Chelsea Berry will be Aurelia Nelson’s featured guest on her North Shore 104.9 show Curtain Up this Sunday, Jan 20, at 9am. You don’t even have to get out of bed. Just tune your clock radio to 104.9 and set it to go off at 8:59am. Lie in bed and listen comfortably.
If you saw Jon Butcher on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, you’ll know he’s playing at Shalin Liu tonight with James Montgomery, Charlie Farren & David Hull. As of this post there were about 15 tickets left and you can get them here. Jon may ask Allen to join him on a song they performed together on the Local Music Seen.
As for the rest of the weekend, we honestly don’t have any idea how you’re going to choose from over 2 dozen excellent shows — and plenty of them early enough to take the kids. Here’s the complete live music lineup.
GOOD LUCK!

Weather forecasters call it a heatwave around here when it’s over 90 °F (32.2 °C) for three days in a row.
For the past 3 days, we’ve had good music starting early enough to take the kids out, so I’m declaring it a kid-friendly-music wave.
Tonight you can take the kids to see the Honky Tonk Women of Gloucester at Seaport Grille as early as 6pm. And there’s plenty more later (see schedule here) if you want to keep them up late, or you’ve got a sitter, or you don’t have kids. One of our favorites, Pete Lindberg, is at the Dog Bar at 9. Here’s a video of Pete at Celebrate Gloucester 2010:
And here’s an early 60’s heatwave classic to remind us where the inspiration for much of the music we love today comes from:
I missed Joan Osborne with Paula Cole @ Shalin Liu back in October. Did she sing this? She does an excellent version. Check this out:

In Gloucester:

Here’s a list of the live music (dozens of choices). The whole shebang goes from 6pm to midnight and is one of the best entertainment values of the year. You can download a map and complete schedule (in table format) here. Plus if the weather cooperates (which it just might) you can see the moon, Jupiter and its moons, and galaxies so far away they’ll convince you that you really are as insignificant as you thought — a great way to begin the new year. The Zip Line Kid and I are still talking about how much fun we had looking through the telescopes set up by the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club at Dock Sq.
Last year we were too late to get in to see Cape Ann Big band at Shalin Liu. We won’t make that mistake this year. Here’s a sample of what we missed:
Plenty of opportunities to get into the party spirit tonight (see complete live music listings here). Might be a good time to check out Mike O’Connell and his excellent band at Minglewood starting at 9pm.

Just in case you haven’t heard, Dan King is moving early next year. So, in honor of one of Gloucester’s most important music figures, we had him down to the Cape Ann TV Studio to film a special two-part Local Music Seen farewell show with Allen Estes — and guess who showed up? The great J.B. Amero! Boy, did those guys have fun together! Check out this gem we caught after we were done taping and the boys just started jammin:
You can catch the Part 1 premiere of this special farewell show tonight at 6:30 on Cape Ann TV Channel 12. It will air again on Friday at 1:30pm and Sunday at 6pm.
Now before we started taping we asked Dan if he would represent GMG and here’s what he said — PAY ATTENTION, JOEY!

The Atlantics (circa 1980) Fred Pineau, B. Wilkinson, Tom Hauck, Paul Caruso, Bobby Marron.
Yesterday, Joey published this Men at Work 4x fast video with music by Gloucester musician Tom Hauck (founder of the Atlantics). So, how did he find that music? Did he go to iTunes and listen to all 8 million songs? Did he remember seeing the Atlantics open for the Ramones in 1976 at The Club in Cambridge and say, Hey Tom’s music would be perfect for this video? Did he ask Kim Smith (Tom’s wife)? Nope.
Joey found Tom’s music on gimmesound.com. Truth be told, he called me first to ask if I had any ideas for up-tempo songs by Gloucester musicians that would fit the spirit of his 4x video. I sent him some ideas, and after listening to a bunch of tunes on gimmesound he chose Tom’s song Stand Up. Of course, he asked Tom for permission first.
If you need music by Gloucester area artists, you can easily get a list of them here. But remember, before you use any music BE SURE TO GET THE ARTIST’S PERMISSION! It’s easy. There’s a CONTACT ARTIST button on every gimmesound Artist Profile (right next to the music player controls). Just click it and type a brief message — be sure to include a way to contact you. Your request will automatically be sent to the artist.
And to all you artists out there, if you want Joey to use your music, just let him know.
Now for the other tidbits about yesterday’s 4x movie. You’ve probably heard of Alfred Hitchcock, right? Besides being one of Hollywood’s greatest directors, Hitch is known for a cameo appearance in all his films beginning with The Lady Vanishes in 1938. Now, if you look at Joey’s movie carefully, you’ll see a cameo by Homie starting at 2:01 for 3 seconds. Hitchcock Homie lands atop the trailer and then flies away.
You’ll also notice that Joey does almost all the work — and you might conclude that’s why he’s fit and trim. But you’d be wrong. The real reason is that nobody he works with is trying to lose weight. See my Monday LOL post for a more complete explanation.
For all you college kids home for the weekend and looking for a good time in advance of your annual Tryptophan fix, check out the HUGE PARTY SCENE in town tonight!
Here’s a video for all you Tryptophan junkies featuring another Joey you might find fun — especially if you were at that Romones show in Cambridge:

