Two rising stars coming to Rockport next weekend

Colorado native Megan Burtt returns to Cape Ann to perform with Boston-based Amy Black at the Old Sloop Coffeehouse next Saturday, November 3.  I could tell you how good they are, but I’ll let the videos speak for themselves.

As you’ll see in this video I shot last year when Megan performed with Chelsea Berry, her stories are as entertaining as her songs — and this song will send chills up your spine!

More Megan Burtt videos here.

Over 3 dozen live shows to choose from this weekend (see complete live music listings here).  Better get out there before the storm hits!

The Kids That The GMG Farm Bar and Grille Bikini Speedo Dodgeball Tournament Helped

Aria McElhenny writes-

Hi Joey, Frankie and Ryan,

As the weather starts to get chilly, here at Next Step we all start thinking about one thing: bikini & speedo dodgeball.

Thought you guys and the 2012 tournament participants might like a reminder of how their hard work raising funds at the tourney had an amazing impact on teens with cancer. The video below is from our summer youth conference for teen cancer survivors. These youth spent four days together learning how to manage their disease, laughing, riding a zip line and sharing their stories. The music in the video is an original song written by the youth and recorded at the conference.

Way to go dodge-ballers, you changed a lot of lives this year.

Thanks again from all of us at Next Step,

Aria McElhenny
Development Director

Taken From The Outdoor Deck At The Seaport Grille Cruiseport- Turbine Panorama (Must Have Been Photoshopped)

What you are looking at is a mirage.

This isn’t really happening because as we all know Marine Industrial Activity and Non-Marine Industrial Activity Can’t Co-exist.  You can’t have all this marine industrial activity and loud cranes operating right in front of the area where people are eating their lunch on an open air deck.  That’s just preposterous!!!

What’s Next?  Dogs and Cats Living Together?

From Ghostbusters-

Dr. Peter Venkman: This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
Mayor: What do you mean, “biblical”?
Dr Ray Stantz: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath of God type stuff.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Exactly.
Dr Ray Stantz: Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes…
Winston Zeddemore: The dead rising from the grave!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!
Mayor: All right, all right! I get the point!

BTW, that Fishing boat in the left of the frame?  Must have also been photoshopped, you can’t have fishing oats tied up at places where there are open air-restaurants.  No-way- No how! Photoshopped or mirage- you make the call.

Are you Kidding Me Brad Pitt????

This may be the all time dumbest commercial and expose on taking oneself too seriously of all times.  OH MY LOOOOOORD DUDE, SERIOUSLY????

I hope you got paid ALLL THE MONEY and I Mean ALL THE MONEY for this ad.

Listen Haters Gonna Hate. I’m no Brad Pitt Hater.  I actually liked Brad Pit and his body of work… alllll the way up to ten minutes ago when I saw this commercial on TV.

Dude, you don’t have enough money that you gotta sell out like this?????  Someone needs to fire their agent STAT! Agent needs to go, ad agency needs to go, handlers need to go, anyone associated with this debacle needs to go.

What’s next? Tampon commercials?  Midol commercials?  Bath and Bodyworks commercials?

Douchebag says what?

Gloucester scores 2 shows this week in The Noise Magazine Live Show Picks

I love being right (just like Paul F.)  I predicted Gloucester’s music scene would benefit as a result of The Noise Magazine publisher/editor, T Max, moving here.   Check this out: The Noise Live Show Picks for this week include not one, but two Gloucester shows, putting us on par with Cambridge for the week’s picks.

So I figured you might enjoy a video series I published in February where T Max walks Gloucester’s music scene, visiting many of our excellent music venues, plus you’ll see chance encounters with some of Gloucester’s finest characters.  Here’s the first one:

Watch the other T Max in Gloucester videos here.

Well, T Max is right.  It’s an excellent week for music in Gloucester.  See the full live music schedule here.

Wind Turbine Transportation Time- Lapse Video From Jay Groccia

Jay Groccia from http://www.onsitestudios.com/   writes-

Hi Joey,

I was hired by Varian Semiconductor to produce a time-lapse documentary film of the installation of their wind turbine.

I started shooting this week and I met Fred of Bodin Historic Photo while the hostess was getting me a coffee Gloucester Cruiseport restaurant. He asked me a few questions about the project and then we said goodbye. The next day I walked into his shop and as soon as I entered he exclaimed, "Hey, I met you last night!". We chatted more and then he introduced me to your blog.

Here is a sneak peek of the film – it shows the barge arriving and a blade getting transported to the site.

Zip Line Kid & Friend Pier Jumping in October ~ Why would I want to live anywhere else on Earth?

Days like today confirm our decision years ago to move to Gloucester was spot on!  Check this out (Magnolia Pier 10/20/12: Air 68, Water 58, Winds WSW 15-20mph, Seas 6-8ft.)

Not your average college dean ~ listen up tomorrow at 9am on 104.9FM

In case you missed this post, Next Thursday (10/25) is the 2012-13 Berklee in Gloucester season kickoff at The Gloucester House featuring the Jim Odgren Quintet, who are helping raise money to send a Gloucester student to Berklee.  You may remember that this is the brainchild of Berklee’s Dean of Performance, Matt Marvuglio.  Now, when you read the word Dean, what do envision?  Bet it’s not the guy playing the flute solo at about 2 minutes into this video (Jim Odgren is on alto sax in this video too).

Here’s another video of Matt at The Gloucester House on March 30 with Berklee professor Ed Saindon on vibes and students Nori Shiota on bass and Jazz Robertson on drums.

Matt told me he’s planning to come to the concert on Thursday.  Perhaps we can convince him to sit in.

How cool is it that you can see the top professors, students — even the dean — of the best music school in the world right here in your own backyard!  Well, Aurelia Nelson, host of the show Curtain Up on North Shore 104.9 thinks it’s pretty cool, so she asked me to join her for tomorrow’s show to talk a little about it.  So tune in to 104.9FM tomorrow at 9AM.

But before all that, you’ve got 13 venues with live music to choose from tonight — perfect number for a beautiful October Saturday!  See the complete live music listing here.

Hot and Spicy Gloucester

If variety is the spice of life, then Gloucester & Cape Ann are hot and spicy this weekend with an impressive variety of live music at over 2 dozen shows.  Rock, Blues, Jamband, Jazz, New Orleans, Folk, Classical, Funk, Latin, Reggae, Soul, Ska, Celtic, DJs.  Whatever you want, you got it.  Check out the complete live music listings for Gloucester & Cape Ann here.  Often you get multiple genres on the same stage.  Here’s one of our favorite local bands, The Runaround Sound, downstairs at The Middle East in Cambridge fusing Latin & Ska into a single song.  You can dance to them at Minglewood tonight.

Cape Ann MARKETWatch Video and 3rd quarter condo analysis From Kenny MacCarthy

Cape Ann MARKETWatch

Thursday October 18, 2012

From: Gloucester MA

Kenny writes-

Now we’re slowing down. Only 7 new properties this week. And I took last weekend off so wasn’t able to view any open houses. (Went to see HH Dalai Lama in Boston.)

But the news is that the condo market has bottomed. We’ve been saying that for a year or so but now it’s official. How do I know? Simple: prices are going up.

Click to see the video this week for Gloucester and Rockport condo trending as well as the new inventory. Here’s Kenny’s number for your real estate needs-
