Come Down To The Dock Today! Saturday May 21st For Abby Ytzen’s seARTS Partner With and Artist Gloucester Fishing 101 Event

This is Your Boy Joey asking you to come on down and say hi and take it all in (and there will be some fantastic refreshments)

we will be live blogging the event as well so come on down and get your mug on GMG!

One Page From Abby Ytzen’s Gloucester Fishing 101 Handbook

Click the picture for just one page from Abby’s Gloucester Fishing 101 book which she produced for seARTS Partner With an Artist Program.  there will be many panels on eth walls here at our Dock- Captain Joe and Sons 95 East Main St Saturday from 10-2PM

Click on the picture below to see it full sized and learn some interesting facts for yourself.  I for one was astounded at the breakdown of how many of each different type of commercial fishing boats there were.  42% of the fleet are lobster boats, I had no idea, but this is just one of the factoids that Abby has broken down.  I think if you click on the picture you will get a sense of how easy she made it all to understand even though there is a ton of data in her book and in her exhibit, ANYONE could easily understand it.

-and this is all stuff that anyone that really takes pride in living in Gloucester or loves the fishing industry should know about.

So be sure to stop on by the dock Saturday 10-2PM

Abby Ytzen/Captain Joe and Sons seARTS Partner With An Artist Exhibit May 21st

Blown away!  When you can get Pete Mondello, a fisherman for over 50 years excited about a Gloucester fishing industry exhibit you know you’ve done something special.

The way Abby has broken down such an incredible amount of fisheries statistics into an easily digestible visual/artistic/educational/fun presentation with everything you need to know about where Gloucester’s fishing industry has been with data and visuals bringing you right up to the present is nothing short of astounding.

This is an uncomplicated 101 guidebook to Gloucester’s fishing industry which has distilled all the data and will give any person a good basic understanding of what is going on around the Gloucester waterfront.  The way it is broken down there is info for people 7 years old to 70 and it is all incredibly interesting.  Every person who considers themselves a real “Gloucesterite” NEEDS to come see this exhibit.

Chickity Check It! Fellow North Shore Blogger Consortium Member Jane Ward Publishes “The Mosaic Artist”

Jane writes-

Food and Fiction blog followers already know that my latest novel, THE MOSAIC ARTIST, is published and ready to be read.
For other friends, this may be news.  Here is a link to the blog post that describes the journey from idea to manuscript to novel:
http://wp.me/ppXh4-Nv
I’d love for you to pick up a copy, read it, and let me and other readers know what you think.  One advance critical review is in and it is positive: http://wp.me/PpXh4-MP
I’d also be eternally grateful for the faith you have in me and my work if you would pass along the word about THE MOSAIC ARTIST.  Your word-of-mouth recommendation to networks of family, friends and coworkers is powerful.  If you know or belong to a book group, the group might consider reading TMA.  I have spoken to book groups in the past, and would love to do so in the future.
The book is available on line through Amazon (print and Kindle formats): http://www.amazon.com/Mosaic-Artist-Jane-Ward/dp/1453860045/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1303222902&sr=1-1
and through Create Space: https://www.createspace.com/3488870
and, for local folks, through Jabberwocky Bookshop (Newburyport) and Bertram and Oliver Books (Amesbury).  If you live outside the Merrimack Valley area but still prefer to shop in indie book stores, feel free to ask your favorite shop to stock the book.  Ask for it by name, author, and ISBN (9-781453-860045).
I have asked a lot of you, my friends.  In return I offer you my sincerest thanks for your friendship and support.

Angela Cook To Open Oasis Rockport Gallery On Bearskin Neck

A big celebration is planned for Mother’s Day weekend. Oasis Rockport, the newest Bearskin Neck art gallery, is holding their Grand Opening. The gallery features fine art scenic photography from Angela Cook. Angela’s focus is on dramatic seascapes and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets as well as many beautiful floral, wildlife and wilderness images. When asked about her photography, Angela is quoted as saying “I enjoy sharing the beauty, emotion and simplicity of life with my images.” Angela is a local photographer who loves Cape Ann and wants to share the beauty of that with her customers. Oasis Rockport will not just offer photos. There will be regularly scheduled walking photo tours as well as outdoor portrait shoots. Angela also plans on including some beautiful semi-precious stone jewelry crafted by Sharon Lane in her gallery as well as select hand-made keepsakes designed by Suzanne Ouellette. The Grand Opening of Oasis Rockport will be held May 7th from 9am to 6pm and May 8th from 10am to 5pm. There will be giveaways, refreshments and a good time to be had by all. This new gallery is located at 65 Bearskin Neck, right next to Helmut’s Strudel and is well worth a visit. If you would like a sneak preview, feel free to check out the Oasis Rockport website at www.oasisrockport.com and be sure to Like their Facebook page, where Angela posts her most recent work.

Bill Hubbard Painting of the Alice S. Wentworth

Joe,
Attachment is my painting of the Alice S. Wentworth for posting on GMG.  This is an Acrylic, Pen & Ink on 16X20 stretched canvas.  It is one of a series of paintings I am doing on historical coasting schooners.  She was built in Norwalk, CT. in 1863.  Bought by Capt. Arthur A. Stevens in early 1900s.  Completely rebuilt by Stevens and re-documented in 1905 as the A.S.Wentworth.
Regarded as one of the fastest coasting schooners on the coast, she hauled general cargos including lumber, coal, gypsom, salt and merchandise to ports from New York to the canadian maritimes. She often loaded salt directly from the big salt steamers that called atGloucester to fish processors along the coast of Maine.
My painting depicts the Wentworth passing Thatchers I. and setting a course into the Gulf of Maine.  Loaded with salt in Gloucester and bound for Boothbay and other down east ports she has just come about and sprung her main and foresail wing-and-wing with the a dry sou’easter pushing her along.
I like to paint historic sailing ships doing what they were built to do.  I’ve just started a painting of the just re-built 130’  Sch Western Union of Key West, Florida.  She was built as a coaster in 1936 for and sailed as a Marine cable repair ship for Western Union Telegraph Company for 35 years.  She has just undergone a $1.24 million restoration and will operate out of Key West as a tour ship.
I’m currently looking for old photos of the Lanesvill and Rockport granite sloops and schooners as subject for another painting.  There are plenty of photos of Maine coasters and granits ships, but scant few of the Cape Ann boats.
Thanks for posting this picture, Joe, and a big thanks for Good Morning Cloucester .com – a great way for me to keep in touch with the Cape Ann scene.
Bill Hubbard