Thanks to the generosity of musicians and audience, we raised over $400 for relief efforts in the Rockaways on Sunday night. Thanks also go out to the Hive and David Brooks, for providing the venue as well as the Van Ness Group, Joanne Silva, the Gloucester Times and the Beacon for helping publicize the event. Terrific musical performances were enjoyed by all. Ron Schrank, Allen and Dylan Estes, Guy Zacardi, the Satch Kerans Band, the Honky Tonk Women of Gloucester, Just Like Newman, the Gordonaires, Ed Sakurai, and finally the BFs kept things rocking until Cape Ann’s own hurricane survivor and New Orleans native Henri Smith, backed by Tucker Lindquist, Ira Levine, Janice Fullman and John Buckner, ended with a soulful and heartfelt rendition of “Wonderful World” that really drove the message home…we are all in this together.
Thanks again everyone for helping spread some love in a dangerous, but indeed wonderful world.
Will Hunt
I don’t usually embed videos with commercials in them on GMG, but this one is worth it:

Why it’s TB4NB4T of course! Translation: Tuesday Before the Night Before Thanksgiving. Yup, that’s today and there’s plenty happening tonight too. Check it out here. Most music venues in Gloucester offer special entertainment for tomorrow, sometimes referred to as Homecoming or NB4T (you can decipher this based on the translation, above). Check out tomorrow’s full live music lineup here.
Now, maybe I’m old, but when I was a kid, none of this existed. It was just plain Thanksgiving. I don’t ever remember shopping the next day. I did go to the parade in NYC a couple of times (people called it the Macy’s Day Parade). There was no Internet, so no Cyber Monday. And the day before was spent cooking or travelling or both. We sang Over the river and through the woods (the Thanksgiving version, not Christmas).
Now there’s so much to do it makes your head spin. So, take Joey’s advice from this post, buckle your chinstraps, enjoy the ride and have a very happy 21st Century Thanksgiving!

OK, we’ve gotten some questions about this benefit. People asking, Who are the Rockaways? It’s not who; it’s where. The Rockaways are a section of New York that was just creamed by Superstorm Sandy. People who live there are a long way from getting back to normal and need help (see articles here and here). One of my heroes, physicist Richard Feynman, was born in Far Rockaway. Among other discoveries, Feynman figured out what caused the Challenger Space Shuttle to crash. Check out this video for a great story of how he reluctantly agreed to join the Commission investigating the Challenger disaster and what happened next:
Speaking of videos, we’ve got some new ones on gimmesound — and we now feature them more prominently on the Home Page. If you’ve got a music video you think we should feature, leave a comment and let us know.
And what a weekend for Live music, which starts at 1:30pm today and 11:30am tomorrow and goes on into the late night both days! See full live music schedule here.

Last night, Chelsea Berry played the The Bitter End, New York City’s oldest and most iconic club. Boy that place brings back memories — I wish I had been there!
Look at her in this picture. Even without her excellent band she still rocks!
I can hear it now.
And while Chelsea was in NYC, Marina Evans is out west. Check out this excerpt from her latest tour report.
The cross country tour is just about drawing to a close as we make our final journey across the southwestern desert. Since the last update from Nashville, we’ve hit Asheville, NC; Atlanta, GA; New Orleans, LA; Dallas, TX; and Socorro, NM. Whew!
So far, the longest stretch has been from west Texas to New Mexico. But not to fear: we brought a ukulele, and were therefore musically productive on the road. Here’s a little diddy from the west Texas brushlands.
Back on the home front, you can get a double dose of John Rockwell tonight. He’s at Alchemy at 7pm and then he’s Fly Amero‘s guest at Rhumb Line at 9pm.
An excellent weekend of live music is shaping up. See the schedule here. But check back tomorrow because I’m sure we’ll have new stuff to post. I really thought Vickie’s post 3 weeks ago would inspire people keep their info up to date, but they don’t, so you’ll just have to wait.

It’s a beautiful day to be at Camp Spindrift for their Fall Into Winter Festival and music is still going on — if you hurry, you can catch John Jerome at 2pm (see schedule).
After that you can catch 3 more live shows today and dance into the wee hours.
Get up for brunch tomorrow at Alchemy with Flynn Cohen & Friends. Then catch the Cape Ann Big Band benefit at Gloucester House — a great way to celebrate Veterans Day — and still have time for two more shows before the night is over! WOW!
BREAKING NEWS ~ ONLY ON GMG:
Colorado Singer/songwriter Megan Burtt will be taping a show today at Cape Ann TV that will air on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes sometime this month. Megan is visiting her friend, and Berklee classmate, Chelsea Berry for a few days as part of her Northeast tour. After her excellent show on Saturday at Old Sloop, I asked Megan if she’d be in the area long enough to tape a show and she agreed! So we scrambled our crew.
If you’d like to be in the audience, come to the Cape Ann TV Studio in Blackburn Park (directions here) at 1pm. Ring the doorbell and say, I’m here for Local Music Seen. Don’t worry about what you look like, you won’t be on camera. Your presence allows the performers to connect with a live audience, which gives the show an added dimension. And your clapping, cheering, whistling, etc. will be captured on the soundtrack.
If that’s not enough, you’ll also get to hear a brand-new song from Allen Estes that I haven’t even heard yet (we missed his show at Rhumbline on Sunday because we can’t be in two places at once). Here’s a taste of what you can expect from Megan:
And don’t forget to vote (if you’re not sure why, check this out). Might as well stop by your polling place on the way to Blackburn

