Thanks to Big Mike’s Bike Shop and Beardman McBikeshaman (I believe that’s what he said his name was) I am back to terrorizing the potholed streets of our beloved burg. It should be noted that the bike was fixed within hours and it cost me less than buying the same parts on Amazon, and I would have had to spend time putting them all together and then bolting them onto the bike. And he oiled my brakes.
I think he might have also mentioned that he’d dipped the removable components into a vat containing active cultures of the deadly ebola virus. I was kinda distracted looking at all the cool bikes and parts they had in there, but I think he said that. Or that he’d rigged the bike with semtex plastic explosive and would detonate if tampered with. Or maybe they are having a sale on helmets. Something along those lines.
Anyhow, Big Mike’s did me solid. Thanks guys.

54th Annual Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar Thank You’s From Grace Giambanco Numerosi
The 54th Annual Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar was a success! Main Street was a hot, happening, fun filled place to be for three days!
I would like to personally thank Linda Palazola of Palazola’s Sporting Goods, Joe Ciolino of The Weathervane and Christine Orlando of Kids’ Unlimited for their continued dedication to the Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar.
I can assure you that without the commitment of these folks the Sidewalk Bazaar would not have happen and we would have lost a Gloucester Tradition. I feel honored to have been part of the event for the last two years.
The summer is always a busy time for everyone, and we would not have been able to have such a great event if it wasn’t for the commitment of this amazing community. Gloucester should be proud.
I’d like to thank Mayor Carolyn Kirk and especially Jim Duggan who was always willing to help address any concerns, City Clerk, Linda Lowe who guided me through the new permitting process, Mark Cole and Rose LoPiccolo of the DPW- street closing and trash are always hot topics, Food Inspector Rosalie Nicastro, Deputy Chief Steve Aiello of the Gloucester Fire Department and Lieutenant Joseph Aiello of the Gloucester Police Department both are a pleasure to work with, and of course our financial sponsors: Howard Frisch, of Horvitz & Frisch, p.c., Bank Gloucester,

Some of my best memories were listening to Satch Kerans as lead singer of The Catalinas at The Kaloust house for our 3rd of July Bash’s we used to have.

The cool spray of the fire hose soaked youngsters in the noon sun at the annual Fireman’s Muster, one of the hottest events of summer at Endicott Park.
Hundreds of kids from the town’s playgrounds and recreation programs descended on the park’s wide, green fields for a day of old-fashioned firefighting fun.
“We’re going to get, in the end, soaking, soaking wet,” said 10-year-old Isabel, dripping wet in a bright yellow T-shirt with “Sunshine Club” printed on the back.
The finale featured kids and counselors frolicking in a giant pile of sudsy fire foam, the ’50s hit “Splish Splash” blaring over the public address system.
“You look good in a beard,” said Tereza, 12, giggling as she lathered up the face of Chris Roy, director of Project Sunshine.
“You think so?” said Roy, breaking into a smile.
Project Sunshine, a free summer recreation program for homeless kids living in Danvers hotels, has become it’s own shining star. Over the past two summers, the program has received a statewide honor, attracted nearly $40,000 in private funding, and won the hearts and hands of volunteers from Danvers to Marblehead to Brockton.
“It’s a communitywide effort, with a tremendous outpouring of volunteerism,” said Town Manager Wayne Marquis. “I think people feel proud that their town cares enough to reach out to our residents who are in need. You can count me in that group.”

Grand Opening of The Hive
Art Haven held the grand opening of it’s community center, The Hive, on Saturday, July 28th. There was a good turn-out with a lot of local artists and familiar faces from Gloucester’s cultural community – plus, delicious food from Giuseppe’s! They have done a great job preparing this space.
“Cape Ann Art Haven is a community space where artists of all ages and abilities are encouraged to develop creativity and confidence through hands on learning and collaboration.”

A golf tournament will be held in the honor and remembrance of two great, respected individuals. Both Aran and Ryan Patrican passed on far too early in their lives, although their spirits will forever be with us all.
The golf tournament shall be a shotgun start, with a scramble format. It is expected that each group have one principal representative, responsible for payment, and coordinating the group. The $125.00 payment (per player) will include a full round of golf (18 holes), golf cart, and a full hot lunch. One should expect raffles, prizes, and plenty of laughs.
A generous amount of the group fee will be placed in the Thomas Patrican Educational Fund. Please respond as timely as possible, as half the group spots have already been filled.
The winning team with the lowest score card will have their names eternally etched upon the Patrican Memorial Cup, and they shall house the trophy until the following years event.

I would like to extend a personal note of thanks to each and every person who came to my weekly
Rhumb Line performance last week. It was an overwhelming show of support from a loving community
that is utterly precious to me in every possible way. Larry Hoppen was my bandmate, dear friend of more
than 32 years and, of course, singer of the Orleans mega-hits “Dance With Me”, “Still The One” & “Love
Takes Time”. But he was more than just that. He was the proud father of two beautiful, intelligent and
uniquely talented teenaged daughters, and a devoted humanitarian on a global scale. Larry left the
planet on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 24, and I have been literally reeling ever since. But, I am not
alone. Not with you here by my side. I love you all. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ~ Fly

Inner City Boys and Girls Club Kids Scuba Dive at Stage Fort Park
Hi Joey,
My name is Cassie French and I work for the Boys and Girls Club of Boston. This past weekend, (July 22nd) the Jordan Club of Chelsea went scuba diving for the first time at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester. We have 7 kids from the Jordan Boys and Girls Club in Chelsea participating in this program. This as an unique opportunity for urban children to have the chance to learn to scuba dive.

The Block Parties and The Middle Street Walk are right up there with what I think are the best family fun times for our City. There is a tremendous amount of energy spent putting these things together and the people that work behind the scenes so you can go down and enjoy all the free entertainment and safe fun atmosphere are many.

