From Dave Sag on the Rhumb Line’s Thursday Night Blues Party

“Big fun this thursday at the Rumline as we drag in Ms. Lisa Marie kicking and screaming thru 3 more unbelievable sets. Egging her on will be Benny the B Benson on drumps and high dudgeon, and Our old pal, Henley Douglas Jr., the inventor of the shirt , on saxamaphonium. Of course, Greg T. and his hat will be there, as well as myself. I just finished fixing my uprite, so I’ll be flailing away on that for a change…
And , if you still got the strength, Friday at Elliot’s  presents the GEEZERZ, once again: that is Dave Brown, Greg T. and myself, as well as Jim Gwin, Keith Lockhart’s favorite drummmnist on what else but…drumms!”

Gloucester bandstand concert pays tribute to Herb Pomeroy on Aug. 9

From the Beacon

HP3The 2009 Summer Concert Series at the Antonio Gentile Bandstand in Stage Fort Park in Gloucester continues Sunday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. with The Herb Pomeroy Tribute Concert, featuring Donna Byrne and the Herb Pomeroy Band with Greg Hopkins. The concert includes tunes from the songbook they used for many years.

This is the first time the band has played together since the bandstand concert at Stage Fort Park in August 2007, the weekend after Pomeroy’s death.

“Longtime Herb Pomeroy collaborator Donna Byrne was greatly affected by Herb’s death and she decided to retire soon after his passing,” said concert organizer David Benjamin. “Aug. 9 will be Byrne’s first public performance in quite a while and the first that Herb’s band has played together since 2007.”

The musicians are donating their fees to the Herb Pomeroy Scholarship Fund at Berklee College of Music.

From Dave Sag on the Rhumb Line’s Thursday Night Blues Party

“Got a special show for y’all this week as I drag my dearest friend, John Rankin, out of the slickery swamp of Louisiana and wring  him dry on  Fred’s font of perpetual resurrection: the Rhumb Line. Educator, performer, vocalist, citizen, weekend father, this guy can do it all, and at the same time, too. He’ll be digging deep into that good ol’  Nawlins pile of steaming R&B, and throwin’ in a coupla originals to boot. You gotta hear this.

Behind him, pushing the beat will be our old buddy, Forrest “gump” Padgett on heart attack drums, Paul  Ahlstrand on tenor twelve sax, and yers trooly on base. C’mon down and tell John how much you like my punctuation!”

From Dave Sag on the Rhumb Line’s Thursday Night Blues Party

“Big fun this week as Justin Quinn returns for a nite of Chicago-style blues. Justin is a fine harpist and vocalist and has great cowboy boots. He’ll be burnin’ his leather on  the floor with the likes of Jon Ross, formerly Duke Robillard’s bassist, now on guitar; got that old sound goin’…. and Per Hanson, James Cotton’s drummer on…guess….drums! Greg and I will be there too, meddling and obfuscating our way thru the furrows of the blues.

This is a great unit….some of you may have purchased a CD last time around. Bring some cash and buy another one  this time , you won’t be disappointed!

Again, I lost a lot of my fan files, so if you know someone who wants in, send ’em to me!”

KBGM Release Party Reminder

Singer/songwriter Dan King will perform with David Brown, Dave Mattacks, and Wolf Ginandes for their Boston CD release party at Atwoods Tavern in Cambridge on Thursday, July 30 and in Gloucester at Elliotts at the Blackburn on Friday, July 31. The band, also known as KBMG, will play in support of their latest studio album, Western Color. KBMG played most recently to a fantastic audience at the Berklee Performance Center and are pleased to be back in Boston.

Their first combined full-length studio effort, Western Color, overflows with wasted love, light, rumors, and castaways—a ragged journey of sound and story combining folk, rock, and roots influences.

A highly anticipated album, Western Color evokes the tangled landscape of northern New England’s rugged working class, crashing waves and ultra violet sunsets; and is the culmination of efforts from some of the best artists in the area.

CD’s will be available for purchase. Featuring new hits, Goodnight Romeo, When it Comes Down to Love, Raggedy and more!

Visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud7NoYKz_9A for the Goodnight Romeo video

Thanks and see you soon!

