Fish On Fridays- Saturday Edition From Kathy Chapman

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This week we have interviews with sushi chef Jordan Rubin from Rocky Neck’s Madfish Grille about his famous Glosta rolls, and his goal to visit the fish auctions in Japan.

We also have a video of Jordan placing tobiko on the Glosta rolls. Tobiko is the Japanese word for the flying fish roe. The raw roe is very nutritious, due to its high vitamin content, high protein content, and large ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acids.

Still shots show their Black Thunder spicy tuna rolls and a Salmon Sushimi appetizer with charred ramp and ginger scallions. Delicious indeed!

Editor’s Note from Joey C-

The Sushi prepared at Madfish Grille is far and away the best sushi I’ve had anywhere.

I make that statement without any homerism involved.  I’ve eaten sushi all over the place- California, Las Vegas, NYC, countless high end sushi joints.  No joke- no exaggeration- the sushi at Madfish prepared by Jordan and his staff is the best I’ve ever eaten.  The most creative, the most brilliantly prepared the most savory delicious sushi I’ve ever consumed.  I can’t stress it enough.

My recommendation is to ask them to make you whatever they’d like.  Jordan told me the term for this style of ordering but I forget the Japanese saying.  Last time in we went with his recommendations and were blown away.

Thank you to the Coast Guard

The Change of Command Ceremony is a time-honored naval tradition without an equivalent counterpart in any other service. Custom has established that this ceremony be formal and dignified-designed to strengthen the respect for authority which is vital to any military organization. Parading All Hands at Quarters and public reading of official orders stem from those days when movement of mail and persons was a very slow process. The procedure was designed to ensure that only duly authorized officers held command and that all aboard were aware of an order’s authenticity. The heart of the ceremony is the formal reading of official orders by the relieving officer and the officer being relieved. The Change of Command transfers total responsibility and authority from one individual to another. The simple ceremony, passing authority and responsibility, reflects the dedication of free men and women serving their nation proudly.

Lieutenant Christjan C. Gaudio,        Commanding Officer, USCGC Grand Isle. His next assignment he is going to Saudi Arabia for a year.
Lieutenant Nolan J. Cuevas, Prospective Commanding Officer, USCGC Grand Isle

The Grand Isle is 110 feet and was built in Lockport, LA and was officially commissioned on 19 April 1991 in Gloucester, MA

On a personal note, I was very impressed with this ceremony and the dignity of our Coast Guard.

Cape Ann TV Annual Special tonight 10:30 on Channel 12

Last month we told you about Cape Ann TV’s Annual Meeting, which they filmed and it airs as a special tonight at 10:30 p.m. Channel 12.

“Why would I want to watch an annual meeting?” you ask.  Well, this is not your average annual meeting.  It’s fun.  Allen Estes and I were among 4 producers who talked briefly about our experiences and showed clips from our shows (Local Music Seen in our case).  The other producers were Kim Smith who wowed us with clips from her spectacular butterfly movie that premieres Friday at Cape Ann Community Cinema (more on that here); Shaun Goulart, who’s tale of how he came to make his thriller is almost a thrilling as the movie itself; and John Ronan, who has the longest running show on Cape Ann TV and offered us a wonderful surprise in his clips.  Here’s a taste of what you’ll see:

If you miss it tonight, you can catch it again Saturday 6/22 at 5pm and Monday 6/24 at 9pm.

One of the things Allen talked about is how the music scene in Gloucester and Cape Ann is growing.  Proof that he’s right can be witnessed this weekend with over 50 live shows to choose from starting tomorrow.  See the complete live music schedule here.

Dennis Brennan, Matt Stubbs and Dave Mattacks join Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line – 8:30-11:30

Thursday June 20th  8:30-11:30

Dave says,

Our unsub this week is none other than the fabulous Dennis Brennan, noted vocal meister, and master of the GeeWhiz clef. He’s got to be the most interesting and talented singer around these parts. Plus, he’s a walking musical encyclopedia of all styles and tunes. He’ll clean your ears out! And the chicks dig him! So do I!
He’ll be backed up by the fabulous Matt Stubbs on glitar. No slouch, he. Makes things come alive. And then there’s Dave Mattacks, on drums.  The Atomic Clock needs no introduction, unless you’ve been in a coma for many years. I might slip into one just trying to keep up.. I feel really honored to play with these guys. Pretty lucky, too. Don’t miss it. Remember we start at 8:30 now.
And thank you again for your continued support. We’re nothing without you.

