Are you in this video? Depends on were you were on May 5 …

If you were at Minglewood Tavern on May 5, you just might be in Brad Byrd‘s new video On My Way Down shot by Hollywood Director Brandon Rose that night.  If you can’t remember May 5, perhaps you’re the one dancing, singing the words and pointing in the air at 1:24 seconds into this video.

You may remember our series on Brad’s hit video Zero to the 101 shot by Brandon on St. Pat’s day (here’s some behind the scenes footage of that shoot).

Brad is Allen Estes‘ guest on this week’s Local Music Seen, which premieres tonight at 6:30pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.  It’s a half hour of excellent music and fascinating dialogue between two of Cape Ann’s best songwriters.  Plus you’ll get to hear three songs by Brad and Allen’s new song The Trouble with Me.

When the show is over, you can choose from half a dozen live music venues tonight with music for every taste you could imagine.   See the full live music schedule here.

Have you seen the sun today?  It’s coming back and will be here in full force soon enough, which is a good reminder to save $12 by getting your tickets now for the Gloucester Blues Festival on Saturday August 11 at Stage Fort Park.  See you there!

Yes folks, Sun will shine again, and when it does top Blues Stars will also shine on Gloucester

Yesterday’s video introduced you to the Gloucester Blues Festival performers (click here if you missed it) and promised a week-long preview.  Today, we feature the headliner Shemekia Copeland, whose stellar performance at the White House recently aired on WGBH TV.  Watch the video and you’ll know why you have to get tickets now, so you can save $12.

Just since yesterday, we’ve received new music listings, including a live Blues Concert featuring Rita Chiarelli (Canada’s Queen of the Blues) at Cape Ann Community Cinema on Friday and  T Max’s CD Release Party at the Dog Bar on Saturday.  See new updated music lineup here.

Cecropia Moth emerges at Long Beach from Christine Morey

Look what emerged from it’s crysalis last week!!  Amazing, and I understand they are nocturnal, so few people ever see them!

The video is grainy – I haven’t used that function before – but worth watching him stretch out after getting out of his tiny pod!

Wingspan of over 5", covered in a beautiful orange fur!

Stayed, stretched, and rested for the day, gone in the morning!

Devils Island From Shaun Goulart

image

Hello Joe,

Devils Island is Gloucester High School history teacher Shaun Goulart’s second film he has written which is the sophomore film to his 2009 effort, romantic comedy "In a Weeks Time". Devils Island began being written in February of 2009 and was ready to begin shooting in July 2010. This is Goulart’s second film but his directorial debut as the director of the first film could not direct due to a scheduling conflict. The shooting was on and off for a year and a half until the final scenes were shot at Cape Ann TV studios in January 2012. The film was shot all around Cape Ann most notably on Thachers Island which is the main setting for the film and fictitious "Devils Island".
Goulart’s film resume includes acting in many independent films as well as being an extra in such films as "Mall Cop", "Grown Ups", and "The Proposal" to name a few.
Devils Island was inspired by such films as Heat and Public Enemies which has the direct good vs. evil premise. The plot of Devils Island is based on a character named Jeffrey Taylor (played by Danvers native Nick Decoulos) an unemployed writer who is trying to save his relationship with Brianna (Caralyne Fondulis). Taylor takes a job on Devils Island as an assistant caretaker working alongside Trent (Shaun Goulart). All is fine until a life threatening discovery leaves Jeff in danger and fearing for his life stranded on the island.
The film has a laundry list of characters many played by local actors. Notable people include YMCA’s Rick Doucette, Gloucester High School teachers Rich Francis and Ed Reid, a handful of high school students and the late Mitch Cohen.
Cohen who passed away in October 2010 (2 months after shooting his footage) was an integral part of the film, playing a substantial character as well as lending his personal office for a scene. Mitch was very sick during the shooting of the film (unknowingly to himself or anyone else) and truly put a lot of effort into his role. He traveled out to the island in rainy rocky seas, spent the day in the raw weather and never once complained even while being asked to climb ladders and lay on the rocks.
After a three year journey, the film was finished with special thanks to many but most notably Andrew Love, Lisa Smith and all of the great folks at Cape Ann TV. They supplied all of the equipment, editing space and training. This film truly could not be completed without the tireless efforts of Love and Smith; they were a true joy to work with. The Thachers Island Association also was very accommodating while we were shooting on the island. It’s a beautiful place and really a hidden gem. This film really highlights how picturesque the island really is. Essex native and musician Jeff Fraser lent music to the film, and Ralph Oliver Jr was the necessary transportation of the cast and crew to get back and forth to the Rockport island everyday of shooting.

