An Offer To All #GloucesterMA Election Candidates:

As you all know we don’t take political stances here or endorse candidates but what I’d like to offer is an invitation for any candidate that is running for office in Gloucester to submit a video explaining why they think they are best suited for the position they are running for. The easiest way to do this would be to upload the video to YouTube.

The videos will be released once and placed on GMG at 7PM on the following night that they are received. If more than one video is submitted to me at goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com then the first one that is submitted will be aired the following evening at 7PM and the next one submitted will be posted the following evening at 7PM. There will be a link in each candidates post containing their video to goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com which will have all previously submitted candidate’s videos.

Once they are submitted they will be added to https://2015gloucestermaelection.wordpress.com/ where all the videos will be available for viewing at any time on the same page.

In the title of the video it should list the candidate’s name- position they are running for and the words “GMG submission”.

As always the GMG politics disclaimer- any post on these pages containing a candidate does not imply an endorsement for any candidate. Comments on www.goodmorninggloucester.com for these video submissions on the blog will be turned off for these posts as well.

Hopefully this will serve to help candidates get their message across.

Follow-up trash and recycling pickup today (Wednesday)

Dear Friends:

My apologies, because this is a holiday week, trash/recycle pickup is one day later than normal. Below is the plan for trash/recycling for the rest of the week:

If your normal pickup day is Monday or Tuesday, bring your trash and recycling to curbside today (Wednesday).

If your normal pickup day is Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, please put your trash out one day later than your normal pickup day.

If you are desperate to get rid of your recycling, you can bring it to the Hiltz Recycling Center at 24 Kondelin Road. Note that only recyclables can be brought to this location–not trash.

If it gets to be late in the day and no one has arrived yet, call the DPW at 978-281-9785

STORM UPDATE PARKING BAN 10PM TONIGHT (with a list of where to park)

Parking ban at 10 tonight

Dear Friends:

   The mayor has issued the following emergency declaration concerning the snowstorm expected to arrive overnight and continue into tomorrow:

Effective at 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, the city has declared a snow emergency and parking ban on all city streets due to the impending snow storm.

From 10 o’clock tonight until 8 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 16, all vehicles are banned from parking on city streets.

Violators of this emergency declaration are subject to ticketing and towing at the owner’s expense. Towing and ticketing will begin immediately at 10 o’clock tonight. Residents may park in all municipal and school parking lots during the parking ban. Please be aware that due to the nature of this storm, adjustments to the snow emergency and parking ban may be made.

Traveling by vehicle or on foot will be treacherous during the duration of the storm. It is strongly suggested you do not travel during this time period.

Your cooperation during this parking ban is necessary for efficient and safe snow removal efforts.

Please make every effort to check on your elderly neighbors. The bitter cold associated with this storm may cause additional risks to individuals. Please take the proper precautions.

Trash collection

At this time, trash collection will be on a holiday schedule

Where can I park?

Off-street parking areas including:

  • Harbor Parking Lot (near Gloucester House Restaurant)
  • Main Street Parking Lot
  • Manuel F. Lewis Parking Lot
  • Pleasant Street Parking Lot
  • St. Peter’s Square (Town Landing Parking Lot)
  • Fitz Hugh Lane Lot (Roger’s St next to TD Bank)
  • Boynton Way Lot (off Rogers St in between Pilot House lot and House of Mitch)
  • School Parking Lots may also be used for off-street parking

Vehicles parked in parking lots must shovel their cars out of the space.

City parking ban extended until noon Tuesday; schools closed again

Dear Friends:

The mayor has issued the following announcement concerning the ongoing snowstorm.

The City of Gloucester snow emergency and parking ban is being extended due to the continued snow storm.

From now until noon on Tuesday, Feb. 10, all vehicles are banned from parking on city streets.

Violators of this emergency declaration are subject to ticketing and towing at the owners expense. Residents may park in municipal and school parking lots during the parking ban. We have provided extra time so all cars may be removed from parking lots no later than noon on Tuesday. Your cooperation during this parking ban is necessary for efficient and safe snow removal efforts.

This is a historic amount of snow. Please have patience as the Department of Public Works continues to work through areas that require snow removal. Please make every effort to shovel out hydrants at or near your homes.

The Gloucester Public Schools as well as the Public library will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Please check on your elderly neighbors.

Snow removal 

The strong winds associated with this storm are causing heavy drifting throughout the city and in East Gloucester in particular. The DPW crews are working to keep the main roads open. Please be patient as snow removal is requiring multiple passes just to keep the roads open.

 

Trash pickup

 

At this writing (4 p.m.) trash pickup (Monday trash schedule) is still on for tomorrow, but please double-check the City website before putting out your trash.

Please stay off the roads

The Gloucester Police Department has issued the following request: 

In addition to the current parking ban, the Gloucester Police Department is requestingALL vehicles stay off the road at this time. We are responding to a large amount of spinouts and accidents as a result of the ongoing storm. It is unsafe to drive in these conditions and we are asking for your cooperation for the duration of this storm.

