In Memory Of Our Dear Friend Jean Roberts- As Seen On The Counter At Last Stop Varierty

Here’s a regret-

Last summer Jean told me she was going to live in California with her children.  You have to know that as an East Gloucester kid Jean was always around and someone that everyone really loved.  I told her that I’d come back in to Last Stop Variety where she worked and do an interview with her about what it meant to be a Gloucester girl and to say good bye to the many folks that enjoyed her sense of humor and company over the years before she packed up and left for California.

I never got back to do that interview and it would have been a great treasure.

Jean you are loved and a legend around here. I hope you are at peace and happy in heaven where you surely reside.

Kristin Rotondo Heading Effort To Raise Money For Bench In Honor Of Mike and Alice Wheeler

Hi,
I loved reading "Where would you want your bench?". I often think about where my bench should be.
I am trying to raise $950 to purchase a bench from the city for Mike and Alice Wheeler to be put in at Cripple Cove park. The Wheeler’s are the unofficial caretakers of the park. They mow, plant & clean the park. They do everything from prune & plant to clean trash, graffiti and poo. If you have spent any extended time there you have met them. They do this because they love the park and the children that play there.
I thought that your readers might be interested in donating or know someone who would be.
You can donate by going here
http://wheelerbench.blogspot.com/
or there is a link on the Cripple Cove Park fan page on facebook.
Thanks so much.

Thanks For Watching

Heidi Wakeman and Frieda Grotjahn -Again and Again 2010 Design Your Own Handbag Contest

The contest which is free to enter and money raised through the auction of your cleverly designed sailbag goes directly to supporting the GHS Sailing program which gets Gloucester kids out on Gloucester harbor for no cost to them.

Frieda’s Again and Again shop makes bags from recycled sails.  Instead of these sails clogging up landfills they are put to good use as gorgeous and functional bags made from this durable and water repellant material.  You can learn more about the design your own sailbag contest in the video we made coming tomorrow

How Does This Good Egg Spend Her Birthday? Why Cleaning The Streets Of Gloucester, That’s How!

A little birdie Ed Collard told me it was a very special person’s birthday today.  Not any ordinary citizen but super dooper, over-the-top Gloucester helper and lover Donna Ardizzoni’s Birthday.

Now you may know Donna as the woman who organizes the One Hour at a Time Gang Saturday morning volunteer clean up crew or you may know her as a Board of Director on the Chamber of Commerce or you may know her from seeing pictures of her cleaning at the very end of the night after everyone enjoyed the Block Parties and she was right there with us making sure the streets were completely clean so that permitting for subsequent Block Parties would go smoothly.

But today was her birthday.  A day that is for one’s self.  And Donna one who is the ultimate doer as opposed to many out there that like to talk but never take action was out cleaning the streets of Gloucester with her group of One Hour At a Time Gangers- On Her Birthday.

So next time you see Donna- Give her a pat on the back and an atta girl.  She’s one hell of a good egg!

Happy Birthday Donna From Your Buddy Joey! First Drink Is On Me At Next Week’s Block Party!   Woot!

I4C2 Beautification Review Video At The Site

Ed Collard walks us around the site and details the work that took place at the I4C2 beautification project May 22, 2010

About a third of the way into the video there is a very useful tip that could save you money!

Kudos to all that were involved

Bring Your Thinnings I4C2 Planting Day Sat May 22

Saturday is bring your thinnings To I4C2 and have them planted and help clean the joint up day.

Anyone that bitched about the way it looked at that site for years, now is your chance to do something about it.

Congratulations Scott Pytlik

Scott Pytlik who has been the web editor for the Gloucester Daily Times and was responsible for the roll out of the newly revamped GDT website is moving on to a video game PR with a company called Access Communications PR.  On Scott’s website- http://scottpytlik.com/ he writes-

What’s even more impressive is that gloucestertimes.com has once again won CNHI’s Web site of the Year award for newspapers under 12,000 circulation. The paper also took this honor last year, which was the first year the award was offered. Between our spot news coverage of the Eastern Ave. House Explosion in January of 2009 and the addition of our new Taste of the Times food videos, I guess we had more to offer year-over-year then any of the other 100 newspapers in our company that entered the contest. Because one of the many hats I wear is titled web editor, some people have been quick to congratulate me directly as if it’s solely my award. But really, winning Web site of the Year was only possible because we have one of the most dedicated and hardworking newsroom teams in all of CNHI.

Congrats Scott On Your New Job and thanks for all the help in implementing the blog section into the GDT Website!

From Scott’s website he also writes- In this May 2009 photo, Gloucester Daily Times editor Ray Lamont, right, kisses the 2008 Newspaper of the Year award while I kiss the Web site of the Year award. I’ll be kissing another silver cup soon when this year’s award comes.

One Hour At A Time Gang Clean Up This Saturday

A bunch of folks met each Saturday morning last year to spend a little time outdoors and clean up City Streets that could use a little trash pick up.  Our very own very good buddy Donna Ardizzoni fills folks in on where to meet and everyone sets off to clean up a certain section of the City each Saturday morning.  It only takes an hour or two of time but you get out in the fresh air, meet like minded folks that love our city and feel great about what you’ve done afterward.

From Donna Ardizzoni-

Hi All:

Hope all had a great weekend and are dry….

When:                                  Saturday:             April 3, 2010 8:00AM

Where:                                 Meet at St. Peter’s Square

What to do:                        I think we should go down Main and Rogers and also some of the Boulevard..  especially if we have some brooms, shovels, etc.                                                        Due to the weather coming in, we need to clean as much as we can especially on the streets and near the Tavern.

Thanks to all and please pass the word..  we will make this city shine…  and show how beautiful it is

I will bring the bags from the DPW…

Stay dry…..

Donna
