Gloucester Stage Presents Live Theater Performances for Young Audiences 

Gloucester Stage Company proudly launches the 2016 season of  Playtime Stories, an engaging combination of children’s stories, live performances and interactive events for ages 3 and older, onSaturday, June 18 at 10 am at Gloucester Stage, 267, East Main Street, Gloucester. Playtime Stories offers young children the unique opportunity to experience the fun and magic of live theater as they watch their favorite books come to life onstage. Following the performance audience members will be invited to join the Playtime Stories Company in fun and interactive workshops relating to the story. Each Saturday the Playtime Stories Company, consisting of members of Gloucester Stage’s apprentice company, veteran Youth Acting Workshop students and special guest narrators. The company performs a children’s story against the backdrop of the story’s illustrations followed by a weekly series of dynamic interactive events related to the story. According Youth Acting Workshop Director and Teacher Heidi Dallin, “We had a great response to the Playtime Stories program last summer. It is a terrific way for YAW to reach out to younger audiences to spark their excitement in live performance. Many of the veteran YAW students in the Playtime Stories Company have been involved in the YAW program since they were 5 years old and now they will inspire the next generation of YAW students!” Each week Playtime Stories explores different stories ranging from classic fairy tales to new stories to works by local authors. The books for June 18 are the classic Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends: Thomas Goes Fishing, Based on The Railway Series by the Rev. W. Awdry and The Paperbag Princess by Robert Munsch. Upcoming books to be read and performed by the Playtime Stories Company include The Three Little Pigs and The Little Red Hen on June 25; Curious George and Little Bunny Foo Foo on July 9. Other Stories planned for July include Virginia Lee Burton’s Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Rumpelstiltskin, and the Dr. Seuss classics, The Lorax and What Pet Should I Get?  All Playtime Story performances are held at 10 am at Gloucester Stage, 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. Gloucester Stage kicks off new season with a party

Gloucester Stage Company held its 37th Season Spring Celebration over the weekend, launching the new season in style with a silent auction, drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and music by Boston cabaret artist Brian Patton. Attendees at the event, hosted at the home of Tom Burger and Andree Robert, included Gloucester Stage managing director Jeff Zinn, artistic director Robert Walsh, and Elizabeth Neumeier, president of the theater company’s board of directors.

Beauty and the Beast at Beeman Memorial School April 12, April 13  and April 14

The Beeman Elementary School Chorus presents Disney’s Beauty and the Beast on Tuesday, April 12, Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 7:00PM at Beeman School, 138 Cherry Street, Gloucester. All tickets for the production are $5.00 each and will be sold at the door the night of the performance.

The production features 30 fourth and fifth grade Beeman students directed by Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshop director and actress Heidi Dallin with musical direction by Beeman Music teacher Beth Goldberg. Dallin was brought into the elementary school by the Gloucester Education Foundation initiative to support and enhance elementary school theatre by partnering teachers with theatre professionals.

Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshop is accepting students 6-18 for the Winter Session of professional arts instruction beginning on Friday, January 29  for Children 6-10 years old and beginning on Saturday, January 30 for Teens 11-18 years old. The Youth Acting Workshop Winter Session features expanded instruction time of four class hours per week, lower tuition for all students and scholarship opportunities. Students will receive instruction in acting for the stage and film and television, improvisation and interview techniques, costume design and film and television production  The Children’s Class meets Fridays:4-6pmand Saturdays:1-3 pm through Saturday, March 5. The Teen Class meets Saturdays: 11-3 pm through February 27 and ends with a special Sunday class day on February 28, 12-4 pm.  Acting teacher, director and award winning actress Gloucester native Heidi Dallin will be joined by guest instructors including Holiday Delights costume designer Lara Jardullo to teach costume design and local award-winning videographer Lisa Smith to teach film and television production.  Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops are designed to provide young people an outlet to nurture their creative potential through developing self-confidence, communication and teamwork skills to use in their daily life as well as introducing them to the skills necessary for professional theatre. A Council Order was submitted by Greg Verga and Melissa Cox on November 17 to begin the DISCUSSION regarding banning ‘checkout’ bags. After a less than warm reception at the first such discussion at the December 7 meeting of the Ordinance and Administration Committee and the email sent to all City Councilors by a bag industry lobbyist this page has been created to help spread the word.

