A few shots from Easter at St. Joachim’s in Rockport

On Sunday I had the two morning services at St. Joachim’s in Rockport. I snapped a few photos in between:

For Catholics, Easter (like Christmas) doesn’t end on the main day of celebration; it continues to be celebrated with special solemnity for 8 days, and with lesser liturgical solemnity for an entire “season” of fifty days, ending on Pentecost. So, marshmallow “peeps” and all the other Easter candy standards are still in season, if anyone’s looking for an excuse to take advantage of “post-Easter” candy sales!

lighthouse
Also known as Cape Ann Light Station, these twin lights are the only surviving multiple lights on the coasts of the United States. The original 45-foot towers were constructed and lit in 1789—making them among the oldest of America’s lighthouses. The stout 124 foot granite towers seen today replaced the original lights in 1861. The two towers were constructed so that when a ship sites on both towers, they point to true north—allowing sailors to check and adjust their compasses.

White light flashing five times at 20 second intervals.

Thacher Island is located about a mile offshore of Rockport. The island may be viewed from several locations in Rockport and from the Bass Rocks (Atlantic Road) in Gloucester. The Thacher Island Association provides boat service to the island for members of the Association. Kayaking is another popular way to visit the island.

Seven Swans a Swimming

Dear Joey,

I’m sure you know all about the family of 7 swans that spent most of the summer and fall at Front Beach in Rockport (see photo 1868, and our granddaughter Brooke confronting the “father swan” in 1888).  Inspired by this, my wife, Judy Alpert’s fourth recent Bas relief wall mural is called Seven Swans a Swimming and is displayed in the picture window of her studio, Town and Sea,  at 93 Main St. in Rockport (see photos attached).  The puzzle pieces are stoneware (fired to 2300 deg F) with glazes mostly custom mixed by the artist.  Thought your audience might be interested.

Rockport Greasy Pole Video

I think two different people sent this in, JP from Rockport and Vicki Gamage.  Not sure if they saw it on the same site or not or if they both just happened to run across it on youtube.  If they saw it someplace on another site let me know and I’ll credit them.

Rubber Duck is Done

Christmas Shopping.  Done in 60 minutes. Bananas, Fred Bodin Photo, The Cave, then a speed run in Rockport to finish it off at Tuscan Designs and stocking stuffers at Tucks Candies.

If you screwed up, don’t have that killer gift then go to Rockport and hit the last store on the right before you turn to Front Beach. Grab anything. They go with everything and you can put pasta on them, olive oil in them, then hang them on the wall when you’re done because it’s art. Rubber Duck doesn’t even clash and the blue really shows off her eyes.
