Although it sounded so interesting, I very unfortunately missed the Dogtown Days lecture program held at the Cape Ann Museum as I was covering the Rockport Harvestfest (we oftentimes say on GMG that we are incredibly blessed that here on Cape Ann we have an embarrassment of riches in wonderful and worthwhile things to do and see). I did however attend the reception held afterward at the Sawyer Free. This is the second annual Dogtown Days event sponsored by the group of citizens Friends of Dogtown, a relatively newly formed outfit dedicated to restoring, protecting, and celebrating Dogtown, along with the far reaching goals to construct a visitor’s center and to help mitigate the ongoing misuse of the landscape.
Mary Weissblum’s Swamp Cake
Two of the highlights of the reception were Mary Weissblum’s Swamp Cake and Cape Ann Brew Pub’s colonial Dier Beer, both made with ingredients mentioned in historical accounts of Dogtown. Mary is going to provide GMG readers with the Swamp Cake recipe, spiced with ginger and nutmeg, and super delicious. Dylan L’Abbe-Lindquist’s Dier beer was outstanding and is going to be available at the Brew Pub in about a week. The brew was richly dark, made chocolatey in color almost, from the molasses and special carmelized flavored hops. Most amazingly, Dylan and his wife, along with their little baby, scoured Dogtown trails for authentic ingredients, which include Staghorn Sumac, winterberries, cranberries, and beach plums–it truly is a wonderfully flavorful brew. Ask for it at the Brew Pub, you won’t be disappointed.

Niaz Dorry from NAMA gave the audience at the Rockport Harvesfest seafood throwdown a stellar demonstration on how to clean squid. I can’t post all the Instagrams here on GMG but you can go to my Instagram page to see the series.
Squid is very easy to clean and to cook and I love to order it out too. One of our favorite Gloucester restaurants for calamari is the Cape Ann Brew Pub, where it is always fried to crisp perfection and never rubbery from overcooking. Where ever I have tried squid in Rhode Island, they almost always serve it with bright yellow banana peppers. Does anyone know if any of our local restaurants serve squid with banana peppers?

Jeremy Goldberg, owner of Cape Ann Brewing Co. and his incredible crew have just opened their new canning facility on Whittemore Street in Gloucester…and it is gorgeous. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything so shiny and clean! I don’t claim to know much about the process of brewing beer, but I can say that their new facility and equipment are incredibly impressive.
On Friday evening they welcomed their “Mug Club” members to tour their new digs and I was happy to tag along. To use their own words, “Fisherman’s beer — whose bold flavor and character reflect the spirit and courage of the sailors of the North Atlantic fishing fleet — is a tribute to hard work and a salute to friendships that endure.” Well, it is clear that is true, when in the presence of this group of friends/co-coworkers. They were excited, enthusiastic, and, as they should be, very proud of what they are accomplishing.
Be on the lookout for the news cans…each design proudly showcasing the Fishermen’s Memorial Statue…and don’t forget to stop by the Pub at Cape Ann Brewing for some great eats, entertainment, and a seat on Gloucester’s Harbor before the nice weather is behind us!

Well it’s not quite October, but beer festivals are already starting up. Tonight Alchemy will host live music with Marina Evans and Dave Brown (normally they don’t have music on Thursdays) to help celebrate North Shore Beer Week featuring homemade brew’s from Cape Ann Brewery. Check out her new EP and maybe you’ll want to request one of those songs.

Next Saturday (Oct 6) is the last 2012 Celtic Music Sail aboard the Lannon. If you’ve never experienced truly acoustic music – no mics, no amps, no speakers – on a schooner in full sail, this should be on your bucket list. (Now, I’m not suggesting that you’re not likely to make it until next summer, but why take the chance, right?) You know you’re getting top musicianship when the wind is literally the only thing between you and the sound of voices and instruments.

My sister-in-law and her boyfriend are visiting from Cincinnati, Ohio. Liv is here too, taking a few days off from the hubbub of NYC. I am having so much fun giving the grand tour of our island that I feel as though I am on staycation while they are here vacationing. Our guests arrived late Tuesday night and we had a classic New England dinner waiting for them, with fresh off-the-boat Captain Joe and Sons steamed lobsters (two for each as they are so affordable), red cabbage and carrot coleslaw, potato salad, Alexandra’s olive bread, and blueberry cake with whip cream.
Yesterday after touring the Gloucester Harbor Walk, we stopped at Virgilios for take-out sandwiches to bring to the Dog Bar Breakwater for lunch. Then off to Good Harbor Beach for a swim before dinner.
We had a wonderfully fun dinner at The Pub at Cape Ann Brewing Company. Fried calamari for me, beer-marinated steak tips for Liv, delicious fish cakes for Tom, and Amy and Arnold both had the yummy haddock tortillas. Everyone enjoyed their beer selection from the unique and varied beer menu. Liv’s choice was especially interesting; a refreshing summer ale, their Saison, brewed with strawberries and rhubarb.
Today we’re off to visit Willowdale Estate, whale watch, and then a late night birthday dinner for my husband Tom at the fabulous Duckworth’s!