The film opened at the Gloucester Cinema to a packed house on Wednesday May 9th  warranting a second showing of the film. The second showing is on Wednesday June 6, 2012 at 7:30pm at the Cape Community Cinema on 21 Main Street in Gloucester above the Mystery Train. Half the door will go to the upstart Gloucester High School filmmakers club that GHS history teachers Shaun Goulart and Rich Francis are establishing.

Zip Line Update ~ Neighborhood Friends Pick Up the Speed.

Here’s a zip line update for all of you who have asked about it.  You may remember last week we showed you John’s improved zip line (see here if you missed it).  Well the neighborhood kids decided they wanted to see how fast they could go.  Wow!  It helps to be a gymnast.

Starting tomorrow, we’ll have a week-long preview of Gloucester’s first Blues Festival on August 11.  We’re all hoping this will become a tradition as Gloucester welcomes some of the world’s best Blues musicians to Stage Fort Park.  Stay tuned for some great music and video of blues musicians young and old.

There’s music going on right now all over town (11 choices today and tonight).   If you missed Orville Giddings last Thursday or Allen Estes last Sunday, you can see them together tonight at the Rhumbline — and that’s a great show!   Check out the full Sunday music lineup here.

Last of The Eastern Rigs From Jon Campbell

Jon writes-

I spent a lot of time around Gloucester over the years. As you’d leave out of the harbor, I used to see a small Eastern Rig tied up at the end of Rocky Neck past the railway. Got to thinking about how the old-timers felt about those boats, made a song.

Down here in Pt. Judith the ‘Roanne’ ended up at Mystic Seaport, and the "E Carl Rice " got cut up and put in a dumpster.

Was looking at your photos of American Eagle and thought I’d see if you wanted to use this song to put together a montage piece using some of your old pics.

Got Alan Estes to join us out at the Astoria Fisher Poets Gathering last year, but he didn’t make it this year.

Drones Club is the private club for Pt. Judith fishermen, has toilet seats from long gone boats nailed to east wall.

I’m supposed to play up at Harbor Loop this year, not sure when, here’s a last video of a song dear to our hearts down here at the water’s edge in RI.

Don’t miss the City’s biggest concert since Celebrate Gloucester

Gloucester Blues Festival ~ August 11 Stage Fort Park ~ Save $12 if you get your tickets now ~ get tickets here.

In this video, Vickie talks with producers Paul Benjamin & Bob Hastings about what we can expect.  It will be a very exciting day for Gloucester and we hope it will be the beginning of a new tradition.

Starting Monday, Paul Benjamin will be the gimmesound Artist of the Week.  He’ll give us some exciting previews of the Gloucester Blues Festival — music, video and all!

11 music choices tonight starting at 7.  Get out and party.  See the full music lineup here.

So much to do tonight ~ How do I choose?

Don’t choose.  Do it all!  OK, all might be a tad ambitious, but you can do a lot because the first show starts at 6:30 and the last one at 9:30.  See the complete music lineup here.

Tonight is your last chance to see Inge Berge at Giuseppe’s (8pm).  He’s one of our favorites and if you haven’t heard his new song with ever-so-slightly-tragic, but perfectly insightful lyrics set to a catchy, lyrical tune that is signature Inge, check it out here (you can read the lyrics too, but you don’t have to because Inge actually sings clearly, so you can understand them!)  You might want to request this song tonight, too.

At 6:30 you can see former gimmesound Artist of the Week Orville Giddings with Mark Earley at Captain Carlos.  Here’s a video of Orville at In a Pig’s Eye in Salem.  Notice how he quiets the crowd with his captivating performance

Congratulations GMG Ticket Winner to a gimmeLIVE Summer Concert

Congratulations to Diana Long, who won our GMG text to win contest for 2 tickets to the gimmeLIVE summer concert of her choice.  Diana chose Chris Isaak with Chelsea Berry opening.  (Click here if  you missed yesterday’s post with one of Chelsea’s most touching songs.)

There’s still time to enter our contest to win a VIP upgrade  (see VIP details here).  You can’t buy a VIP upgrade, but you can win it.  Just sign up for the gimmeLIVE Concert Club (click here, it’s free) and you’ll automatically be entered into a drawing to win 2 FREE VIP UPGRADES to the concert of your choice.  All you need is 2 regular tickets and you and your honey can go as VIPs!  The winner will be chosen on Friday.  Good seats are still available, but they are going fast.  Get tickets here.

Now for some sad news.  The great Doc Watson died yesterday.  His playing influenced a generation of guitarists, including one of Gloucester’s best, Allen Estes, who knew both Doc and his late son Merle.   I saw Doc with other greats including Bill Monroe several times in Bean Blossom Indiana in the 70s.  Here’s a video of Doc with Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs & Alison Krauss.  Enjoy!