A Holiday Season Event for All Ages Featuring Students from Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops

 

The Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops proudly presents Holiday Delights on Friday, December 11 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, December 12 at 2:00 pm at Gloucester Stage Company, 267 East Main Street, Gloucester. Holiday Delights features a cast of over 40 young people ranging in age from 6 to 17, all students in Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops. This family holiday event marks the seventh time in Gloucester Stage history that a production has featured a cast of student actors from the Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshop Program. First produced in 2007, Holiday Delights has become an audience favorite and Cape Ann holiday tradition. Conceived and directed by Gloucester Stage YAW Director and teacher Heidi Dallin, Holiday Delights is a festive evening of stories, songs, and dance recounting the special traditions that other cultures and families experience as seen through one young girl’s magical journey on Christmas Eve to discover what is really important during the holiday season. The 40 young actors bring the original and classic stories to life on stage with a fresh perspective. Many actors play multiple roles in the production to bring all the stories to life. Holiday Delights features over 100 costume changes, Irish step dancing, folk dancing and a traditional Hebrew dance with the added twist of dancing dreidels; classic holiday music including Deck The Halls; Three Ships, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, and a holiday sing a long with the audience. Holiday Delights performance times are 7:30 pm on December 11, and 2 pm on December 12. Ticket prices are $15 for Adults; $12 for Senior Citizens, $8 for Students and $6 for Children under 12. Youth Acting Workshop Session Starts in September

Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshop is accepting students 6-18 for the Fall Session beginning on Friday, September 11 for Children 6-10 years old and beginning on Saturday, September 12 for Teens 11-18 years old. The six week Youth Acting Workshop Fall Session features expanded instruction time with a total of four class hours per week through Saturday, October 17. In addition to acting instruction, Fall Session students will receive instruction in scenic artistry and construction, dramaturgy, hip hop dance and stage makeup. Acting teacher and award winning actress Gloucester native Heidi Dallin will be joined by guest instructors: scenic artist Annika Rosenvinge, dramaturg and hip hop dance instructor Avery Daniels and stage makeup instructor Jenna Worden. Students will work on scene study for the 2015 YAW production of Holiday Delights directed by Ms. Dallin as well as build set pieces and learn makeup and mask techniques for the production. Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops are designed to provide young people an outlet to nurture their creative potential through developing self-confidence, communication and teamwork skills to use in their daily life as well as introducing them to the skills necessary for professional theatre. GLOUCESTER STAGE YOUTH ACTING WORKSHOP ACCEPTING STUDENTS  FOR 2015 SUMMER SESSION

Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshop exposes young people to professional theatre during a 6 week acting program for children ages 6 to 18on Fridays from July 10 through August 14. The Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshop provides young people an opportunity to develop self-confidence, communication and teamwork skills to use in their daily life as well as to introduce them to the skills necessary for professional theatre. A professional training program, the workshops include an introduction to theatre basics such as theatre games, improvisation, movement, vocal and physical expression, character preparation, scene study, storytelling, writing, public speaking and confidence building training.

Award winning actress Heidi Dallin teaches acting in collaboration with Special Guest Instructors to offer specialized training in theatre related disciplines. This summer some of the Guest Instructors will include: Evan Northrup, Magician to teach magic and  Robert Walsh, Stage Combat Instructor and Gloucester Stage Interim Artistic Director to teach stage combat. Newly added specialized training classes include Stage Makeup Techniques with Jenna Worden; Modern Playwriting techniques for Classic Stories with Avery Daniels and Lucas Baisch and  Dramatic Expression through  Hip Hop Dance with Avery Daniels.

The  2015 Summer Session  begins Friday, July 10 and meets on Fridays for two hours per week through Friday, August 14 at Gloucester Stage, 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA.The students are divided in classes according to age: Children’s Class: 9 am to 11 am-6 to 8 year olds; Pre-Teen Class: 11:30 am to 1:30 pm-9 to 11 year olds; Teen Class: 2 pm to 4 pm-12 to 18 years old.The Youth Acting Workshop Program received a grant for tuition reduction thanks to sponsorship in part from the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation and John and Mollie Byrnes. Reduced tuition is $185 and scholarships are available.  Call Heidi at 978-283-6688 to register or for more information.

Israel Horovitz’s Red Carpet Special on Cape Ann TV Tonight!

Cape Ann TV is airing  “Israel Horovitz’s ‘My Old Lady’ Red Carpet Special” tonight on Channel 12 at 9 pm. Join the talented and  glamorous Heidi Dallin as she interviews Cape Ann’s A-List who attended last weeks’s advanced screening of “My Old Lady” at the Cape Ann Community Cinema. The movie is directed by Gloucester Stage Company founder Israel Horovitz  and stars Kevin Kline and Maggie Smith. The screening was a benefit for the Gloucester Stage Company.

It is one big party on the red carpet, as Heidi talks to a sea of one name personalities from Cape Ann: Carolyn, Bruce, Ann-Margaret, and Sinikka, just to name a few. She also talks to Gail McCarthy and Desi Smith of the Gloucester Daily Times and Mark Shanahan from the Boston Globe’s ‘Names & Faces’.  The program ends with Israel’s introduction to the movie. He talks about what it is like to make a film in Paris, and working with Maggie Smith and Kevin Kline.

Youth Acting Workshops Begin September 26th!

Learn the skills necessary for professional theater!

Now accepting students age 6-19 years old.

The Fall session of YAW will place an emphasis on acting and non-verbal communication. Students will learn to communicate through yoga, movement and sign language as well as learn the basics of acting, scene study and stage technique. The workshops are designed to give the young students an outlet to nurture their creative potential through activities that will develop their self-confidence, communication and teamwork skills.