Lucinda Seigel – Volunteer Coordinator and Advisor: Lucinda has a vast international business experience. Because of this Interpol is offering a reward for her. She loves danger and is frequently under cover, so if you see her ignore her. Lucinda carries a gun, enjoys cannibalism and catatonic states. Don’t waste your time trying to figure her out.
Will Hunt – Technical Director Will makes the Block Party music materialize. A master musician he’s learning the bagpipes but is off kilter. Will spends much of his time decomposing. Although making people leery with his incessant cheerfulness and sunny disposition, Will wears blame proudly. He has almost no self-control.

2012 Reid’s Ride Photos From Tina Ketchopolos
Joey: Here are some photos from Reid’s Ride in memory of Reid Sacco that took place yesterday from Lynnfield ending at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester.
Reid’s parents Gene and Lorraine Sacco of Lynnfield began this event in memory of their son Reid R. Sacco. They are an incredible parents with lots of support from wonderful family members and friends.
The ride is a 28-mile Bike-a-thon , a fun and rewarding way to support clinical and scientific research into finding more treatments — and someday a cure — for the cancers that predominantly strike adolescents and young adults. Cyclists of all ages and abilities pedal their way from Lynnfield to Cape Ann in what is the primary fund-raising event for the Reid Sacco Memorial Foundation. The event registration fees, sponsorships and donations benefit the Reid Sacco Memorial Cancer Research Fund, and this fund supports clinical and research programs in the area of young adult cancers. The Foundation’s mission is to improve the outlook for this population of cancer patients, a population that has been tragically underserved by recent advances in cancer treatment.
Sacco was born July 24, 1984, which is intentionally close to the ride date. Sacco’s goal was to ride in a bike-a-thon to prevent young adult cancer, but cancer took his life before he achieved that desire. He died June 16, 2005 at the age of 20. Reid was enrolled at Columbia University to study Chemical Engineering
In late June 2012, the Reid R. Sacco AYA Program at Tufts Medical Center was announced – the program includes the establishment this summer of the Reid R. Sacco Adolescent & Young Adults Clinic for Cancer and Blood Diseases, as well as the establishment of the Reid R. Sacco AYA Fund to support educational initiatives at Tufts. This extraordinary achievement was made possible by your participation in Reid’s Ride over the years.
This year’s Reid Rice raised over $100,000. with donations still coming in!

WARM WEATHER ALERT FOR ELDER RESIDENTS
The Rockport Police Department and the Rockport Council On Aging are asking residents to check in on their elderly family members, friends, and neighbors throughout the warm summer months.
Residents should pay extra attention to homes that are exceptionally hot and to warning signs of dehydration, heat stroke and exhaustion, which includes lack of energy, nausea and high body temperature.
The Rockport Council On Aging will also be welcoming seniors to the town’s air-conditioned Senior Center in the Community House at 58 Broadway.
Any resident concerned about an elder may contact the police at 978-546-1212 or the Council on Aging at 978-546-2573.

Inaugural Patrican Memorial Golf Tournament on August 3
Hi Joe,
On the heels of the very successful Aran Patrican Friendship Hockey Skate that raised over $2600 for the Thomas Patrican Scholarship fund, I have teamed up with the same group of Aran’s close friends to hold the inaugural Patrican Memorial Golf Tournament on August 3, beginning at 7:40 a.m. at Cape Ann Golf Course in Essex. Aran, a new father to son Thomas — who was just one year old when Aran was suddenly and tragically taken from us due to a heart infection this past January — served as one of Gloucester’s finest police officers for 18 years. Aran was a student of the human condition and, as a decorated officer, served the best interests of his fellow citizens by maintaining fierce vigilance with the level of care, justice, and sense of humor required for such an important role in our society.
The 18-hole, shot-gun start, tournament will be played by teams of four (foursomes) in a scramble format with the winner taking home a replica trophy of the NHL’s Stanley Cup, engraved with the names of each champion. The champions will stay in possession of the trophy until the following year’s tournament. Aran was predeceased by his brother Ryan in 1991 who died just six months after his mother, Pauline (Blackburn) Patrican succumbed to cancer. Aran and Ryan’s aunt and uncle, Bernadette and Peter Blackburn of England, have donated the trophy to show their support of all the good that is now taking place to help raise money for Aran’s son, and Pauline’s only grandchild, Thomas.
The entry fee for the Patrican Memorial Golf Tournament is $125 per player ($500 per foursome) and must be paid in full by July 23. Please remit checks payable to the Thomas Patrican Education Fund.

Mary Bowles Has Some Nice Things To Say
Hi Joey,
My husband and I have been Gloucester residents now for almost 2.5 years and I can’t say enough not only how much we love it here for all the obvious reasons but also how thoughtful, unselfish and helpful people are. Just this past Tuesday I had yet another great experience of generosity. I’m a mosaic artist and I realized the mirror part of a mosaic mirror I needed to bring to the cape that very night for a customer was scratched. So I ran up to Banner Glass on Pond Road and the woman there said unfortunately there was no one there to cut a piece of mirror for me. But she’s thoughtful enough to recommended another glass merchant in town, Al’s Glass on Main Street. I run down there and meet Al who couldn’t have been nicer. So I got to meet someone who’s had a Gloucester business for 47 years and chat with him which was the best thing. Then he takes time to find just the right mirror which he cuts and in the end won’t take any money for it!
And I had a similar experience at The Building Center a couple of months ago when I needed a piece of plywood and they cut it right away and said "no charge". And of course many many other wonderful people like EJ for example who has taken the time to give me much encouragement and guidance as a new artist in town.
All these people are role models and I will do my best to "pay it forward".