This concert features recent Berklee alumni from Boston and Gloucester sharing the stage to help send a Gloucester student to Berklee (more about the Scholarship Fund). When you think of Berklee College of Music, you might think Jazz only, but Berklee is all about contemporary music, which was Jazz when Berklee was founded in 1945, and now includes genres that didn’t even exist then. Check out this from Berklee’s About page:
Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music is through the study and practice of contemporary music. For more than half a century, the college has evolved to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business, leading the way with the world’s first baccalaureate studies in jazz, rock, electric guitar, film scoring, songwriting, turntables, electronic production, and more than a dozen other genres and fields of study.
Simply put, if you want to study contemporary music — from Jazz to whatever genre becomes the next big thing — and you can get in to Berklee (not so easy) that’s where you want to be. So, save the date Thursday, November 29 and come to Latitude 43 to hear some of the best Indie Rock on the planet — and, who knows, you may be helping to send the next big rock star to Berklee.
Remember, it’s an all ages show, so you can bring your kids and introduce them to the latest generation of Berklee rock stars.

Colorado native Megan Burtt returns to Cape Ann to perform with Boston-based Amy Black at the Old Sloop Coffeehouse next Saturday, November 3. I could tell you how good they are, but I’ll let the videos speak for themselves.
As you’ll see in this video I shot last year when Megan performed with Chelsea Berry, her stories are as entertaining as her songs — and this song will send chills up your spine!
Now that we’re starting the weekend on Thursdays (that’s tonight, folks) we might as well start Halloween this Friday (before the hurricane hits) and guess who stepped up to help us do just that: Gloucester’s favorite 80’s band, SAFETY. Catch them on Mile Marker One’s heated deck, Friday at 7pm, costumes, prizes, etc. http://vimeo.com/4332773
Saturday’s seARTS benefit featuring Cape Ann Big Band with the Beverly High School Jazz Sextet at Bass Rocks Golf Club is sold out, but you can still get on the waiting list if you click here.
And there’s lots more happening all weekend long, so get out before the storm hits. Check the complete live music listings here.

In case you missed this post, Next Thursday (10/25) is the 2012-13 Berklee in Gloucester season kickoff at The Gloucester House featuring the Jim Odgren Quintet, who are helping raise money to send a Gloucester student to Berklee. You may remember that this is the brainchild of Berklee’s Dean of Performance, Matt Marvuglio. Now, when you read the word Dean, what do envision? Bet it’s not the guy playing the flute solo at about 2 minutes into this video (Jim Odgren is on alto sax in this video too).
Here’s another video of Matt at The Gloucester House on March 30 with Berklee professor Ed Saindon on vibes and students Nori Shiota on bass and Jazz Robertson on drums.
Matt told me he’s planning to come to the concert on Thursday. Perhaps we can convince him to sit in.
How cool is it that you can see the top professors, students — even the dean — of the best music school in the world right here in your own backyard! Well, Aurelia Nelson, host of the show Curtain Up on North Shore 104.9 thinks it’s pretty cool, so she asked me to join her for tomorrow’s show to talk a little about it. So tune in to 104.9FM tomorrow at 9AM.
But before all that, you’ve got 13 venues with live music to choose from tonight — perfect number for a beautiful October Saturday! See the complete live music listing here.

If variety is the spice of life, then Gloucester & Cape Ann are hot and spicy this weekend with an impressive variety of live music at over 2 dozen shows. Rock, Blues, Jamband, Jazz, New Orleans, Folk, Classical, Funk, Latin, Reggae, Soul, Ska, Celtic, DJs. Whatever you want, you got it. Check out the complete live music listings for Gloucester & Cape Ann here. Often you get multiple genres on the same stage. Here’s one of our favorite local bands, The Runaround Sound, downstairs at The Middle East in Cambridge fusing Latin & Ska into a single song. You can dance to them at Minglewood tonight.

So we figured this would be the perfect week to reprise the Local Music Seen show on which Dylan appears with his father. They sing together and Dylan performs some of his own songs, which truly transcend generations.
You can see the show tomorrow (Wednesday 10/10) at 6pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 — and again on Friday at 1:30 and Sunday at 6pm. Check out this video of a song from the show:
