Rhumb Line Monday Night Jam 18th Anniversary Celebration feat. Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski of Trey Anastasio Band

Every once in a while you just have to step back, take a breath and marvel at the fact that you can go out on a Monday night and see some of the world’s best musicians jam in an intimate venue right down the street from where you live.  And it’ FREE!  Check out this note from Dan King about tonight’s very special Rhumb Line Jam:

Tonight is the 18th Anniversary of The Rhumb Line Monday Night Jam Celebration. The Jam has seen many ups and downs, countless players and attendants and many hosts holding down the fort over the years. Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski, two obvious jam masters being in the Trey Anastasio Band, are joining in to help us celebrate. It’s a closed Jam with a schedule of former and current musicians who’ve kept it alive, making for an amazing night of mayhem. Early Start at 8:30pm by Bandit Kings to get it rolling since they’re the current caretakers. Thanks for making my little idea such a big piece of Cape Ann Music.

Here’s an example of the kind of jam that gets going when all these folks get together.

Another reason to be glad you live in Gloucester!

Last night’s show at The Harbor Loop Concert featuring The A-Train Orchestra and Johnny Carwash 8.15.2013

Local stars going over the bridge to Beverly this fall

MardiGrasCrowdThere’s a hidden gem down the road in Beverly: The Larcom Theatre.  Opened in 1912 (the same year as Fenway Park) featuring Vaudeville shows, The Larcom’s initial advertising boasted, “Lit Completely by Electricity.”  Fully restored in 1985, the Larcom Theatre  became a second home to Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Company, which closed in May 2012.

In April 2013, Vickie and I presented Henri Smith at the Larcom Theatre to a sold-out crowd, many of whom had never before set foot in the theatre.  We fell in love with the Larcom the minute we walked in, checked the acoustics and told one of the owners (David Bull, star of Le Grand David) that we’d like to present lots of concerts in this acoustically magical theatre…

So, we begin with a 2013 Fall Music Series featuring Gloucester legend Allen Estes and his new Band on October 5 with Dave Foley’s Fabulous Mustangs opening, The Slide Brothers on November 2 with Gloucester’s Michael Thomas Doyle opening, and A New Orleans Christmas with Henri Smith on December 14.  We’re working on another six shows for late winter and spring of 2014 and will announce them in the not-too-distant future.

These shows will sell out quickly, so we’re giving FOBs first crack the best seats.  Here’s where you can get tickets:
ALLEN ESTES
SLIDE BROTHERS
HENRI SMITH CHRISTMAS

The last time Allen Estes performed with a full band they nearly sold out the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford, which has more than twice as many seats.

The Slide Brothers are the greatest living musicians who embody the Sacred Steel tradition. The joyous music these legendary artists create extends far beyond scared steel to encompass blues, rock and soul all celebrated with a sound that is uniquely their own.  This is their only New England show this year.

Henri Smith sold out the Larcom in April.  Plus he sold out the 2012 Mardi Gras show in Gloucester and was the headliner for the 1000+ Celebrate Gloucester crowd in 2010.

I know it seems like you’ve got lots of time, but don’t wait to get good seats to these shows in one of the most beautiful, acoustically perfect venues north of Boston.

A Beautiful Night ~ Start the weekend by walking to live music @ 6 downtown venues

Start at Captain Carlos with Cripple Cove Quartet at 5.  Walk out the door to catch Alek Razdan & A-Train at Harbor Loop at 6:30, followed by Johnny Carwash.  Then you can walk to Rhumb Line to see Punk legend, Wille Loco, with Dave Sag.

Yes, I said walk.  It’s not that far.  If you’re not from Gloucester check out Google’s Walking Directions (still in beta, but they work well).  Here are Google’s directions for the 13 minute walk from Harbor Loop to Rhumbline.  And it’s a nice walk — especially on a night like tonight.

While they’re on break you can walk down to the Dog Bar, Brew Pub and Minglewood.  No cover for any of these shows tonight, so start the weekened NOW!

Trouble deciding where to go?  See the full live music schedule here.

Blazing his saddles will be that cosmic gas-giant, Mr. Billy Loosigian , who’s been in more fabulous Boston Bands than you can imagine. Presently in Willie’s band, this guy plays like he has four hands and 24 fingers.
Rounding out the heavy lifting will be our favorite tonsorially-challenged drumambulist, Mr. Steevie Chaggaris ,keeper of the flame and general mucky muck. A great nite! We hit at 8:30  and play till exhaustion. Somebody help me!

Reggae Weekend ~ Mile Marker One Presents ~ Inner Visions ~ World Class Reggae Band from US Virgin Islands

innervision

Innervisions has been playing Castle Hill in Ipswich the last few years but the crowds became too large for them to handle so we’re hosting them over two nights at Cape Ann Marina Mile Marker One. Friday August 16th and Saturday August 17th On Friday the 16th we have an Opening act from Newburyport called Freevolt.

