Celebrate and Be Celebrated this Earth Day!

It has been a long winter and now that the snow has finally melted, it is time to give the City we love a good Spring Cleaning! So here is your chance!!   In observance of Earth Day we are asking folks to turn out for a citywide clean up on Saturday, April 23rd. And after you are done cleaning, you are invited to an Earth Day Concert featuring Chelsea Berry and friends at the Cape Ann Brewery from 6 to 8 pm!
Interested participants (all ages welcome!) should plan to meet at Stage Fort Park Visitors Center Saturday morning starting at 9 am until noon to pick up gloves and City provided yellow trash and clear recycling bags. A limited number of pick sticks will be available so volunteers are encouraged to bring their own tools if they want. The clean up will take place rain or shine. The Clean City Initiative will be focusing on Stage Fort Park from 9 to noon, the One Hour at a Time Gang will be working downtown, but the clean up is citywide and participants are encouraged to choose a public area in Gloucester they would like to see cleaned up. We are also asking different groups to reach out to their members and pick a problem area to clean that day. We will also have a list of suggested sites on hand, if folks need ideas.

Berry Green Earth Day Concert April 23rd from 6 – 8 at The Brewery
Chelsea (Berry) will be doing an Earth Day Concert at The Brewery (from 6 to 8 pm) that night along with Pete Lindberg and Jake Pardee. Anyone can go, not just volunteers, but it is hoped that volunteers go and be celebrated for their work. All ages are welcome!

CAPE ANN SYMPHONY MARCH KOTO MAGIC CONCERT RAISES FUNDS FOR JAPAN RELIEF

Over 500 people attended the Cape Ann Symphony’s Koto Magic Concert on Sunday, March 27 at the Fuller Auditorium. Over $2200 in funds were raised for Japan relief and over 400 handmade paper cranes were given to audience members that donated to the International Red Cross for earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan. Cape Ann Symphony donated a percentage of ticket proceeds from the concert and raised additional funds through donations from the audience to aid Japan Relief efforts.

Cape Ann Symphony President Tom Class told the audience that it was "purely coincidental that we would be featuring the Koto at this time, but wonderfully appropriate under the circumstances and we will donate a percentage of the proceeds of our ticket sales to the International Red Cross for Japanese relief." He then invited the audience to donate as well, in return for which each person would receive a small origami crane, created by the Boston Origami Project, whose members handmade the colorful printed cranes in a variety of colors and prints including tie dye, flowers, polka dots and animal prints in the Fuller lobby all afternoon. According to Cape Ann Symphony principal oboist Akane Inoue who organized the collaboration with the Boston Origami Project, “We are so happy for the tremendous outpouring of support from the Cape Ann Symphony audience!”

President Class reported that Conductor Yoichi Udagawa’s family in Japan, together with the families of several other Japanese members of our orchestra including Akane Inoue, was safe. "We are grateful for that," he said. "But we should also be mindful of the great need and thankful that we can do our small part to help." "It is so gratifying to be a part of such a generous organization as the Cape Ann Symphony," declared Maestro Udagawa.

The Koto, an ancient Japanese stringed instrument, whose origins date back 1500 years was featured at the concert. This beautiful, harp-like instrument was played by soloist Yuki Yasuda in two original pieces with the orchestra commissioned by Cape Ann Symphony, East Wind, composed by Takashi Koto and Concertino No. 3 for Koto and Orchestra by Martin Schreiner. Both composers were in attendance and received standing ovations.

The program also included Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri and Dvorak’s Symphony No.8, which received a standing ovation at the close of the concert.

The Open Door Empty Bowl Dinner May 12 at Cruiseport Gloucester

Hi Joey,
We would really appreciate it if you would let GMG readers know they can mark their calendars for The Open Door’s annual Empty Bowl Dinner on Thursday, May 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cruiseport Gloucester.

The meal is simple—soup, bread and a cookie. Guests can choose and keep a soup bowl handcrafted for this community event. The bowl goes home as an unspoken reminder that somewhere someone’s bowl is empty.  We have some really great soups this year, and the bowls are some of the best I have ever seen.

As usual, parking is available at Cruiseport or people can park at Good Harbor Beach and take the trolley service provided by CATA to and from the event site.

Tickets this year are $15 ($10 for children under 10) and available at the door. Cash, check or charge accepted.

All proceeds from this event benefit The Open Door Summer Lunch and The Open Door Mobile Market.

Fred Buck Comes Through With A Couple Of Photos Of Our Grandfather Captain Joe’s Boat The Benjamin C

When Mary Ann Anderson asked last week on these pages if anyone had any photos of her grandfather’s boat The Rosemarie, Fred Buck who works in The Photo department at The Cape Ann Historical Museum sent us a picture to post for her.