Dogtown Book Shop

So far, I’ve reviewed second-hand stores that were either antique stores or thrift stores, all of which carried a variety of items, even if they had their areas of greater focus.  Here’s one of our stores that specializes in only one item: books!

_Dogtown books façadeBob Ritchie, the proprietor of Dogtown Books (132 Main St.), has stocked an incredible amount of books, “used and unusual”, as the sign says. He is selective – he tries to avoid cheap mass-distribution paperbacks, for example – but even so he has books representing a wide variety of genres, periods, etc.  See for yourself:

As with the vast majority of the people I have dealt with in these stores, Bob is also a really nice person (he let me take a photo of him with Flat Stanley for the child of friends of mine in New York…), and is very competent in his field.  He has helped me find some great books, and bought some from me to resell.

So if you love books, this is a great place to go to peruse the stacks and to look for treasures in print from the past or the present. And, if you have interesting books (in good condition) that you don’t need any more, bring them in, and maybe you can help keep the shelves stocked with quality content!  It’s just a couple of doors down from Main Street Arts and Antiques, so it’s easy to visit both stores without moving your car or walking too far.

His posted hours are Monday-Saturday, 10-6, summer Sundays 1-5, with the note that “actual hours may be sooner or later”.

The profile on Shore Road

While taking the Magnolia Historical walking tour on Shore Road in Gloucester, MA,  Jim Cook, our tour guide, told us this story of a rock formation.  This rock formation has the profile of an old woman who had a beautiful granddaughter that lived with her on Kettle Cove Island off of Shore Road.  At one time there was a sand bar that ran from Kettle Cove to Shore Road.  This story happened maybe in Colonial Times.  Since on the island there was no food for her sheep and cattle, the old woman would take the animals to a farm on Shore Road via the sand bar.  Since she had no money, the farmer, which legend states, that he was ugly, wanted to marry her beautiful granddaughter instead of money.  In the meantime, the granddaughter, out on the rocks one day met a handsome skipper who told her he would be back.  The granddaughter refused the old woman of the proposed marriage and the old woman locked her in the house.  One day the granddaughter was able to escape the house and was thinking of suicide on the rocks, the handsome skipper came back and she and her skipper lived happily ever after.  The old woman was so angry she put a curse on the farm land that no livestock would survive there.  The sand bar is no longer there, but the profile of this old woman is.

Nashville rising star on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tomorrow (WED)

Last week we posted that Louise Mosrie is back on Cape Ann this Saturday to play at Old Sloop and since her first trip to Cape Ann was to record a special show of Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, we felt it fitting to reprise that show this week.

You can see it tomorrow (WED) at 6:30 pm, Friday at 1:30 pm and Sunday at 6 pm on Cape Ann TV channel 12.

This show will get you psyched to see her live.  Even though her TV performance reaches through the screen and grabs your heart, there’s just no substitute for her live shows.  This one is likely to sell out so get your tickets now -right here.

Main Street Arts and Antiques

And now, after a cat post, back to our regularly scheduled programming – my series on second-hand shopping in Gloucester! Today we visit another antique store, Main Street Arts and Antiques (124 Main St.), run by GMG contributor David Cox.

_main street arts and antiques façadeThe store is open 11-5 Mon-Sat, 1-5 Sunday.  David sells a wide variety of items.  I asked him what his store has that others don’t – for what kind of item would his store be the go-to place?  His response: ephemera! Think postcards and things of that sort. I believe that genus also includes what I have seen there a few times – a significant selection of antique photos, photo albums, and scrap books, which are fascinating. They give you a glimpse into the life of a person or a family long-dead and often unidentified in the material.  For romantics like me, seeing those old photos and clippings allows you to imagine the story and background of the family, coming up with explanations for the clothing and expressions in the photos.  I bought some as a gift for my sister-in-law who enjoys vintage photos. I have to admit I wast tempted to keep some for myself…

So anyway, here are some photos of the store, to give you a better idea:

As you can see, he has lots of different things!  He also sells prints of some of his own photos; his photographic skills are well known to regular GMG readers.

Birthday Rainbows

image

A double rainbow appeared over the Fort this evening. As I was outside surveying street lighting on the West End with Lucinda Seigel of Gloucester, we saw it and I ran down Palizola’s parking lot to take photos. Absolutely stunning, as was Donna’s picture. But then I saw four ladies photographing it and just had to investigate. This is what I got. No double rainbow at this point, but a story: They are L-R Christine (NH), Alissa Cohen (Gloucester), Isabelle (Beverly), and Deb (Gloucester). They had a birthday dinner celebration for Alissa on Main Street, and the rainbow was icing on the cake! Only in Gloucester!
