Is it or is it not the whole thing straight through?  Behind the scenes doc on PBS GREAT PERFORMANCES. “Follows the creation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s pop culture Broadway phenomenon, Hamilton, and the history behind it. Interviews with Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, Nas, Questlove, Stephen Sondheim and more. Friday, October 21 at 9PM  WGBH 2.”  Anyone else annoyed by the buzz phrases “thought leader” and “notable thinkers”?

I loved the Hamilton live performance, riveting Grammys opener.

The GCC Application deadline is October 17, 2016. No paper copies are required this year!

The GCC grants have primed countless programs that would not have been possible without that support. The unheralded community volunteers that put in the time and effort to administer the process are fantastic. I look forward to seeing the annual choices. Good luck everyone!

The Gloucester Cultural Council is currently accepting applications for grant funding for community-based projects in the arts, humanities and sciences for the FY 2017 round of funding. Each year, organizations, schools and individuals are invited to apply to the Local Cultural Council for funding to support projects that promote rich cultural experiences in the Gloucester community. This year, all applicants must submit their proposals via the new online system and no hard copy applications will be accepted. 

The Gloucester Cultural Council is part of a network of 329 Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in the Commonwealth. The LCC Program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, sciences and humanities every year. The state legislature provides an annual appropriation to the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, which then allocates funds to each community. The Gloucester Cultural Council guidelines, project priorities and online applications are available at http://www.mass-culture.org/Gloucester.

What at first appears to be a mobile drug lab hidden in the woods turns out to be a home grown terrorist cell with roots that run deep into state and federal government.

John received an MFA in creative writing from Pine Manor College, in Chestnut Hill MA. He has a long publishing history in non-fiction. White Mountains’ False Flag is his fourth fiction novel. John lives in Massachusetts with his family and teaches screenwriting at Endicott College in Beverly Massachusetts.

GMG FRIENDS REPORT THEIR MONARCH BUTTERFLY SIGHTINGS!!

Cheryl Allen writes: I am not sure you want this information because I live in Northern Virginia, but I am seeing at least a dozen if not more on my tropical milkweed plants this week – this is after the Monarch’s laying eggs back in July and those developed Monarch’s flying off. They are coming from the North I expect, but am gratified by seeing so many this year – more than I have ever seen in my garden over the last thirty years.

I want to thank you for alerting me to the Monarch crisis three years ago, I started planting Milkweed and spread the word to all my gardener friends, until I read your post regarding this crisis, I had no idea! I always enjoy your posts so much, I just missed seeing the baby Plovers by one week and was pretty crestfallen when I arrived a week after they were born, and no baby Plovers – Thanks for being such a friend to our wildlife and letting us know how we can help, it is much appreciated!

Shaina writes: So far we’ve only see two beautiful monarchs. One was over the wild flower field at Appleton farm in Hamilton this past weekend. The other was yesterday fluttering over the water at lighthouse beach in annisquam. Our 3 year old daughter is in awe of the Monarchs it is so exciting to watch her admire them. Will keep you posted on our monarch sightings!

Anonymous writes: I live at 8 Bungalow Road in Gloucester. It is at Wingaersheek Beach. My wife has a wonderful garden and I have seen three this year. I am not sure how many she has seen. My last sighting was about 2 weeks ago. None since.

Ellen writes: Hi Kim! Love the your beautiful photos. I spotted one lonely Monarch fluttering over the sand at Long Beach. In years past we used to watch a few of them on the beach, but this year only one so far.

Pat writes: Kim–I don’t know what happened to the comment I left earlier today reporting monarch sightings in the Binghamton NY area — a few–maybe once a day for the last week or 10 days. But I wondered how we know they aren’t the viceroy butterfly?

Sneak Peek and Premiering Tonight on Cape Ann TV: Concert for the Angels

“Songs for the Angels” a concert by Cape Ann Superstars to help fight addiction premieres this Friday, September 23 at 8pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.

This concert was recorded at Shalin Liu-Center to benefit the Police Assisted Addiction & Recovery Initiative (PAARI). The concert features Allen Estes, Willie Alexander, Fly Amero, and Marina Evans. Quentin Callewaert opens the show, and includes a special performance from Chief Campanello, the founder of the PAARI program.
The show also airs this weekend on these times and dates:
Saturday, Sept. 24 at 8 am and 7:30 pm
Sunday, Sept. 25 at 6 am and 9 pm

Super special offers September 24 Holland America Cruise Ship and Trails&Sails

How exciting that  Holland America  and Trails and Sails are coming to Gloucester and Cape Ann this weekend! There are many special offers and events to help welcome visitors. This will be the second of three big cruise ships coming into port this month to Cruiseport Gloucester. It won’t leave Gloucester harbor till 11PM.  Last time I expected sight seeing, museum visits and shopping as reasons passengers disembarked. They did that. If you go by the clicker counter, 844 (give or take another hundred), plus 650 who pre-booked excursions, came ashore.

I was surprised by how many passengers from a seemingly all inclusive cruise opted to take a whale watch trip and dine out. They did that, too. I’ll report back fun facts, but today I wanted to post about the special offers and events.

CATA created a special map for continuous downtown trolley loops (“frequency is key”) and to Rocky Neck and Rockport. The special pass covers their bus routes. What an incredible deal! They are extending operations until 10PM.  A new addition: Beauport Ambulance Services will be offering a shuttle bus for an Essex/Manchester/Cruiseport route. Kathie Gilson prepared and made hundreds of copies of a lobster roll list (a big common request), special events, and the Gimme Sound music schedule. Kudos to the volunteers, organizations and businesses for their hard work and creativity.

Cape Ann TV’s Lunch & Learn Series continues on Wednesday, October 5th,2016 at 12pm with “”The Canon FX-105 Camcorder–Beyond Automatic”” presented by Professional Video Producer, Ted Reed.

Cape Ann TV has several Canon FX-105 HD camcorders available to its members for shooting projects outside our studio. They’re light, easy to run around with for action shooting, and produce great pictures and sound as a “point and shoot” video camera.

But this camera can do a whole lot more once you take the settings off automatic.