Doors are at 7pm. 15$ at the door. Cape Ann Marina 77 Essex Ave. Gloucester Ma Mile Marker One 978 283-2122

We also have Free Shows on our Bridge Deck All weekend with Jah N I on Friday 8/16 and The Glostafarians on Saturday 8/17 plus The Runaround Sunday 8/18 at 5pm.

1. When was Inner Visions formed? The band is dated back to when Phillip “Grasshopper” Pickering returned from the military in 1979 and joined “Prophecy” Reggae Band. Over the years the band saw a name change and has continued on since that time as Inner Visions.

2. What is the history of the band? Inner Visions has been the around since the golden days of reggae when the likes of Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Dennis Brown, Toots and the Maytals, Peter Tosh, Third World, Steel Pulse, Inner Circle, Aswad and so many other foundation Artists presented the world with a music that would not be denied. Because the Virgin Islands dominant music art form was Calypso and now is Soca music, (and the fact that St. John was so far removed from the limelight), it was not until 1995 that the band started getting some recognition when we released our first official recording. Since then the music has taken us through the Caribbean, to Cancun Mexico, Europe and all over the USA. We now boast six self produced recordings to our credit.

3. Who are the current members of the group? Current members are Alvin “Jupiter” Pickering (Bass/Background Vocals), Phillip “Grasshopper” Pickering (Guitars/Percussions/Lead Vocals), Akiba “Mr. Snooze” Pickering (Keyboards/ Lead and Background Vocals), and Aswad “Hollywood” aka “Black Lion” (Drums). Just incase you are wondering about those Pickering last names, “Jupiter” and “Grasshopper” are brothers and “Mr. Snooze” and “Black Lion” are the son’s of “Grasshopper!”

4. Who are your Musical influences? Wow, there are so many to mention! I think the group Culture for the energy, Third World for the message of love, Aswad for the party style grooves, Steel Pulse for the consciousness, Bob Marley for the universal strength, and many, many more!

5. What keeps you coming back to New England? The awesome love we feel from our fans many of which we have had the opportunity to greet on our Island home long before performing stateside.

6. What is your connection to Gloucester? Joe Loiacano (Manager at Mile Marker 1) had known of us as he had lived and managed a venue on St. John a few years back. We had played Gloucester before at the Rhumb Line, but after hearing about the crowds we were packing in at the Castle on Crane Beach’s Summer Concert Series, he decided to have us. It was such a great success last year, he up-scaled it for this year’s performance.

7. What is Island life like on St. John? It is a rewarding way of life as one might expect but the drawback is it is very expensive to live there. We boast some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and some of the most wonderful people but like everywhere these days things are tough all around. Still we would not trade it for the whole wide world!

Stormy weather blues cured by music tonight and over the wekend

Live music starts at 6 tonight, 11 AM tomorrow & Sunday.  You can’t get to every show so here’s the schedule to help you choose.

Tonight you can catch an unusual lineup of top musical talent in one intimate venue that you don’t see every day: Allen Estes has been quietly assembling a band of all-stars,  including the great David Brown, Dave Mattacks and Wolf Ginandes to plug in and rock.   Wait, you might say.  Isn’t Allen Estes, folk, country or americana?  Sometimes.  But when he’s with these guys and their plugged in they ROCK!  And that’s precisely what they’ll do at Minglewood Tavern tonight starting about 9.  Check them out!

Tomorrow, start off at the Blues Fest (weather will clear by morning).  Then take the party to town at any of a dozen venues at night (see here).  Get up Sunday by 11 and check out the Rockport Acoustic Music Fest.

Saturday, September 21, 8 PM Presented by M.E. Productions SAVOY BROWN- UNPLUGGED featuring KIM SIMMONDS

Legendary…a blues/rock institution…true innovators. These are just a few of the ways Savoy Brown has been described over the past 40 years by music critics and fans. One of the earliest of British blues bands, Savoy Brown, with founder guitarist Kim Simmonds at the helm, helped launch the 1967 UK blues boom movement that brought blues music back to the USA invigorating the style forever. In the process, the band became part of the framework that launched the rock and roll music of the 1970’s. Their influence now stretches into modern rock as we know it today. From London’s Soho night clubs in 1966 to headlining the world’s most famous venues (Carnegie Hall, Fillmore’s East, and West, Cobo Hall, etc.), Savoy Brown has done it all and as the band continues to tour worldwide they give a glimpse into the past and also inspire new listeners with their personal brand of rocking boogie, blues, and rock.

The band will play a special ‘bare essentials’ unplugged show, tailored for the intimate setting of the Shalin Liu Performance Center. For any Savoy Brown fan, this is a unique opportunity to see a one of a kind show with special material!

