Impressions of Ravenswood Park

The other day, a friend took me to Ravenswood Park for the first time.  Good thing I wasn’t alone, or I would probably have either gotten lost or missed out on some of the beautiful spots in the park! This is a great place to go for a walk. Just bring lots of bug repellant…

3-year-old Surf Music Dancer

Here’s some (almost) live blogging: 3-year-old Drew Rodolosi (of Gloucester) dances to the music of Johnny Carwash in the Minglewood Tavern parking lot among some classic cars and bikes this afternoon.  Wish I could do that!

Zip Line Kid shows you how to chop wood and use a socket set to fix a wagon

When we built the zip line (See those videos here), we had to chop down some trees and since yesterday wasn’t much of a beach day, John decided to chop them up and fix his wagon so he could haul the wood into the garage to store until it gets really cold.  In this video he shows you how to chop wood with an ax and use a socket wrench to repair a wagon (red wagon, of course).

Lots of great live music going on RIGHT NOW on this beautiful Father’s Day (click here for some ideas we gave you yesterday).  If you play your cards right, you could take Dad to see 8 shows between now and 9 tonight!  See full live music lineup here.

Another origami sighting in Gloucester!

The other day I stopped in to the Lone Gull Coffeehouse for the first time, and to my surprise and delight, saw origami!  Not stand-alone origami, but origami cranes used very creatively as part of a type of collage, by artist Kate Dagle.  Here is a sampling:

She has a a variety of different works on display – beautifully combining the cranes in different colors, patterns, and compositions.

While you admire the artwork, I highly recommend trying out one of the Lone Gull’s incredible variety of soda or lemonade. They have quite a list of different flavors they can mix into your beverage.  I had a “white peach lemonade”, which was delicious.

Brendan Pike’s art is on the wall in the background. It looks very nice, but I must admit, all my attention was focused on the origami…

The Lone Gull Coffee House is located at 146 Main Street.

Zip Line Kid Saves Bird Nest & Eggs

Well, our son John has a new project this week.  While repairing our roof, we displaced a bird nest with eggs in it and John moved the nest with some help from Vickie, who’s been talking to the bird for some time now suggesting that she really didn’t want to be in our roof anyhow.  Watch this video and see how mother and son help out another mother and her (hopeful) offspring.

13 venues with music spread throughout the day, all day and night — it’s going on right now!  No reason to stay home.  Check out the full music lineup here.

McDonald’s in Gloucester being reborn!

Back at the end of April, I posted about the demolition of the McDonald’s on Maplewood Ave., in preparation for a complete rebuilding. This is the photo I posted at the time.

I took another photo at the end of May. The old building is completely gone, and the new one is coming up:

That was quick! I hope they are back up and in business soon.

Phyllis A Restoration Photos From Len Burgess

The 1925 ‘Phyllis A.’ is now high and dry at the start of it’s restoration process at the Gloucester Marine Railways.

–Len Burgess

The Phyllis A. Marine Association is in the process of the restoration of this gill-netting fishing ship and has received some funding from the citizens of Gloucester through the Community Preservation Act.

A brief history of the Phyllis A. from "The Wheel House", How it all started!

Albert Arnold, the man who had the vessel built, owned a boat before the Phyllis A. called the Anna T. Captains Albert, Cy Tysver, and Mike Shoares, all “Michigan Bears”, had her built in Essex in 1913. She was about the same size as the future Phyllis A. and also a gill-netter. In 1923, Albert loaned the Anna T. to a family friend. Unfortunately, she was lost on the bar off Wingersheek Beach in the Annisquam River. The pilot house of the Anna T. floated to shore and was dragged up next to “the frog rock” (rocks painted to look like frogs) and made a shed out of it. The Anna T.’s pilot house/shed is there still today, sitting just south of frog rocks.

The insurance company paid Albert $4500 for the wreck, which he used to commission the building of the Phyllis A. at the Warner Shipyard, in Kennebunkport, Maine. Phil Boudain joined the venture with his nets, and when the Phyllis A. came down the ways in 1925, they set off gillnetting together.

Fishing the Phyllis A. has always been a family affair. Son Alvin Arnold took over from Captain Albert and sons Kenneth and Robert crewed. Later on, the youngest son, Richard, took on the captain’s position. From the beginning, Mrs. Arnold kept the books and kept everyone moving. Young Phyllis Arnold, though not a crew member, was present with the family when the vessel was christened and named for her. Then 3, she cried when she broke the bottle of champagne on the bow and splashed on the beautiful new deck!

Phyllis A. Marine Association

Our mission is not only the promotion of the industry and preservation of the vessel, but to provide the historical education of the fishing industry for our children.

Last Spring, the Phyllis A. Marine Association offered an educational program to East Gloucester Elementary School. Capt. Richard Arnold has done programs for the students of Veteran’s Memorial School and was interested in offering that program to the students of East Gloucester School. The program consists of a short movie about the Phyllis A., a short lecture, Q&A, and display of artifacts. The program lasts about one hour and can be designed to fit the needs of the students and teachers. This pilot program is offered free of charge. We hope to expand to more schools this Spring.

Mosaic fragment in Gloucester – do you know where it is?

