Gloucester Atlhletes Garner Honors

Hi Joey-
Just another quiet GMG fan, but wanted to break my silence to share this- http://www.caasports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=43053&SPID=3447&DB_OEM_ID=8500&ATCLID=204947734

It’s a pretty cool honor for any Division I athlete, so I was obviously happy for my brother when I heard- but was pretty blown away when I read the full article. It really speaks to the type of community, and quality of the programs we have here in Gloucester, that Nate and Liam got this honor at the same time.

I guess some people could argue that it’s a coincidence they’re both from the same hometown, but I think the (Gloucester, Mass.) after each of their names really says it all.

Thanks-Erin

New Businesses In Essex

From Deej Viau-

Dear Joey,

Our good friend has recently opened two new businesses on Cape Ann.
Attached are some photos of two logos Bob designed and the signs he built and installed for our friend Jane Linland. Body in Balance Pilates and Soul Expressions….gifts to nurture the soul both located at 144 Main Street in Essex. Great location, plenty of parking, beautiful new studio, unique and affordable gifts. It really is fantastic. Folks should check it out. I worked for Jane for ten years at her great pre school Lil’ Sprouts which is right down on Scott’s Way also in Essex. She is a great person. Three wonderful businesses.

Thanks so much,
Best,

MOTIF No. 1 DAY FESTIVAL

Downtown Rockport will come alive with music, art, and poetry on Motif No. 1 Day, slated for Saturday, May 22nd. Motif No. 1 Day is a long-standing Rockport tradition, a chance to celebrate Rockport’s famous fishing shack, Motif No. 1, the subject of countless paintings and photographs throughout the last century. The festival includes interactive art events such as the Sidewalk Chalk Art contest, along with great food, live music, historical presentations, art activities for children, and the Words Before Dinner event, a poetry reading featuring the beauty and history of Cape Ann as its theme.

Jazz, Celtic and bands will be featured, with appearances by singer-songwriter Brad Byrd, Marina Evans, Alek Razdan & A-Train, and the Rockport Legion Band among others. The day also includes featured events at participating businesses and an exciting array of community events such as a reception for the Motif No. 1 Photography Show at the Rockport Art Association http://www.rockportartassn.org, community concerts presented by Rockport Music http://www.rcmf.org, and a coffeehouse at the Old Sloop Church.

Mike’s Place

After a long day of working on the house on Saturday we decided to grab some pizza from Mike’s Place. We ordered “the Favorite” with extra cheese. The favorite is their cheese pizza with sweet sauce. I don’t usually like sweet sauce on pizza, but this was very good.  Obviously the extra cheese isn’t for someone who is watching their waistline.  It’s nice that Mike’s is open late and has the option of take out or you can eat at one of their booths.

Now I need to try Igloo, the ice cream/slushie place, they just opened next door.

A-Train Orchestra at the Madfish

best,
deb.

Cape Ann Youth Lacrosse – Giving Back

Cape Ann Youth Lacrosse - Click for Slide Show

On Sunday morning, May 16, 2010, the Titans and Spartans of Cape Ann Youth Lacrosse program participated in a morning of giving back.    These young Lacrosse players, In the spirit of giving back, they cut, clean and rake the grounds of the WWII Memorial Monument.

The monument recognized the tremendous sacrifices made by the men and women from Gloucester, Massachusetts and honors the individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice.

At 10:30, Mr. Michael Linquata a WWII Veteran the owner of The Gloucester House Restaurant, and one of the originators and main movers behind the memorial construction spoke to the players about the memorials long journey from a simple vision to the completion of one of the most striking WWII memorials you will ever see set on a beautiful plot across from the boulevard overlooking Gloucester harbor.  It was honor and privilege for our team to have a part in enhancing the memorials site.

Thank You to the girls, boys and parents of Cape Ann Youth Lacrosse for your time and effort, YOU made a difference!

Special Thanks to:

North Shore Pro Landscape – Jim O’Brien for the use of the landscape equipment and leading this effort.

Manchester Athletic Club – Brian Fleming for Coffee, water, muffins and donuts to keep the kids and parents energized.

Bob Viau Cape Ann Artist

A Call To Artists

From Bob Viau;
First and foremost, a big thank you for highlighting Cape Ann Artists.  I am responding to your “Call for Artists”.
Attached is a photograph and description of a sculpted 3 x6  relief  comprised of bronze, aluminum, copper and brass I created entitled “Philadelphia”.

There is quite a history behind this piece in that at the time I completed the work it went on display at a corporate office in Boston where a friend of mine worked.  His company was relocating and I was notified to pick up the piece.  When I arrived the next morning I discovered the sculpture was gone and only the brass frame remained mounted on the wall.  This sculpture of Philadelphia was nearly 400 pounds.  It would be no easy task to steal it but someone managed to do just that.  With the help of my friend and the police, the search was on.  I showed photographs of the piece to everyone.  No one had any information.  Completely discouraged, I knew I would probably never see the piece again.  Living in Gloucester and seven years later I get a phone call out of the blue from an old friend who was an electrician in the wharf buildings in Boston.  He says “Bobby, you know that sculpture of yours that was stolen? I have it”.  You can imagine the shock.  He explained he caught some guys moving it into an office building.  He told them it was stolen property and the name Robert Viau was sculpted into the back.  They handed it over and took off.  It turns out they were connected to an advertising agency that was located a few floors up from the Boston office it was originally displayed at.  When they heard the business was relocating, they came down in the night and stole it off the wall.  It is back now and currently for SALE for private or corporate collection.  The piece is listed at $13,500.  I am offering a 15% commission to anyone who can complete full sale of the piece.  All the work on my website is my own at www.studiovo.com .  Please visit my studio at the 121R at the East Gloucester Marina.

Best, Bob Viau