2nd Annual Rockport Music Jazz Festival August 14 – 18

JazzFestival2013Lg

Rockport Music presents its 2nd Annual Rockport Music Jazz Festival August 14 through 18.  The Jazz Festival offers something for all jazz lovers—including the astounding jazz interpretations of Grammy Award-winning vocalist Kurt Elling, the warm vocal timbre of Roberta Gambarini, the 1950s vocal jazz of the Four Freshmen, the African-inspired jazz of violinist Regina Carter, and culminating with three-time Grammy Award winning jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis.  New this year for the Jazz Festival—Jazz Chats! The Jazz Chats are informal gatherings starting at 7 pm for concert attendees to delve deeper into the subject of jazz—its beginnings, its growth, and its future with such jazz leaders as Eric Jackson, Steve Schwartz, Rich Tennant, and Ron Della Chiesa.  Additionally, several of the Jazz Festival artists have agreed to join the Jazz Chats for their concerts, including the Four Freshmen, Kurt Elling, and Branford Marsalis!

The Jazz Festival opens with Roberta Gambarini on Wednesday, August 14, at 8 pm, whose warm vocal timbre and impeccable timing earned her a Grammy nomination for her album Easy to Love.  Selected as DownBeat Magazine’s 2009 Rising Star Female Vocalist of the Year and the Jazz Journalists Associations’ Female Jazz Singer of the Year, Gambarini has performed with such jazz greats as Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, and Christian McBride.    The Boston Globe hails her as, “a true successor to Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Carmen McRae.”   Tickets: $31-$52

Performing on Thursday, August 15, at 8 pm, the Four Freshmen dominated the airwaves in the 1950s and influenced major groups like The Beach Boys. Open-harmonic jazz arrangements blended with a classic big band sound have earned the group six Grammy nominations and a place in the Vocal Hall of Fame. Enjoy pop tunes and jazz standards from the Great American Songbook.  The Wall Street Journal hails them as, “an ultra-talented quartet of vocalists.”  Tickets: $31-$52

Grammy Award winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling performs on Friday, August 16, at 8 pm.  With a perfected four octave range, astonishing technical mastery, and a knack for storytelling, Elling is among the world’s foremost jazz vocalists. Every one of his ten albums has been nominated for a Grammy, and, year after year, he has won DownBeat’s Critics Poll and the Jazz Journalists Association’s “Male Singer of the Year.” Enjoy unique interpretations of songs by The Beatles, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, and more from his latest album 1916 Broadway—The Brill Building Project.  “In an era when bona fide jazz singers are in perilously short supply…Elling seems hellbent on rewriting the definition of what jazz singing is all about.”  Chicago Tribune  Tickets: $39-$58

Pre-eminent jazz violinist Regina Carter returns to Rockport Music on Saturday, August 17, at 8 pm, to showcase her album Reverse Thread, traditional African folk music brilliantly fused with the expressive contemporary twist for which she’s known. Lauded as one of the finest violinists of her generation, Carter tours around the world and has performed with artists as diverse as Aretha Franklin, Lauryn Hill, Billy Joel, and Mary J. Blige.    Tickets: $45-$65

On Sunday, August 18, at 5 pm, renowned Grammy® Award-winning saxophonist and Tony Award® nominee Branford Marsalis and with longtime pianist Joey Calderazzo perform at Rockport Music.  Their spectacular duo collaboration Songs of Mirth and Melancholy reveal an ever deepening musical relationship and provide the listener with a glimpse into their musical journey.  Saxophonist Branford Marsalis consorts with Joey Calderazzo… for a session that is surprisingly sublime. Marsalis and Calderazzo sound classical in the best jazz sense: handsome melodies creating beauty and lots of free space for interaction.”  Philadelphia Inquirer  Tickets: SOLD OUT

Dave says,

It’s time to give me your huddled masses and exotic diseases and await the haloed return of Mr. Dennis Brennan, ubermensch of the blues. As the grapevine was strangling me, it’s become apparent that the place to be Tuesday nite is at the Doggy Bar. Rheumer has it that The Funda- mentals* are ripe for seed pod explosion and are waiting to spray you with their own brand of cosmic debris. I’ll be there with a whisk broom. You should go.

Also, buy yourselph  a folding chair and limp on down to Stage Fork Parque this Saturday. Sit down and don’t get up till it’s over. The 2nd annual Glou. Blooze Fest, that is. 11to 7, still gives you time to wipe yourself off and go bar hopping later. I’ll see you there.

And here’s some more goodies for you this month. It’s the best batch yet:
Aug. 15 Willie Alexander and some boom booms. Boomba boom!
Aug.22 Lydia Warren and Chris “Stovepipe” Brown. Breathing optional.