Please stay off the roadways during this storm for your own safety and the safety of other motorists and pedestrians

 

 

Focusing on the Future of the Fishing Industry

Message from City Council President Paul McGeary:

“The City Council and the city’s Fisheries Commission are holding a joint meeting on the current state and future of the fishing industry. The meeting will be held on Friday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. in the Kyrouz Auditorium at City Hall. 

Mark Ring, the chair of the Fisheries Commission, and I decided to hold the meeting to provide an opportunity for city, state and federal officials to meet with representatives of the fishing industry–both those who work on the sea and those who work ashore–and the public to assess the current state of the industry and to help identify what steps can be taken to preserve and help prosper this industry that is so important to Gloucester.

The forum will have two focuses:

  • Short-term needs of the industry: How do we preserve the infrastructure and help those hurt by recent cutbacks in allowable catch survive the next few years, which are likely to be difficult ones for the industry?
  • Long-term future of the industry: What are the options for our fleet and those businesses that depend on it in the long term?

Representatives of government, industry and advocates will be present to share their ideas. It’s a chance for all of us who have busy lives and don’t always have the time to closely follow the events that impact our fishermen and shoreside businesses to hear firsthand from those most affected by the current situation. As well, it’s a forum for people with ideas on how to protect and help grow the fishing industry to air them.

Dru, pictured above and below, reports that it wasn’t too bad running towards, or even diving in. The worst was running back to the beach against the bitter biting blast that had picked up during the event, and the fact that he couldn’t feel his feet!

Very Important Meetings Regarding Development of Former Olivia’s Restaurant Site at Good Harbor Beach and Retreat House

There will be two important meetings in Ward 1 this week.

The first will present plans to renovate the Eastern Point Retreat House.

The second will showcase plans to redevelop the former Olivia’s restaurant site.

Details are below.

Former Site of Amelia’s/Olivia’s Restaurant at Good Harbor Beach

The meeting on redevelopment of the former Olivia’s Restaurant will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 10 a.m. at the Olivia’s site at 78 Thatcher Road.

The proposal for a six-unit condominium development by 78 Thatcher Road LLC would require a special City Council permit under the zoning ordinance.

Developer John Flaherty has already received necessary variances from the Zoning Board of Appeals from the city’s height and side lot requirements. This is a chance to get a look at the project as it will go before the Council and to delve into details.

Eastern Point Retreat House

I have received the following communication from Father Dennis Yesalonia, associate vice-president of the New England Province of the Jesuit Order, which owns the Eastern Point Retreat House:

Dear Eastern Point Neighbor:

On Aug. 15, 2013, the Gonzaga Eastern Point Retreat House hosted a meeting to introduce our neighbors to the proposed capital improvements to the Retreat House. At that time, our proposal consistal of:

  1. The demolition and reconstruction of the retreatants wing; and
  2. The reconstruction of a portion of the mansion.

Following that meeting, our development team continued its review of the proposed capital project end came to the conclusion that it could be scaled back significantly, while still accomplishing the desired goal of an enhanced living environment for retreatants.

By this letter, I would like to invite you to joke us at 37 Niles Pond Road at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, for a presentation of our revised, scaled-back project. The principal changes to the Retreat House will be:

  1. Demolishing the existing retreatants wing and replacing it with a three-story updated and code-compliant wing, which will be reconstructed on the footprint of the existing retreatants wing. It will also be connected to the mansion at the ground and second floor levels to provide handicap access. The new retreatants wing will accommodate 38 retreatants, down from 40 in the existing retreatants wing. In addition, two suites, which had accommodated Jesuit priests in the existing retreatants wing, will not be included in the reconstructed retreatants wing; and
  2. Interior improvements and minor renovations to the mansion.

Highlights from Inauguration Ceremony 2014

The Mayor’s, School Committee’s, and City Councilor’s inauguration and oath of office ceremonies were held at Kyrouz Auditorium at City Hall on Wednesday, January 1, 2014.  A warm welcome was given by Senator Tarr, followed by the pledge of allegiance, led by Baylee Kirk, the national anthem sung by Gordon Baird, and speech given by Art Haven founder David Brooks. Mayor Kirk gave a very inspiring inaugural address, highlighting her past term’s accomplishments and goals for the coming term. The Cape Ann Symphony String Quartet provided lovely background music for the event and Allison Doody gave an outstanding performance of Katy Perry’s Roar.

The Renewal of Newell Stadium hits the finish line, with a helicopter fly-by, rising of the flag, ribbon cutting and a review of all the athletic teams, a day of celebration, and Gloucester has won every game played on the New Balance Field at Newel Stadium. ABSOUTLY PERFECT !!

City Councilor Paul McGeary forwards-

Fifth graders from the West Parish School took a field trip aboard the Thomas E. Lannon on Tuesday, Oct. 2. All third- and fifth-graders in the Gloucester Schools get the experience, which is funded in part by the City’s Community Development Block Grant Program and in part by each schools PTO. In addition to a two-hour cruise, the youngsters also spend part of their day visiting the Cape Ann Museum to learn about our city’s cultural history.
