Lobstermen Matt and Mark Ring Prepare A Trawl For The ’11 Season

It’s That Time Of Year Again- Trap Setting Time!

Here our buddies Matt and Mark Ring aboard the Mighty Stanley Thomas prepare a lobster pot trawl by tying the groundline to each trap in a ten trap trawl.  I could tell you more but Mark Mr Secrets would not be happy.

Mark Ring’s Deviled Eggs

Tradition.

The Captain Joe and Sons Christmas Party and Mark Ring’s Deviled Eggs.

In theory deviled eggs don’t sound all that appetizing to me.  Anyone else’s deviled eggs, I’m not going to cross the street to eat and probably if they are sitting on a platter at someone’s house I’d most likely pass them by.

But not Mark Ring’s deviled eggs.  Heaven on earth.

I was going to post a video that I had taken during this time but Mark’s salty language made the video footage unusable.

Light and Demolishing

Down the dock we have a saying.  Well I should give props to mark Ring for being the first one I ever heard coin the phrase but it has been  adopted by many of our lobstermen.

The phrase is used when the weathermen really fuck up a forecast and call for light and diminishing winds but in actuality the wind is heavy throughout the fishing day making for horrible fishing conditions.

Lobstermen and fishermen depend on weathermen to know when it is safe or manageable to go fishing. The day before yesterday was one of those days when the weathermen were calling for light and diminishing winds.  The average forecast was for 5-10mph of wind.

In actuality the wind screamed out of the Northwest 20-35mph all day and it was bitterly cold.

One by one our lobstermen hit the dock and commented about the off-the-mark wind forecast.

It wasn’t light and diminishing.  More like Light and Demolishing.

Greasin The Bearing Aboard The Stanley Thomas Video

Mark Ring Climbs Down In The Bilge To Grease The Shaft Bearing

Just Like a Cat!

Greasin’ the Bearing

click the picture to view full size

see that rubber disk mat that Matt Ring is fixing back into place on the deck of The Stanley Thomas?

That rubber disk mat covers the hatch which Mark just climbed down into to grease the shaft bearing.  The shaft is what connects the transmission to the propeller.  The easier the shaft turns the smoother the boat runs.  Simple right?  The sucky part is climbing down into the bilge with only about 3 feet of clearance to get to said bearing where the grease fitting resides.  You can see Mark with the paper towel wiping off the sludge from down in the bilge- Good Times.

Video coming tomorrow.

Gloucester Exposure On CBS Around The World For Free With Jeff Schroeder

Jeff literally showed up around 7:30PM and the sheer number of Gloucester locations that we squeezed in was outstanding. Huge thank you to Mark Ring who took us out on the Stanley Thomas to the Greasy Pole and Mike Tupper who caught the Albino lobster and allowed us to release it for the show(we had been holding it in our tanks so his father in law could see it).

Jeff Schroeder Frees Rare Albino Lobster To Gloucester Harbor Video

Jeff Schroeder who just yesterday started his journey for CBS “Around The World For Free” had a choice- Eat The Lobster or Free The Lobster.  Two envelopes with two very different outcomes for the rare crustacean. If he chose to Free The Lobster he would have to walk the Greasy Pole In Gloucester Harbor.

For those of you wondering the fate of the extremely rare albino lobster that we had landed at our dock at Captain Joe and Sons in Gloucester Ma, watch to see what becomes of the rare crustacean.

Incredible

Jeff Schroeder From CBS Amazing Race and Big Brother Came To Gloucester To Film Around The World For Free

DSC08502

We hosted him at our house last night along with the crew, director and my boys The Rabbit and Benny Goodman.

But first we had a whole lot of fun in Gloucester.

When I first realized he was coming this way my first thought was to have him go lobstering on one of our boats but then midway through the afternoon the perfect idea for some good tv.

Any of our loyal readership knows about the triple pincher clawed lobster that we got at our dock last Saturday.  it was the first one I had seen like that but we sold it off at the end of the night never really knowing where it was going or if it would be eaten the next day (which I have no problem with BTW). But some of our readers, the newspaper people and television people that came down to cover the story about the triple pincher clawed lobster all asked if we would let it go because it was a “special” lobster.  We don’t take special measures to release these lobsters normally as the afternoons here are all about getting the lobsters in and out of the building as quickly as possible and of course to sell them to people that will pay the bill for said lobsters.

So when in the very same week one of lobstermen Mike Tupper aboard The Freemantle Doctor brought in an albino lobster one of only two I’ve ever seen in my entire life handling millions and millions of pounds of lobsters down here since I was a kid Mike asked if we could keep the lobster in the tank so he could show his father in law.

OK now here is where the idea came to me-  We have Jeff make the decision since the name of the show is Around The World For Free- He could eat the special albino lobster and all the lobster he could eat or he would have to walk the Greasy Pole and earn the right to release the incredibly rare albino lobster back to the sea.  I presented the two options in two envelopes One said EAT THE LOBSTER– The Other  envelope said FREE THE LOBSTER.

Mark Ring, skipper of lobster boat The Stanley Thomas took us out to the Greasy Pole and Jeff made his decision-
