucester Daily Times for putting the opening info on the front page of Saturday’s paper, as many people who came said they had learned about it from the Times. For those of you who wanted to see the exhibit but couldn’t make it to the opening, or those who came but couldn’t see the work because of all the people, the show will be up through October 6, so please come back and see the exhibit daily from noon to 8:00 pm. There are also videos of the animals and a digital frame with a slideshow of many of the photos taken but not physically exhibited in the gallery. This exhibit is truly a great adventure, an African safari that you can vicariously experience through these artists’ work. Don’t miss it.

What is your medium? I am a photographer, painter (primarily oils, acrylics and mixed media) and writer (including being a regular contributor to Good Morning Gloucester)
How long have you been an artist? I guess all my life, but began actively pursuing my life as an artist in 1990 after leaving the corporate world.
Where do you get your inspiration? Now that I am living on Cape Ann, my inspiration is everywhere I look, everyone I meet, and everything I learn about this amazing place. It’s a little overwhelming. I’m a type A corporate risk manager turned artist. I’ve traveled alot, lived many places, operated a number of galleries and non-profit cultural centers, and have also worked as a marketing services provider to artists for many years providing art printing, matting and framing, artwork photography, web design, and other services. Until I close the gallery on October 15, at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck Ave., G3 on Madfish Wharf. Always on my website at www.khanstudiointernational.com, on October 8th and 9th at the Annisquam Arts & Crafts Show at Village Hall in Annisquam. |
I met Rick a Big fan of GMG At The State Fish Pier. He enjoys checking it out everyday to see what’s going on here on our Island Paradise. He thought the Sunday Mug Ups were by invitation only. I told him and any Fan like him can come down Sunday Mornings at 10am and get some Coffee and some great food. No obligation to buy anything at all. Rick seems like a great guy and I look forward to talking to him again.
Here’s a photo of Rick Representin’ and The Eurodam video I took today. Rick also is my color commentary on the last part of this video when you see the shuttle boat arriving at the CruisePort.