Local Musicians CD release party in Cambridge

Dan King etc oval2
KBMG at the Berklee Preformance Center

BOSTON, MA: Singer/songwriter Dan King will perform with David Brown, Dave Mattacks, and Wolf Ginandes for their Boston CD release party at Atwoods Tavern in Cambridge on Thursday, July 30.

A highly anticipated album, Western Color evokes the tangled landscape of northern New England’s rugged working class, crashing waves and ultra violet sunsets; and is the culmination of efforts from some of the best artists in the area

Guitarist David Brown is resident of Gloucester, Mass. and is a guitar legend, known for his work with Billy Joel, Dr. John, and Simon and Garfunkel. Brown’s Dobro and electric guitar are staples of the album and each note serves the gravelly no-frills roots-rock vibe of Western Color.

Wolf Ginandes lives in Framingham, Mass. and is a bass veteran known around the Berklee campus, Boston, and beyond. Among others, he’s played with GE Smith and The Mohegan Sun All-Stars, and his purposeful sound and obvious joy are heard throughout the album.

Drummer Dave Mattacks started performing with big bands in the UK before he joined the influential folk/rock group Fairport Convention. In 2000, Mattacks emigrated to Boston, where he continues to enjoy a full career as both a musician and a producer, spanning live and studio work. Mattacks’s discography includes five CDs with Paul McCartney and various albums and tours with—among many others—Nick Drake, Brian Eno, Jethro Tull, Elton John, Jimmy Page, Cat Stevens, XTC, and Loudon Wainwright.

An accomplished musician, King has played all over New England and both coasts. Highlights include the Indie Music awards at the famous Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, along side Luke Temple at Arlene’s Grocery and the Knitting Factory in New York City as well as being in Whoopi Goldberg’s birthday Band jamming with Whoopi and Robin Williams at The Cutting Room also in NYC.  He sites the moment Whoopi introduced him to Keith Richards and Ron Wood of the Stones backstage at Fenway Park as “the highlight of it all.”  He has also worked with Tom Hambridge, Willie Alexander and Tony Goddess, to name just a few.

King believes Western Color is the “epitome of the sound we’ve been striving for, I can’t imagine being able to work with a better group of musicians.”

Captain Carlo’s this Week!

Thursday: Greenhead

Come and see Greenhead in their Captain Carlo’s debut. “Greenhead” is two guys (Mike and Chuck) who play acoustic guitar, sing harmonies and do a range of music from upbeat rock and roll to mellow brunch and dinner music. Greenhead’s song-list includes Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Cash, John Mayer, The Beatles, Weezer, Ryan Adams, Snow Patrol, James Taylor, Plain White Ts, Jack Johnson, Elvis Costello, Lyle Lovett, and more.

Friday: JOSHUA TREE

As The Nation’s premier tribute to U2, The Joshua Tree pride themselves with their ability to generate a unique musical experience that does not lend itself to impersonations.

Without compromising artistic integrity, the band has gone to great lengths to reproduce the distinct sound of one of the world’s most popular rock bands. Unique to The Joshua Tree is their dedication to the entire U2 songbook, including early fan favorites from the 1980-1987 period (Boy, October, War, The Unforgettable Fire, and The Joshua Tree).

Playing each song with the same intensity and emotion, the band covers all phases of U2’s career from their first album Boy to the most recent, No Line on the Horizon.

Now Joshua Tree comes to Captain Carlo’s this Friday July 24th out on the deck and under the stars. Tell all your friends about this one it’s going to be a great night of music.

Saturday: The Herland Brothers Band

Boston based THE HERLAND BROTHERS BAND is a top-notch cover/original band, meticulously performing the greatest Rock/Dance hits of yesteryear and today. Since 1994 HB’s high energy cover performances continue to wow and electrify audiences from Maine to New York, with their unique ability to cover all genres vocally and musically, matching the original artist renditions. The band’s original music continues to also excite, leading the Boston Globe to write “A band on the rise with a bright future”. The HB band has performed as either the headliner and/or as an opener for national acts all over the Northeast, including shows at the legendary CBGB’s in New York City.

Sunday: 5pm to 8pm DJ scottie Mac

Monday: The Nancy Hildegarde Jazz Extravaganza Featuring Mark Earley.