The other day I (almost literally) stumbled across this bit of mosaic  half-hidden under the asphalt on a road in Gloucester.  It is the last thing I expected – it looks like a little piece of Pompeii or some other ancient Italian city came over with the immigrants and decided to take up residence. Not many American cities have mosaic on (or under) the streets.  I wonder if there is more mosaic hiding under the asphalt?   And I wonder if this is common knowledge, or if it is something that most Gloucester residents never noticed?

Do you know where it is?

Kathleen Millers Paint Box

Cape Ann artist Kathleen Miller brings along her paint box for outdoor painting. The box sits either on the ground or on her lap, with her palette board attached to an easel setup as she paints. The paint box is an essential piece of equipment, containing everything she needs, except the canvas. In it, Kathleen packs her vibrant Gamblin oil paints, flat and filbert (rounded) brushes, and two pallete knives. “Almost all of the paintings I do in the summer are plein air (done outside),” Kathleen says. “I love painting all types of subject matter, although I’m especially drawn to the water.  Typically, I paint in the late afternoon, which has really nice lighting effects.” When asked to share a funny experience that happened to her while painting on location, she told about a time that she was set up at Stage Fort Park and a rat ran over her foot.  In spite of that, she made a beautiful painting of Half Moon Beach. “You never know what will happen when you paint outside!” she laughed. “You might end up with a beautiful painting with bugs stuck in it…  That’s just part of the experience!”  Her style, in her own words: “My feelings, expressed in color and design, are more important in my paintings than subject matter.” She likes to make small paintings, although she does larger works as well. Kathleen Miller currently has 57 original oil paintings displayed at Bodin Historic Photo & Fine Art in downtown Gloucester. You can look at Kathleen’s work on:

City Hall scaffolding progression photos

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: the people putting up this scaffolding have to be of a special breed to be able to work at those heights. Like in the photo in the slideshow where there’s a guy holding a wooden beam, laying his own floor to walk on, with no netting around him yet… My respects!  Be careful, be safe, and may God watch over you!

Gloucester Game Changer- Shit Just Got Real In The Asian Fusion Dining Scene In Our Beloved Gloucester Massachusetts.

I could go on and on but let me just shut my yap and post some pictures and let them do the talking  (video at 8PM)

Chef Enx studied under Roy Yamaguchi and if any of you know a little something about Roy Yamaguchi you know the guy basically brought Asian fusion to where it is today.  Based on what I ate and saw last night it looks like Chef Enx took what he learned at Roy’s and brought it to a whole ‘nother level.

Eric Smith of the Westland, Michigan Fire Dept. Selected as Chief

image

Mayor Carolyn Kirk today announced the selection of Eric Smith, currently a Deputy Chief with the Westland, Michigan Fire Department, as Chief of the Gloucester Fire Department.  The announcement comes following a comprehensive search for new fire chief to lead the department.

“First and foremost I want to thank the Search Committee for their diligence in staying focused on the search and bringing the best candidates forward. Each finalist brought different strengths, and Eric Smith’s continual professional development and experience in Westland were the determining factors in the final selection decision.  He is a leader in a department that covers just over 20 square miles, has triple the population, double the emergency calls, fewer employees and a similar overtime budget to the Gloucester Fire Dept while ensuring that the community’s four fire stations are open at all times.

We will learn from Deputy Chief Smith’s professionalism and distinguished record of service in the fire/EMS service, and I look forward to the city and the Fire Department warmly welcoming him and his family to Gloucester” said Mayor Kirk.

Deputy Chief Eric Smith is currently second in command of the Westland, MI Fire Department where he is responsible for comprehensive management of 70 employees, four fire stations, the department’s administrative office, training facility, and a fleet of 30 vehicles.  The department is the third busiest in Wayne County Michigan with over 9700 calls for emergencies in 2011.  The population of Westland is over 80,000 residents and covers 20.5 square miles.

With the department since 1991, Deputy Chief Smith has continuously risen through the ranks having held the positions of Firefighter, Sergeant, Hazmat Team Leader, Captain, Battalion Chief, and Deputy Chief.  He is a licensed paramedic, served in the United States Air Force from May 1986 to January 1990 with a rank of Sergeant upon his discharge.

He also holds a Bachelors degree in Public Safety from Concordia University in Ann Arbor Michigan along with Masters of Science coursework in Technology Studies and Emergency Management from Eastern Michigan University and an Associates of Science degree in Fire Technology from Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan.

Deputy Chief Smith also holds many professional certifications and was a part time Paramedic Instructor for a number of years teaching all levels of EMS education at Baker College in Westland, MI.

Deputy Chief Smith’s permanent appointment is contingent upon successful employment contract negotiations as well as confirmation by the Gloucester City Council.

Field Of Dreams?

This can’t be the same Swinson Field I grew up being a terrible little league baseball player on could it?

Melissa Pierce Forwards-

Hi Joey!
Attached are a couple of pics from my sons t-ball game this morning at Swinson’s field. The grass was so high the kids could hardly play ball.
Many other fields were like this as well. Including where the Y kids play t-ball at O’maley. Although not quite as bad. We were all hoping by sending this to you that something might get done about it. Perhaps the grass can be mowed? Thanks!