Fred wrote in the comment section letting folks know that he would help locate other photos of the Gloucester fleet so I asked if there were any of our Grandfather Captain Joe’s boat The Benjamin C.  Within hours Fred responded with not one but two.

There’s more than a few lessons here. 

  • Read the comment sections and participate in the GMG comment section under each post, You never know what golden nuggets get uncovered in there and it’s a part of what makes the GMG community special.
  • Cape Ann Historical Museum On Pleasant Street has a treasure trove of local artifacts, photos and information.
  • We have some excellent people who read GMG with a wide range of local interests and love to help. Example in this case- Fred Buck from The Cape Ann Museum.

Fred emailed me two photos, one of which was owned by the museum, it’s a 1951 photo taken by Philip Reisman.

Beeman Students Plant Dune Grass

Over 100 students worked to plant over 7000 strands of grass to repair the damaged and depleted dunes.

With much debate happening around the city about just what to do with Gloucester’s waterfront, it might be refreshing for some to know that local youth are learning about the importance of caring for our coastline well before they reach the age that they have to make such decisions.

Students and teachers from Beeman Elementary School’s fourth- and fifth-grade classes recently combined with the Gloucester Conservation Commission and Gorton’s Seafood to plant dune grass in the dunes of Good Harbor Beach. The GCC reported that 7,500 culms of American Beach Grass were planted by volunteers from the school and Gorton’s last week, with Gorton’s footing the bill for the dune grass and sending 40 or so volunteers to help the students out.

The project is part of an effort by the school to teach students about the importance of a healthy coastline in a community that is surrounded by the ocean. It is a natural follow up to a similar school project held in 2010, which was funded by a grant from MIT and worked in conjunction with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“It’s something we call ‘Living Blue,’” explains Beeman principal Ellen Sibley. “It focuses on the added responsibility of a coastal community to live green because we are the gatekeepers of the ocean.”

Katherine Faherty Fundraiser At Jalapeños on April 11

I was wondering if you would be willing to post my fundraising event on Good Morning Gloucester.  I am currently training to run the San Diego Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon through Team in Training.  Team in Training the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s largest fundraising effort.  I have pledged to raise $3000 for them while I train for the marathon on June 5, 2011.

I decided to get involved with Team in Training because I work for a national cancer research group and have met many people who have dedicated their lives to finding cures for cancer.  This program is a great opportunity for me to do more for cancer research.  Through my work, I have met two Lymphoma survivors who both participated in Team in Training.  One has run 14 marathons and the other completed a century ride.  I also have two teammates who I am training with who are both celebrating 10 years of remission.  These are the people who are motivating me to train and raise money for LLS. 

My fundraising event is at Jalapeños on April 11.  They will be donating 10% of the night’s profits (dinner and drinks) to LLS.  I will also have great door prizes and a Red Sox Ticket Raffle.

North Shore United Way Match Madness At Lat 43 Wednesday April 13th

We just doubled our impact for 13,000 North Shore children.  We hope you will consider joining us.  The North Shore United Way will be doubling all donations received by April 30th thanks to generous community supporters that have created a significant matching pool to close out this year’s annual campaign. We are within $100,000 of our goal.
We are calling this final push “Match Madness” and the focus this year is on North Shore United Way grants directly to programs that benefit local kids. As volunteers, we hear stories about how NSUW impacts local young lives every day—from providing access to healthy food for children in a low-income child care center, to supporting pre-teens and adolescents in six local middle and high schools around issues of bullying, substance abuse prevention and other challenges to their success.
These programs have a proven track record, but they are deeply dependent on us for their continuing success.

David Brooks Is Back From Costa Rica

Hi Everyone,

As most of you know I’m back from my trip to Costa Rica, I can’t tell you how lucky I feel to have been able to be a part of this trip. What an eye opener! We helped to renovate the elementary school and worked on fixing up and building two basketball courts. It was amazing at the appreciation we were shown by the young kids of the town. They were always smiling and wanting to help us with the projects. I’ll admit we pulled a Huck Fin a few times and made it look a lot more fun than it was… It was great to see you people taking care of their own facilities. I was amazed at the group of volunteers I worked side by side with. Weather they were on their spring break from college or taking a vacation form their Corporate America life they all had such an amazing heart to share with the community in Puerto Viejo. I was excited to work side be side with each and every one of them. Although it wasn’t till after the group had left that I truly realized how big and impact our projects had. I witnessed larger groups of kids elementary-high school anxious to play some basket ball on their new court. I also found out that the school was pulling double duty and teaching kids from 9-1 and they again from 1-5 every day the school was too small to hold all the kids wanting to learn all at once. I was given a tour by one of the 10 year old by named Tyler who first showed me where every relative in the town worked including his father who was a bus driver, then he gave me a tour of his neighborhood. The level of poverty was indescribable. He told me about how he is considered to be part of one of the wealthier families because his family all have jobs. He spoke english very well as his aunt who he lives with is from Colorado. I let him use my camera and he took some amazing pictures. You should have seen his face light up whenever he took a picture. He kept running up to me to show me every picture he took. It was amazing to have been able to share a few moments with him in my short time in Puerto Viejo.

