REMINDER- LYDA KUTH EVENT THURSDAY NIGHT AT THE CAPE ANN MUSEUM

Architect Eleanor Raymond: A Pioneer in the Field
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29

The life and accomplishments of Eleanor Raymond (1887–1989), a pioneering woman in the field of architecture during the mid-20th century, will be the subject of a talk presented by documentary filmmaker Lyda Kuth. A graduate of the Cambridge School of Art and Landscape Architecture for Women, Eleanor Raymond was a noted innovator partnering with solar energy researcher Dr. Maria Telkes to design one of the first successful solar-heated buildings in the Northeast. On Cape Ann, Raymond designed homes for artist Natalie Hays Hammond, anthropologist Carlton S. Coon and a summer cottage for herself overlooking Gloucester’s outer harbor. Lyda Kuth is an independent filmmaker and Executive Director of the LEF Foundation, which supports New England independent documentary filmmakers. She has been recognized by the Massachusetts Cultural Council with the prestigious Commonwealth Award and honored by Women in Film and Video New England with an Image Award.

Special Guest: CHICK MARSTON!

I was about 13 years old when I first met Chicklet Marston.
Jonathan Pope picked up a gang of us and drove to his house
in Rockport to see if Chick wanted to buy his metal-flake blue
Fender Stratocaster. Chick, a well-schooled acoustic guitarist
with a Berklee Conservatory background, had never played an
electric guitar in his life. He had no idea what to do with the
thing, fumbling all over it – and I was left wondering what all
the fuss was about with this supposedly “great player”. Well…
couple weeks go by, him playing his vintage 1936 Martin 0018,
and I find myself going to music school BIGTIME, soaking up
all I could from this brilliant, classic American folk & blues
picker. His thumb was a perfect metronome on the bass
patterns. The music he played was simple and poignant.
He went on to introduce an entire world of music to me that
changed my life and helped build my character as a more
well-rounded musician. Staple Singers. Doc Watson. Jelly
Roll Morton. Mississippi John Hurt. Odetta. On and on and
on. Chick Marston will forever be my mentor and hero. Most
people around here, I think, just don’t know what they got.
This is no shit. ~ Fly

LEND ME YOUR EAR

https://www.instagram.com/p/BK1D-bjjX8Y/

I couldn’t resist taking a selfie with this newly emerged Monarch after she at first fluttered onto my shoulder, flew to my hat, and then decided to stay for a bit on my neck.

Butterflies have sharp crochet-like hooks at the bottom of their tarsi (butterfly name for feet) and it feels a bit pokey when they land on your skin. The hooks enable the butterfly to grip securely to surfaces. During a strong wind, the hooked tarsi are all that is keeping the butterfly grounded.

Thank you Nicole Duckworth for the photo caption 🙂

PLANTING MILKWEED WITH CAMILLA MACFADYEN AND THE SARROUFS!

img_4947img_4937Thank you to Dawn and John Sarrouf for sharing their milkweed planting photos. They are visiting their friend Camilla at her family home in Small Point Maine, which sounds like, from Dawn’s description, a gorgeously beautiful location, and ideal Monarch habitat. There are fields of wildflowers, and Seaside Goldenrod grows just as easily in the rocky outcroppings there as it does on Eastern Point. After looking at maps, it appears as if you could draw a virtual straight line from Small Point to Eastern Point. Dawn and friends spotted about ten butterflies yesterday. Perhaps we’ll be the next stop (after the predicted rainfall).

img_4946Camilla collected milkweed seed pods and enlisted the Sarroufs to help plant.

THE SCALE OF THE ZUIDERDAM

I was lucky to get the Schooner Adventure sailing past the ship during this weekend’s Trails and Sails event. I think the next largest ships in the Harbor that day were the Schooners Lannon and Adventure.

Cape Ann Symphony Opens 65th Season!

CAPE ANN SYMPHONY

THE 65th ANNIVERSARY SEASON

Yoichi Udagawa, Music Director

CAPE ANN SYMPHONY OPENS 65th SEASON WITH

BIG NIGHT, BIG MUSIC

Features Bernstein, Debussy & Respighi

Cape Ann Symphony kicks off the orchestra’s 65th Anniversary Concert Season on Saturday, September 24 at 8 pm with Big Night, Big Music featuring big thrilling symphonic pieces that showcase the talents of the CAS musicians at the CAS performance venue at Manchester-Essex High School Auditorium on 36 Lincoln Street in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA. Manchester-Essex High School Auditorium is handicapped accessible. Ticket prices are $40 for adults, $35 for senior citizens, $5 for Youth age 18 and under. For tickets and information, call 978-281-0543 or visitwww.capeannsymphony.org.

Cape Ann Symphony Conductor and Music Director Yoichi Udagawa describes the upcoming concert program, “We are starting off our 65th Anniversary Season with a concert we’re calling Big Night, BIG Music. The three pieces on the program are BIG!!!! Massachusetts born and raised Leonard Bernstein’s music from West Side Story, the French composer Claude Debussy’s description of the sea – La Mer, and the Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s musical description of the Pines around the city of Rome are three incredible, powerful, emotional, gorgeous, knock your sox off masterpieces. We’re going to give brief introductions to the pieces during the concert to show our audiences some of the reasons why these pieces continue to move and excite people all over the world. It’s going to be a BIG concert, and we can’t wait!”

Leonard Bernstein was a Massachusetts boy. Born in 1918 in Lawrence, he spent summers in Sharon, and attended Boston Latin before completing his BA at Harvard University. Though he later moved to Philadelphia (to attend the Curtis Institute) and then to New York, he remained connected to the area – studying conducting at Tanglewood and frequently leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He holds the distinction of being the first American Music Director of a major orchestra – the NY Philharmonic. Musically, he was a jack of all trades: a brilliant pianist, much sought-after conductor, a critic and lecturer on the arts, and of course, a prolific composer of music in many styles. He was a deep admirer of Copeland and other classical composers of the day, and strove to be recognized as one of them. However, one of the works he is best known for is not one of his symphonies or his chamber pieces, but rather West Side Story.

THE THREE MUSKRATEERS!

three-muskrat-family-massachusetts-copyright-kim-smithMore muskrat love! Did you know Muskrats eat phragmites?!! They gnaw off the emerging and exposed shoots at the base and then eat the green stems. Very cool. Other fun facts: Muskrats can hold their breath underwater for up to fifteen minutes. They can also chew underwater. Unlike beavers, whose tails are flattened horizontally, a muskrats tail is laterally flattened (in other words vertically). The tail functions like a rudder to help the Muskrat maneuver through water. Muskrats can swim forward and backward.three-muskrat-family-massachusetts-2-copyright-kim-smith

OUTSTANDING ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS FOR GLOUCESTER PART TWO!

niles-pond-causeway-restoration-2-copyright-kim-smithThe Niles Pond-Brace Cove causeway restoration is progressing admirably. You may recall our story about the extensive damage the causeway had suffered from several fierce back to back storms. In 2014, the Association of Eastern Point Residents restored the structural rocks supporting the causeway. This past week, preparations for restoring the plantings has begun.
