Ardelle Report From Al Bezanson

0630  Oct 9th…. Ardelle is docked at Baltimore Marine Center in Canton close to Pride of Baltimore II and a flock of other schooners who will be participating in the 127 mile Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race to Portsmouth, VA.  The race begins Thursday afternoon and the wind that is forecasted may be a bit challenging for some of the gaff rigged boats.  Harold is among a lot friends there, and Canton/Fells Point is swarming with cordial volunteers.  About 38 schooners are entered.  Each boat will have a transponder aboard for tracking.  Avid schooner fans might enjoy watching the race all night, keeping an eye on the weather buoys and wind forecast along the route.  On Saturday there is a Pig Roast and Awards Ceremony that goes on for most of the day in Portsmouth.  More information here:

All third- and fifth-graders in the Gloucester Schools get the experience, which is funded in part by the City’s Community Development Block Grant Program and in part by each schools PTO. In addition to a two-hour cruise, the youngsters also spend part of their day visiting the Cape Ann Museum to learn about our city’s cultural history.

In photo below, Tom Ellis, skipper of the Lannon, instructs the youngsters in proper shipboard behavior prior to leaving the dock.

Ardelle In Washington Photos From Richard P. Blatchford and Live Broadcast of The 2012 NEA National Heritage Fellowships Concert

Dear Joey,

A cousin in Maine frequently forwards me pieces from Good Morning Gloucester.  She sent the one on Capt. Harold Burnham’s voyage to Washington.  I went to see Harold and the Ardelle this morning in Washington.  Penny (the cousin) said you might be interested in the pictures I took.

Why is a person from Maryland interested in Gloucester and the Ardelle?  Well, I was born in Lynn.  My dad was Gloucester born and bred.  He was James W. and had brothers who lived lifelong in Gloucester.  They were Roger (Gloucester police) and Howard (Gloucester postal service).  As a boy, I spent many summers in Essex at another uncle’s egg farm.  As a result, Essex marinas & boat yards and Gloucester have always been an interest.

If you like the pics, feel free to use them.  Just give credit to Richard P. Blatchford as the photographer.  :-)  That would be me.

Schooner Ardelle Arrives In Washington!!! Photos from Janice Rathjen

Hi Joey,
I thought I’d pass along a few pictures my wife (Janice Rathjen) took this afternoon of the schooner Ardelle arriving in Washington DC. We were out for an afternoon sail, and met up with the Ardelle as it was coming up the Potomac River. The picture below shows her approaching the Woodrow Wilson Bridge (aka the Capital Beltway) from the south, with the Washington Monument visible under the bridge.

Cheers, from a former Gloucester resident.

Ardelle crew in Solomons

Joey — Enroute to DC the intrepid crew of Ardelle D&B’d (docked and breakfasted) in Solomons, MD courtesy of Aram Neresian, owner of the schooner Heron.  Aram is a generous, affable, funny, entertaining, smart  fellow and a fine cook to boot.  A credit to the schoonerhead class, as you like to call us.   Many a schooner has been the recipient of his hospitality and there was no way Ardelle could pass by without a stopover.

I am sure Aram did his best to persuade Harold to join the upcoming Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.

Revel in this last September weekend and get ready for the Rocktober spirit

Well it’s not quite October, but beer festivals are already starting up.  Tonight Alchemy will host live music with Marina Evans and Dave Brown (normally they don’t have music on Thursdays) to help celebrate North Shore Beer Week featuring homemade brew’s from Cape Ann Brewery.  Check out her new EP and maybe you’ll want to request one of those songs.

Then you’ve got a choice of 21 artists Friday and Saturday (see schedule here)

Next Saturday (Oct 6) is the last 2012 Celtic Music Sail aboard the Lannon.  If you’ve never experienced truly acoustic music – no mics, no amps, no speakers – on a schooner in full sail, this should be on your bucket list.  (Now, I’m not suggesting that you’re not likely to make it until next summer, but why take the chance, right?)  You know you’re getting top musicianship when the wind is literally the only thing between you and the sound of voices and instruments.

(See more Michael O’Leary videos here)

Take advantage of our thriving music scene during these last few days of September, with over 30 artists performing this weekend (remember, the weekend starts tonight).  See the complete schedule of all live music in Gloucester and Cape Ann here.

Latest Progress Report on Ardelle’s Voyage To Washington

The Ardelle is on its way again. Harold figures he’s lost a day but presses on up the Delaware river towards the cannel that leads into the Chesapeake Bay.

Mass Views: Fishing schooner and fish market, Gloucester Harbor 1940 aprox Boston Public Library

You see the building that says Fish Market?  That is the building where the fire was last week that the Gloucester Fire department quickly snuffed out.  Look at Jay Albert’s pictures here from the scene  His pictures are from the back of the building which is now a wood furniture maker.

Look at the stern of the the big schooner in the middle of the photo.  off the stern is The Phyllis A.  The oldest gillnetter in Gloucester and undergoing a major restoration project.

Read about and look at pictures of the restoration here in these Phyllis A posts

Thank you to Adam Gaffin at www.universalhub.com for the link to the picture.
