The MIGRATING ROBINS HAVE RETURNED!

American Robin winter crabapple turdus migratorius, americanus ©kim Smith 2015American Robin and Crabapples

Right on schedule, the robins have returned to ourĀ East Gloucester neighborhood! They were seen flocking to the holly berries, crabapples and sumac. This morning it was bleak and drizzly;Ā I hope to see themĀ back in our neighborhood on a sunnier day!

Dear Readers, If you spotĀ robins in your garden or neighborhood, please comment in the comment section and let us know when and where. If you get a good capture of a robin, or any songbird for that matter, please send to kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com and I will be happy to shareĀ theĀ photosĀ here on GMG. Thank you so much!

Coconuts First Meal Post Surgery

Coconut rested peacefully after we finally decided to remove the hard plastic cone from her neck last nightĀ after several hours of whimpering caused by her frustration of being unable to get in a comfy position with it on. A friend hand delivered a soft inflatable cone after hearing about her discomfort, but that too was no go for Coconut.Ā  As long as I amĀ within reach and orĀ in her sight she continues to rest comfortable by the fireplaceĀ and remains uninterested in the stiches in her right lower eyelid.Ā Coconut seems more bothered byĀ the hair shaved on her leg during surgery then her swollen eye. Dr. RayĀ Cahill continues to check in and warns to keep a close eye on her if she is without the protective cone. This afternoon I fixed herĀ favorite lunchĀ “Grilled Basil Chicken” with the hope that the smell of it cookingĀ on the grill,Ā would motivate her to leaveĀ her cozy spot by the fire andĀ draw her over to my feet in the kitchen, where she usually sitsĀ when I’mĀ cooking. My plan worked like a charm. Coconut perked right up and enjoyed every last piece.

Thank you for the kind messages wishing Coconut a speedy recovery!

Worth getting up for — even if you stayed up late with John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band at the Larcom tomorrow night. Ā Don’t forget our local favorites, TheĀ Gary Backstrom Band is opening. Don’t be a fool…drop everything…Run and get yours before they are sold out!!!

Worth every penny! Let the cooking begin!

I Love when I learn something new from viewers of GMG Sista’s Dish…

Today I received this message from friend and GMG viewer Joanne Frontiero Joanne Frontiero Writes ~ My Mother and I worked for your father many years ago pulling the heads of the shrimp. Then they went into the secret room to the machine that could remove the eggs. I was in high school at the time and worked during a school vacation with Mom and my friend Jacquie!

Sista Felicia~ Thanks Joanne for sharing that. I remember the shrimp on the conveyer belt and remember all the women removing the heads, but I never knew there was a special machine to remove the eggs!

Might Have to Try This…

I, for one, had never heard of this before.

Has anyone tried it? They are currently selling it at Seabreeze Liquors….right near my grapefruit beer.

Manchester Historical Museum February Lecture

Ā One of Manchester’s most fascinating and important figures, Captain Richard Trask, will be the subject of an upcoming program presented by the Manchester Historical Museum on February 10th. Richard Trask, abandoned by his mother at childbirth, raised by foster parents, taught the fundamentals of seamanship as a teen, captain of a series of successful merchant ships, personal friend of the czars of Russia, skipper and part-owner of the St. Petersburg – the largest ship ever built in Massachusetts at the time – was a massive figure – both physically and by reputation.

Ā On Tuesday, February 10th, you are invited to the Sacred Heart Parish Hall for a 7pm program to learn more about this important local sea captain and his strong-willed wife Abigail, when John Huss, Curator of the Manchester Historical Museum presents “The Saga of the St. Petersburg” at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Manchester. The program will also include the story of the museum-quality half-model of the St. Petersburg which was built and presented to the museum last year by Steve Parson of Hamilton.Ā  Steve will be joined at the podium by his mentor Matt Sutherland of Concord, one the nation’s most highly regarded model boat builders.

Ā Because of the importance of Captain Trask to local history, the Manchester Historical Museum is reaching beyond its membership to invite the public to attend for a nominal fee of $10. If guests decide to join the Museum, this fee will be deducted from their membership. To RSVP, please contact the Manchester Historical Museum at 978-526-7230 or email: info@manchesterhistoricalmuseum.org. Refreshments served at 6:30, program starts at 7pm.
