Fried Smelt

The above photo was included in a Sista Dish post yesterday. Shortly after it posted, I received a message from Facebook friend, Mary Ann Albert Boucher,  that touched my heart and made my day!

Mary Ann Writes~ “OMG…never thought a photo of fried smelt would bring a tear to my eye, but smelt ice fishing was one of my father’s favorite hobbies and would go several times during the winter to Brunswick, ME with the guys and bring home hundreds and hundreds of them… he’d bag them up by the dozen or two or three and deliver them all over the city to friends……………as kids we would often go to the Cape Ann Marina or to a small bridge off of Essex Avenue and fish with him…Memories”

Mary Ann, Thank you so much for sharing your memory triggered by the Fried Smelt photo posted yesterday. Your comment not only touched my heart and made my day, it once again reinforced why I’m so passionate about connecting younger generations to our past through celebrations of food, family and friendship. Each time I receive a comment like yours, it fuels my determination to find a way to share the remainder of my cookbook series with the world, and expand the ability to share step-by-step recipes, and childhood memories involving food on a larger scale.

Mary Ann Comments posted on FB regarding today’s Post~AWWWWW…thank you for the kind words Felicia…..isn’t it funny how a simple photo CAN bring the most awesome memories rushing back. You are a blessing to not only your family, but the entire community…God Bless! 🙂

Len Burgess Submits Edward B. Snow Hull Life Saving Museum Rowing Race

Hi Kim,

I thought you might like to see this and pass it on for the Cape Ann rowers. I don’t know if any entries came from here.
It’s a slideshow of the Edward B. Snow, Hull Lifesaving Museum rowing race that was held this past weekend in Hull. It sure doesn’t look like spring, does it.

Should Boston Voters Should Decide Whether or Not The City Of Boston Host The Olympic Games?

From WGBH Greater Boston Report

Support for Boston’s Olympic bid has tripped out of the starter’s gate. Now, Boston 2024 says it won’t go forward without public support. Boston City Councilor Josh Zakim and United Independent Party chairman Evan Falchuk have proposed ballot questions to gauge just that, hoping to provide a place for voters to weigh in, maybe even have the final say.

Should people get a say, maybe the final say, on whether the Olympics come to Boston? And if so, should it just be Bostonians? Or the whole state? Let us know.

One if by Land, Two if by Sea

Just a few of the things that caught my eye while out walking Marlin last night. Including “our beach” and bits and pieces of Bearskin Neck….such as one of the most photographed lanterns on Cape Ann. It was nice to be able to hit the streets again without having to battle colossal snow banks.  Bring on Spring!

Live Spring Training!! Bon Voyage!! #gloucesterma

And I’m off to FENWAY South to report on the RedSox! JetBlue would like to remind everyone leaving Boston that your leaving Title Town. BOOOOM #

Order Your Beautiful Caffe Sicilia Cassata Siciliana for Easter Today!

During this year’s round of filming for Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph Community Film Project, I had the wonderful good fortune to stop at Caffe Sicilia just as Maria Cracchiolo was about to decorate her signature Cassata Siciliana.

It was the morning of Saint Joseph Day and as you can imagine, Caffe Sicilia was bustling to fill the day’s special orders of delicious Sicilian pastries and altar breads. Nevertheless, I asked Maria if she would mind if I filmed her while she decorated the cake. No, not all, she graciously allowed. Maria is so deft at cake making that it took her only minutes to create this masterpiece. It’s all been captured for our film project! The Vine below gives a tiny glimpse of Maria’s artistry.

Cassata Siciliana is also traditionally served at Easter time. What a gorgeous gift Caffe Sicilia’s cassata would make to share at your family’s Easter celebration, which as you may know is coming up very soon, in less than two weeks, on Sunday, April 5th. Believe me when I write, Maria’s Cassata Siciliaina tastes as good as it looks–divine, actually! A partial list of the ingredients includes sponge cake, ricotta, liquor, marzipan, royal icing, and candied fruit.

Special orders may be placed by calling Caffe Sicilia at 978-283-7345.

Driving report cards for teenagers

I’m not that parent that wants to buy my teenager a “new car” but after looking at this article it sure is tempting!

Toby Pett sent in this link in relation to the post about teen driving last week. The new 2016 Chevy Malibu is coming out with a system that will give you a report of how your child was driving among other wicked cool features! SAY WHAT! HOW AWESOME IS THAT?

RNAC MEMBERS SHOW FEATURES PAINTINGS AND DRAWING

Gloucester MA, Mar 23, 2015— On April 2, 2015, the Cultural Center Gallery on Wonson Street in Gloucester opens the second of two RNAC member shows—a juried Spring exhibition of paintings and drawings by Rocky Neck Art Colony members. Provocatively titled “It’s Not Furniture,” the exhibition features 35 works by 23 member artists exhibiting 2D works in oil, acrylic, watercolor mixed media, encaustic, collage and color pencil. Juror Carol Pelletier, Chair of Fine Arts and Professor of Art at Endicott College, selected the work.

“It’s Not Furniture” is on view April 2-26, 2015 during gallery hours Thursday-Sunday from 12-4 PM. The public is invited to a reception for artists and friends on Sunday, April 12, 2-4 PM at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester.

According to the exhibition organizer Martha Swanson, the slightly odd title for this painting show is meant to provoke a discussion about the function of art from both artist’s point of view and intention, to the non-utilitarian function of wall art. To express one of the myriad of reasons for collecting art, a member of the Cultural Center’s exhibition committee succinctly stated, “a painting need not match the décor.”

“It’s Not Furniture” looks at the landscape, seascape, cityscape, still-life study and more in styles ranging from realistic to abstract through the diverse styles of artists Kathleen Gerdon Archer, Kristie Bernard, Katherine Coakley, Mary D. Cole, Robin Colodzin, Maura Cronin, Terry DelPercio-Piemonte, Loren Doucette, Gail Gang, Leslie Heffron, Michele Kenna, Kat Masella, Mary Rhinelander McCarl, Sinikka Nogelo, Gerry O’Leary, Sue Ann Pearson, Regina Piantedosi, Ronald Pruett, Deb Schradieck, Lully Schwartz, Kate Somers, Anna Vojtech, and  Rokhaya Waring.
