Dory Prep Day- Under 32 Degrees But These Great Community Folks Got ‘Er Done!

Thanks To Laurel and Jimmy T For Getting Us The Photos-

The Dorys don’t just maintain themselves.  It takes a group effort to keep these boats in racing shape.  The email was sent out last week to all the members of the International Dory Race organization and I’m sure when they sent out the invitation to join in and sand, powerwash and paint the dorys that no one imagined that it was going to be under 32 degrees at the end of March. But that’s what mother nature dealt.

I remember that morning wondering if they were going to cancel and reschedule but as you can see from the following photos- the work took place.  Those who showed up should be applauded for their efforts! Photos and captions from Laurel Tarantino-

Laurel added in a new email-

We only got the bottoms painted on Saturday, as the temperatures were too low for anything other than that.  Boats are all sanded and ready for “Dory Buff” which we hope to slap on tomorrow.  Hopefully we’ll get it done, because we want to launch them asap.

and another Report From Jimmy-

Once again we were pleasantly surprised by the strong showing on Boat Prep Day. Unfortunately, it was too damn cold to paint the boats! So…. we’re going to do that *tomorrow at 4 p.m.* Anyone who can spare an hour or two, we’ll be at the Eastern Avenue Storge facility from 4 to 6 p.m.. *Come on down and lend a hand.*
All the hard work got done, thanks to Erik Dombrowski and Damon Cummings bringing all the tools and supplies we got all the boats scraped, sanded and bottom painted.  Now all we have to do is slap a little paint/linseed oil on the decks and roll the buff on the outsides. Should have it done tomorrow and ready to launch this weekend!

Thank you all! Joe Novello, Kieth Pallazola, Marge Robertson, Laurel Tarantino, Patti Page, Leo LaRosa, Jeff Muise, Gina Lampassi, Nancy Dudley, Mike Harmon and Ray D’Amico. Forgive me if I left anyone out. All the elbow grease and good MoJo is appreciated.

Sailing thanks and pix

Bill Rothchild contacted GMG through our contact tab at the top of the page.  He asked about renting sailboats for his family.  A few emails later and Bill showed his family a great time thanks to the warm hospitality of the SailGHS Program.

Bill Rothchild writes-

Hey Joe:

We just got home and wanted to express once again our gratitude to you for setting us up with SailGHS! We met Patty and Hillary at Solomon Landing and they ferried us out to the boats, where we boarded a Rhodes 19 captained by Will, one of the program participants.
We sailed out past 10 Pound, then had a few drops of rain. It was great to get out on the waters of Gloucester Harbor! We had a great time- the ladies even supplied some snacks for us. Judging by the pictures we are sending, I think Hillary, Patty and Tracy (Will’s mom) also had a good time.
We come to Gloucester every year. It made us feel very good to have an opportunity to give back to Gloucester by supporting the sailing program. Hope everyone likes the pix and the best of luck to SailGHS, an important link
the sailing heritage of a historical city.

The Gloucester High School Sailing team is in its 5th season as a competitive racing team and a member of the Mass Bay League in Boston. We accept participants from Gloucester, Rockport and home schooled students ranging from 6th grade through high school. We have a learn to sail program and the racing team. There is no charge to the particpants of the program. In lieu of fees, SailGHS, the non-profit booster organization, raises funds to cover all expenses. That is the basis of this fund raising initiative. Our learn to sail boats, Rhodes 18, are used by both the GHS sailing program and the YMCA summer sailing. The Rhodes 18 sailboats and are need of sails. If we can raise $1000 we will be provided enough matching funds to purchase the sails. Any proceeds in excess of the $1000 will be put towards routine program expenses.

At this time for the purpose of fund raising, we are offering this one time adult experience. Please see attached flyer. If there is further interest, we may expand into an adult learn to sail program.

Thank you for your interest. By engaging in this worth while experience you will be providing support for a very unique, water dependent program.

Sailing is a lifestyle which lasts a lifetime.

YMCA Sailing Program

After all the talk this past week of wishing children had an opportunity to get on the water for a sailing program Damon Cummings wrote to tell me that there are already many programs in place to get local youth out on the water-

Here is a link to the High School and Middle School program run by Patti Page. It is during the school year, spring and fall, of course so the YMCA summer program is using the floats and boats for the summer (except that we took a bunch of Tall Ship sailors out sailing the afternoon before last):

Joe,
When you saw the City of Gloucester Youth Sailing Program Boston Whaler and a runabout leave the harbormaster’s pier this morning full of kids, they were on their way out to go sailing on the city owned Rhodes 18s and 19 and the Gloucester High school sailing team 420s. They went by us under sail a few minutes later. They go out every weekday except Friday. The program is run by the YMCA now since the city summer recreational program has been phased out. Here is a link to the program:

That is only one of the sailing and harbor related programs presently under way for kids in Gloucester. During the school year Patti Page runs a High school and Middle School program with the 420s and Rhodes. The students do not pay a cent and we take both beginners and champions. The program has a joint Gloucester and Rockport sailing team that competes against other high schools around the state. Kevin Cook is the coach and some funny old guy runs the races. Moreover the Heritage Center and the Lannon run a massive program for Gloucester students and the Gloucester Museaum school at Ram Island does as well. The International Dory Racing Committee has junior racers (some in Middle School) racing against Canada and the Heritage Center has an off and on youth program in the pilot gigs. It is my understanding that a Community Boating center is in the works and that is something we all have wanted for a long time.
Whatever you may have heard to the contrary, Gloucester offers a wealth of opportunities for youth who are not in private yacht clubs to get out on the water.
Here’s a picture of the kids leaving the Harbormaster’s float to head to the sailing program.