There are plenty of choices for live music tonight and many of them might be willing to play a Doc Watson tune if you request it.  See full music lineup here.

Her new electric band rocks, but it’s her voice that wraps itself around your heart and won’t let go

Yes, we’ve been touting Chelsea Berry‘s new electric band lately (see this post, for example)  But it’s really her voice that captures you.  Watch this video and see what we mean.  Allen got goose bumps listening to this song when we shot Local Music Seen a couple of weeks ago.  You can see the entire show tomorrow at 6:30pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.  The show features a new song by Allen Estes and a new song by Chelsea.  Plus she closes with one of my favorites.

And you can see Chelsea with her new band open for Chris Isaak at North Shore Music Theatre on June 28.  This will be the first time Chelsea’s new band performs in public and the only Boston area Chris Isaak concert this year.  Don’t wait until it’s sold out.  Get tickets now.

It’s Tuesday in Gloucester.  Just in case you missed last Tuesday’s admonition, check it out here.  OK, now that you’re convinced to go out, click here to see tonight’s full music lineup.

Homemade Zip Line Improved

Last Sunday we showed you a video of our son’s homemade zip line built with stuff found in the garage.  He used a PVC elbow in place of a pulley because we didn’t have one.

As the week went on, friction cut a ridge in the PVC, slowing down the zip.  John noticed that it worked better in the rain (yes, moms, neither he nor his friends care about being out in the rain).

Finally, he started nagging us to get a pulley and on Friday after school we stopped at the Building Center and bought a good, strong one.  He offered to buy it with his money (earned from working various jobs) but we figured he deserved this one on us since he’d engineered the whole thing, witnessed first hand the effects of friction and figured a pulley would solve the problem.

There’s simply nothing like hands-on experiment and experience to spark a child’s thrill of discovery and inspire his quest for the best!  Here’s a video of the first zip line so you can see the improvement:

This experience also offered a chance to overcome his fear.  The first run on both zip lines was terrifying.  He simply didn’t know what would happen.  It took real courage to take those first leaps off the ladder.  Congratulations John!

Plenty of true Gloucester sounds tonight from Sea Shanteys to Bandit Kings.  Check out the music lineup here.

Neville Brothers Aaron & Charles make only one New England appearance this year

If you ever wondered why the Nevilles are known as New Orleans’ first family of funk, this video tells the story.  It was shot at Jazz Fest 3 weeks ago.  You can see Aaron with his brother Charles on sax plus the quintet at North Shore Music Theatre on June 30 (get tickets here or you can try to win tickets here).  This is their only concert in the Northeast U.S. this year (they recently returned from a wildly successful tour of Japan).

Opening for the Nevilles will be Gloucester’s favorite New Orleans transplant Henri Smith, who is assembling an all-star band for this performance.  June 30 will be a night you won’t soon forget.

There’s music all day today — it’s going on right now and will continue into the night.  You can get to most of it because the shows are spread fairly evenly throughout the day and evening.  If you start now you could take in 8 free shows (see the full music schedule here).  Where else on Earth could you do that in a friendly environment surrounded by water, beaches and one of the world’s most beautiful harbors?

Allen & Dylan Estes ~ Father & Son make a special appearance at Giuseppe’s Sunday at 6pm

Here’s something you don’t see (or hear) every day — father & son performing  together with voices that blend this beautifully.  In this video, Allen & Dylan Estes sing one of Allen’s classic songs on his show Local Music Seen.  Tomorrow (Sunday) you can see them at Giuseppe’s — and they’re even better live!  You might want to call ahead to be sure you get a seat.  Music starts at 6pm.  Take your kid(s) and get inspired.

Now for tonight.  It’s time to get out and DANCE!  Gloucester is HOT tonight with all kinds bands ready to ROCK!  Take your pick or try to fit them all in.  Whew!  Check out the hot music lineup here.

“Without cover of the night would you still be the light he is drawn to?”

Any doubt that Chelsea Berry is one of Cape Ann’s finest songwriters will be vanquished by her haunting new tune.  Chelsea uses the first TV performance of this song to show off her powerful, dramatic, versatile voice.  Then she reveals how she wrote the song, proving that  Livingston Taylor was right when he said, “A voice of remarkable power and control with a joyous soul. Brave and bright, Chelsea Berry is the real thing.”  Watch the video and see what we mean.

You can see Chelsea open for Chris Isaak at North Shore Music Theatre on June 28 with her new band.  Imagine the electric version of this song!

Lots of opportunities to start the weekend early tonight from solo acoustic to open mic to DJ to Rock, Reggae and more.  See the full music lineup here.