Guest instructors for the 2014 Fall Session will include:
-American Sign Language Instructor Kara Kelly Martin
-Movement Instructor Carol Burnham

Schedule:
Children’s Class (ages 6-10): Fridays, 4-6pm and Saturdays, 2-4pm.
Teen Class (ages 11-19): Saturdays, 12-4pm

Theatre Receives 15 Nominations for 2013 Season from the
 Independent Reviewers of New England

 The Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) recently announced the IRNE award nominations for the 2013 calendar year. Gloucester Stage received a total of 15 nominations for the 2013 season. The musical Spring Awakening received 9 nominations, Driving Miss Daisy received 4 nominations and Israel Horovitz’s Gloucester play, North Shore Fish received 2 nominations. According to GSC Artistic Director and Best Director nominee Eric C. Engel, “GSC is very proud of the actors, designers and directors whose work has garnered these endorsements.  And we’re very grateful to the press who find their way to so many theaters throughout the year.”

Gloucester Stage received fifteen 2014 IRNE nominations for their 2013 season. The 9 nominations for Spring Awakening include: Best Musical, Best Ensemble, Best Director of a Musical: Eric C. Engel, Best Actress in a Musical: Melody Madarasz, Best Actor in a Musical: Phil Tayler, Best Supporting Actress in a Musical: Amelia Broome, Best Supporting Actor in a Musical: Ross Mumford, Best Music Director: Catherine Stornetta and Best Choreography: Jodi Leigh Allen. North Shore Fish garnered nominations for Best Director of a Play: Robert Walsh and Best Actress in Play: Aimee Doherty. The 4 nominations for Driving Miss Daisy include Best Play, Best Director of a Play: Benny Sato Ambush, Best Actress in a Play: Lindsay Crouse and Best Actor in a Play: Johnny Lee Davenport. Mr. Ambush won the 2013 IRNE Award for Best Director of a Play for GSC’s 2012 acclaimed production of Master Harold … and the Boys.

The Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops proudly presents Holiday Delights  from December 13 through December 15 at Gloucester Stage Company, 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. Holiday Delights features a cast of 40 young people ranging in age from 6 to 17, all students in Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops. Conceived and directed by Heidi Dallin, this festive evening of stories, songs, magic and dance recounts the special traditions that other cultures and families experience as seen during one young girl’s magical journey on Christmas Eve to discover what is really important during the the holiday season.

The 2013 edition of Holiday Delights features the new journey of a young girl who discovers the spirit and the joys of the holiday season as she faces the prospect of leaving her beloved hometown of Gloucester and moving with her family to a new home in Michigan. During her Christmas Eve travels with Mrs. Claus and the elves, she joins an Egyptian Christmas celebration, celebrates Hanukkah, travels back in time to turn of the century Gloucester to see her Italian-Irish ancestors celebrate the holidays and meets famous literary characters including The Cratchit Family and the Fezziwig Family from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and the March Sisters from Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. During her Christmas Eve journey she learns about the special traditions of other families and comes to realize the importance of her own family traditions.

The 2013 edition of Holiday Delights features the new story of a contemporary family in Egypt celebrating Christmas inspired by YAW student Farah Moussa, an exchange student from Egypt studying at Gloucester High School. Cast members learned traditional Egyptian dance. The 2013 production includes elements of Sign Language learned in YAW classes this year, magic performed by cast members, new songs, new twists on classic holiday stories and the return of the original story set in turn of the century Gloucester featuring the young girl’s grandmother as a young girl herself growing up on the Fort in an Irish-Italian fishing family. According to director and writer Heidi Dallin, “I wanted to explore the main character’s background so she could see first hand her own family traditions and thus gain a new appreciation for them. I also wanted to offer the entire cast a glimpse of Gloucester’s past and enrich their experience in the production. We had an enthusiastic audience response to the 2012 premiere of the story so we brought the story back this year with some new twists and a new song.” In addition to Dallin, the artistic staff includes music direction by Gloucester Public Schools’ Helen Greene, choreography by Windhover’s Carol Burnham, set design by Gloucester Joe Mustone and property design by Danver’s Jamie Wilkinson, costume design by Lara Jardullo, and lighting design by Brendan Marr.

The 40 young actors bring the original and classic stories to life on stage with a fresh perspective. Many actors play multiple roles in the production to bring all the stories to life. The show has over 100 costume changes. Holiday Delights features classic holiday music including Deck The Halls; O, Christmas Tree, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, and Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and the show ends with a audience sing a long and a visit from Santa Claus. Gloucester High School Junior 17 year old Jaqi McCarthy returns to the role of Mrs. Claus. McCarthy has been a student of Gloucester Stage Youth Acting Workshops since age six and has appeared in Holiday Delights for 4 years. Waring School student 12 year old Sara Wheeler plays the young girl who wants to skip Christmas rather than move away from Gloucester. Wheeler first appeared in Holiday Delights in 2007 and was the youngest member of that year’s cast. She has performed in all 5 productions of Holiday Delights, originating over a dozen different roles since 2007.

Holiday Delights performances are December 13 through December 15 at Gloucester Stage, 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA.