The last day I was there I was at the bus station buying my ticket mid morning and a woman who I thought was standing in line kept looking at me, in addition to being pregnant she had two small children one in her arms and the other by her side. She looked as if she had been standing there all morning. I asked if she was in line. She said no, fumbled on her words a bit and in broken english said “a few coin to feed them” I saw her get teary eyed and as she tried holding back tears she spoke. I felt my heart turn inside out and immediately pulled out the left over Collones I had in my wallet despite budgeting out the rest of my trip so I didn’t have to exchange my money again. she kept on crying and through her sobs I heard a nearly inaudible thank you. I saw her walk with her children in her arms straight to nearest store as if there was not time to waste. This was so moving to me. It made me realize how lucky we are to have friends who we can turn to when we are in need. People who care for us, a community that cares for us. I want to thank all of you for being a part of this trip and I feel that through your support I was able to be a part of helping the people of Puerto Viejo. I hope you will enjoy the photos from my time there. Dory Report From Laurel Tarantino

Hello Joey,

It’s me again, Jimmy T’.s Secretary and I’m not sitting in his lap!  We got the Practice dories painted up and ready for the next step, which is "Launch Day" Saturday, April 2nd.  Hopefully that will go as smoothly as everything else has gone.  We couldn’t have done it without our much appreciated volunteers.  We’d love it if more folks would be so kind as to help out on launch day too.  Boats will leave on trailer from Eastern Avenue Storage @ 10:AM brought to the ramp in East Gloucester behind Martinetti Dentist for launching, from there, they will be rowed to their Summer Home at St. Peter’s Square Dock.  We need trailers, rowers, and folks to taxi rowers back to their vehicles.  Last year things went great and we were done in well under two hours.  Seeing the boats back in Harbor Cove will be a welcome sight, like Spring bulbs pushing up through the ground are now.  It won’t be long!

Thanks so very much once again Joey, for your precious time and wonderful exposure.

GLOUCESTER UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH COMMUNITY RECOGNITION AWARDS: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Here’s a photo I just so happened to have taken from the roof of the Coast Guard Station yesterday of the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church steeple.

The Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church is inviting nominations from the public for its 2011 Community Recognition Awards. The church seeks to recognize up to 10 individuals for the contributions they make to their community – people who do what they do without thought of any remuneration or recognition.

The men and women who receive these honors will come from all walks of life. Some are known for simple deeds they do for their neighbors; others are honored for giving generously to the entire community. All have made a mark on Gloucester and will be chosen because their actions embody the best of the spirit that guides Unitarian Universalism: open-hearted giving to others, solely for what those gifts mean, for no pay, and often with little or no public notice. There are no age limits.

Nominations are due no later than Friday, April 15. They must be in writing and include the name of the nominee, why this person should be honored, and the name and phone number of the person making the nomination. They should be sent to the Gloucester UU Church, 10 Church St. , Gloucester MA 01930 , or emailed to gloucesteruu@earthlink.net.

Final choices will be made by the church’s Social Justice Committee. The awards will be made at a public event at the church on Friday, May 20.

Dory Prep Day- Under 32 Degrees But These Great Community Folks Got ‘Er Done!

The Dorys don’t just maintain themselves.  It takes a group effort to keep these boats in racing shape.  The email was sent out last week to all the members of the International Dory Race organization and I’m sure when they sent out the invitation to join in and sand, powerwash and paint the dorys that no one imagined that it was going to be under 32 degrees at the end of March. But that’s what mother nature dealt.

I remember that morning wondering if they were going to cancel and reschedule but as you can see from the following photos- the work took place.  Those who showed up should be applauded for their efforts! Photos and captions from Laurel Tarantino-

We only got the bottoms painted on Saturday, as the temperatures were too low for anything other than that.  Boats are all sanded and ready for “Dory Buff” which we hope to slap on tomorrow.  Hopefully we’ll get it done, because we want to launch them asap.

Once again we were pleasantly surprised by the strong showing on Boat Prep Day. Unfortunately, it was too damn cold to paint the boats! So…. we’re going to do that *tomorrow at 4 p.m.* Anyone who can spare an hour or two, we’ll be at the Eastern Avenue Storge facility from 4 to 6 p.m.. *Come on down and lend a hand.*
All the hard work got done, thanks to Erik Dombrowski and Damon Cummings bringing all the tools and supplies we got all the boats scraped, sanded and bottom painted.  Now all we have to do is slap a little paint/linseed oil on the decks and roll the buff on the outsides. Should have it done tomorrow and ready to launch this weekend!
