Seal pup takes a nap

This seal pup chose to take a nap on our dock today. The kids were allowed to see it, but we kept our distance and let him rest. He looked pretty tired, and we saw him swimming in the seaweed in cove after he went back in the water… Good luck seal pup!

Patio Farewell Week From Terry Weber

Hi Joey, 

For the last two weeks, the owners of the Patio Restaurant–John and Irene Burke, have bid farewell to their restaurant and to their many friends, family members, and ‘regulars’ at the Patio. The Burkes recently sold the Patio after over 30 years in business on Lexington Avenue in Magnolia. Click on this link for just a few snapshots of one of their farewell parties.

The Patio has been described by many as a “home away from home, an extension of one’s own living room, a clubhouse” and more. This is due to the warm hearts and hospitality of John and Irene, their family members: Margo and Chris Rezza, Melissa and James Rezza, and long time friends and co-workers: Kathy Mackin, Lori Somers, Dave Morley, Charlene Young, and Lopes. 

Thank you to John and Irene Burke, and their family, who have made the Patio a second home to many Magnolia & Gloucester residents. Even though “we’ll see you around the neighborhood”, we’ll miss seeing you on a regular basis as you enjoy some long overdue relaxation. The neighborhood won’t be the same without the Patio.

Degeylse Buoy Found- Long Cove Point Chamberlain Maine

From Gloucester To Long Point Cove Chamberlain Maine

Dear Joey,
My name is Dale Cooke and in the summers I reside in Chamberlain, Maine.  Today has been a rough seas day, as was last night.  While walking around Long Cove Point Road (where my cottage is), I spotted a very large buoy with Egelyse and 000777 on the side and VII on the top.  I Googled  Egelyse and came up with your name and website (which I have subscribed to).  My husband, Matt, climbed down into the gut of Long Cove Point and brought back the buoy.  We now have it at our cottage.  I don’t know if the Capt. wants it back…it’s in fine shape, the rope is the only thing that gave out.  I will be here until the end of Oct. so if he does want it back he is more than welcome to come and get it.  I would bring it down on my way back to Alabama, but it is just too big with all the stuff I have to carry home.  If not, we will keep it here at the cottage, and next season if he wants it and is in the area he is more than welcome to it.  Otherwise, I will clean it up and keep it in the garden.

Schooner Roseway

While searching though my photo library, I discovered a batch of stills from the Schooner Festival that I have not yet posted because I was so intent on editing the Schooner Festival video. I’ll try to post them this weekend–if everyone hasn’t already had enough of schooner photos!

The Schooner Roseway is a National Historic Landmark, owned and operated by World Ocean School, which is located in Camden, Maine. She is a gaff-rigged schooner and was first launched from Essex in 1925.  The Roseway runs sails out of Boston during the summer and out of Savannah, Georgia and St. Croix during the winter months.

History of the Roseway from the World Ocean School website: 

In the fall of 1920 a Halifax, Nova Scotia, newspaper challenged the fisherman of Gloucester, Massachusetts, to a race between the Halifax fishing schooners and the Gloucester fleet. Therefore many schooners, such as Roseway, built at this time were not strictly designed for fishing but in order to protect American honor in the annual races.

Roseway, 137′ in sparred length, was designed as a fishing yacht by John James and built in 1925 in his family’s shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts. Father and son worked side by side on Roseway, carrying on a long New England history of wooden shipbuilding. She was commissioned by Harold Hathaway of Taunton, Massachusetts, and was named after an acquaintance of Hathaway’s “who always got her way.” Despite her limited fishing history, Roseway set a record of 74 swordfish caught in one day in 1934.

Great Day for a Sail From Mary Barker

Hi Joey,

Sunday afternoon was a spectacular day for a sail.   The Adventure took full advantage with the first of hopefully many Thank You Sails.  We sailed with 52 people who have/had been volunteers, donors, crew and board members at various times in the last 25 years.

It was so much fun to have the various ‘generations’ of the Adventure’s restoration team aboard.  There were so many stories shared, friendships renewed, and new friendships started.  We plan to continue our Thank You Sails with intention of including as many of the people as possible who have participated in making this dream a reality.

Hometown Girl, Caitlin McGrath, makes it big in LA

Joe McGrath send us this post about a new single and independent record label from Gloucester native, Caitlin McGrath.  Check it out!

Caitlin McGrath released her first single and music video this month under her independent label. The video depicts her ‘Change of Scenery’ song starting with a drive to the airport in the ’65 Buick Riviera, then a trip around the globe to Japan, Korea, Italy, Morocco and more. Caitlin is working in LA, but will be visiting Cape Ann next month for her sister’s wedding celebration.

Pod of Harbor Seals at Brace Cove

This morning at Brace Cove there was a pod of Harbor Seals sunning themselves; unfortunately a little too far out of range for my movie camera, but I tried filming nonetheless. They were wonderful fun to observe especially as the younger members of the pod seemed more interested in playing “King of the Rock,” rather than basking in the sun. It was challenging to figure out a total number because the younger seals were so playful, but I think there were ten in the herd. I only know this from one of the snapshots where you can see ten in all. Because the Harbor Seals were out of my camera’s ability to sharply focus, the footage may be too grainy, but I will try working with it.

In case you are wondering, as did I, a goup of seals is most commonly referred to as a pod or colony. The terms harem, herd, and rookery are also used, depending upon from where you originate.

I can only hope the young Harbor Seal hauled out at Good Harbor Beach earlier this summer has a pod to which it belongs!

Fish on Fridays

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

Last night and this morning Kathy and Marty photographed the clam flats in Essex where most of the local clams are caught and then sold at Gloucester’s Intershell  http://intershell.biz/.

The 4 feet below and above normal tides during this full moon was a great situation for the clammers. Because razor clams like the shoreline they were easier to catch in this “minus” tide.

Both whelks and conchs are carnivorous gastropods. They eat horseshoe crabs and are a by-catch of the lobster traps and dredging cages used for surf clams.

Moonbeams Over Niles Pond

Yesterday afternoon I was photographing a friend’s garden, looking west towards the very last shimmer of sunlight as it melted into the horizon. I packed up my gear and while heading home, passed the rising Harvest Moon brightly illuminating Niles Pond. Knowing my family was home hungrily waiting for dinner, I hopped out of the car and snapped away for only a brief moment, wishing I could stay but happy to to get a few photos. At this time of year, every which way you turn brings the reward of unfolding beauty.
