If you are anything like me, its difficult to enjoy swimming when the water is icy cold. For the past three days, its been delightfully warm, even late in the afternoon, which is the time of day when I usually take a break from work to go for a walk (or swim). I’m heading over to the beach again this afternoon and hoping for four swimming days in a row!

I’ve been touch with Victor Mastone of the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaelogical Resources and he has provided this further update:
“Right now, nothing conclusive from background research or initial fieldwork except the wreck remains extend much deeper into the beach than we anticipated from our visit in July. We initially thought perhaps 2 feet of sand over the keel. However, we found waterline markings on the stem (“VI” and “V” meaning 6 feet and 5 feet respectively). So, we anticipate more ship structure buried in the sand. We could not definitively find the stern despite probing and digging. Further, no metal fittings were observed.”
Vic also told me that he expects to be back at the site in September. Stay tuned as this mystery continues.

A neat way to track some of the schooners coming to participate in the Schooner Festival this weekend. Go to MARINE TRAFFIC.COM and create a free account. Now you can make “My Fleet” and find some of the schooners. You can then see realtime where the schooner is. This only works for boats out there with AIS transponders so some have them, some don’t. If anyone comes up with a more inclusive way to follow the whole fleet before the Mayor’s Cup race post in the comments.

Gloucester, 23 Harbor Loop in downtown Gloucester.
Free to the public. Over 25 arsan vendors and
community organizations with demonstrations and
family activities. The traditional Celtic band, Meridian,
will play on the Boat House stage at 11:30 am and 1:00
pm. Schooners will be at the dock for visitors. Food will
be available onsite. Maritime Gloucester’s exhibits and
aquarium will be open throughout the day for half-price
admission.

at Americold, 1 Rowe Square on Gloucester’s harborfront.

Guard and its important role in Gloucester.

Effie, the pup at the helm of Ernestina, (ex Effie M Morrissey) will be greeting visitors at the SEMA table from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM Saturday at Maritime Gloucester. This Effie is a Newfoundland, no longer a pup, and there’s no missing her. The Schooner Ernestina Morrissey Association (SEMA) has important news to share on a restoration schedule and subsequent plans to put her back to work. Now owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and operated by the Schooner Ernestina Commission, she was launched as Effie M Morrissey in Essex 120 years ago to fish out of Smith Cove for the J F Wonson Fish Company. We are very interested in talking to anyone with information on her early years working out of Gloucester.
We hope to see you at MG on Saturday!

Sister Mary Corita (1918-1986)
Born Frances Elizabeth Kent, the Iowa native joined the Roman Catholic Sisters of the Immaculate Heart in 1936. She studied art at Otis College of Art and Design and the Chouinard Institute and received her BA from Immaculate Heart College where she laterbecame the Chair of the Art Department. She said her work was influenced by Buckminster Fuller and Charles and Ray Eames, with whom she enjoyed close relationships as she developed her signature style of painting and serigraphy, said by many to have changed the course of modern art. Corita Kent left the sisterhood in 1968, moved to Boston, and devoted herself to a highly successful life as a studio artist. Among her best known works are the “Love” postage stamp from 1985 and the controversial gas storage tanks on the Southeast Expressway in Dorchester which are said to contain the profile of Ho Chi Minh.

Public art: Justin Desilva bookmark and seagull question
Hi Joey,
Artist Justin Desilva has completed several more crosswalks: Our Lady of Good Voyage, Lobsters, Howard Blackburn, and St. Peter’s Square. He’s had several requests for a postcard or some take away about his temporary project. If you see him, ask for a bookmark. Some of the murals are at different stages in their installation process; you will see him going back and forth to different sites. As this project is temporary, Justin will remove his work at the conclusion of his exhibit.

Gloucester Counts Down to Kindergarten streamed across the Sawyer crosswalk. Congratulations GPS, Sawyer Free, CAM, Art Haven and YMCA in partnership with the Boston Children’s Museum for planning what looked like a stellar, joyous event.
Question: Does anyone know how to persuade the seagulls to forego their perch atop the light above the crosswalk by City Hall and Sawyer?!
