Wicked Learning From Wicked Tuna
My boys have been super excited about spotting Wicked Tuna boats all summer long. I have to admit it is pretty darn cute listening to the two of them talking about the boats, crew, fish, green sticks, the price per pound, fat quality, this pound test or that pound test, etc. While they’ve watched the show here and there during past seasons, they’re just a bit older this year…and hence, much more into it. Likewise, for whatever the reasons, the North vs. South episodes that are currently airing get them giddy.
They clocked some serious hours at the Blue Fin Blowout back earlier this summer and I was so proud of how long they sat patiently waiting for boats to arrive. They were completely riveted by the weigh-ins and the size of the fish. They couldn’t get down there fast enough for Day #2 of the action. A couple of weekends ago they got their “Wicked Tuna” on down at the wharf and thought they were the coolest cats in town when they got to haul their own little fish down the dock. And, worth mentioning, they both gobbled up the sushi like it was candy after helping my husband clean the fish. Finn hasn’t quite mastered the “Tails Up” yet though.
Despite witnessing their enthusiasm all summer, I was still surprised to see the journal entry that Thatcher wrote at school yesterday. Love that kid! I get that many probably find the fact that we let our 5 and 7 year-olds watch Wicked Tuna in the first place may not be the best of parenting decisions….but, I’ll take the learning opportunity and run with it. (insert shameless shout out to his amazing teachers at the Harborlight-Stoneridge Montessori School).
Just more proof that growing up salty is excellent and that this little slice of heaven that we call home is bursting at the seams with opportunities for the kiddos to find something unique that speaks to them and to be passionate about.

Brothers in Cancer, Brothers Forever
This past Sunday, my friend and brother-in-law, Robert Lee Doss (L), died after a courageous battle with cancer. He was diagnosed last February, two weeks after my own cancer diagnosis. Robert and my sister, “Painter Barb,” lived on Martha’s Vineyard, and were frequent guests at GMG and my own events at the gallery.
Robert was a CPA, attorney, and Chief Revenue Officer for the State of Alaska. This photo was taken by sista’ Barb during our last visit together, which was a delightful luncheon at the Emerson Inn. Rest in peace Robert, you were a true friend and the best oyster shucker and grill master I ever knew.

Making Limoncello with Friends and Nina Groppo’s Cucuzza

This past weekend filming continued on the Feast of Saint Joseph Community Film Project. Nina and Frank Groppo serve the most wonderful homemade limoncello during the Feast and we decided back in March to include limoncello-making in the story of how Saint Joseph’s special day is celebrated in Gloucester. Nina, Kathy, Catherine, and Jane not only graciously agreed to allow filming, but also included me in the preparations and you’ll see what fun we had in the forthcoming film!
While at the Groppo’s garden you can’t help but notice their amazing crop of cucuzza (pronounced ku-koz-za, also goo-gootz), hanging from their handmade arbor. Cucuzza is an Italian squash that from what I understand, in English, means something like “super long squash.” A single squash can grow ten inches in one day!
For our first of several limoncello-making days, Nina created a beautiful lunch. She served cucuzza soup, made from both the fruit and the leaves. It was fabulous and delicious and like no other soup I had sampled before. She also baked wonderfully fresh hake filets and prepared a lovely tomato salad, with heirloom tomatoes from her garden.
Nina described how she hand pollinates the fruit ~ Each plant produces male and female flowers. She explains that it is easy to identify the female flowers as they have a small swollen fruit (ovary) on the stem, just behind the flowers. She plucks the male flowers off the vine and gently brushes together the male’s anther and female’s stigma, the flower’s reproduction parts, which insures good pollination. By removing the male flowers from the vine, you are not eliminating any potential fruit because the male flowers don’t bear fruit.
I have been planning an arbor for my garden patio for sometime and after seeing and tasting the Groppo’s fabulous cucuzza, I am not waiting any longer to build one!

Last night, after being taken home by the wonderful CATA ADA (disability) lift bus, I walked into a dark and empty house. Finding no matches to light a candle, I located my dad’s 1970’s rechargeable flashlight. Still no matches, even though we had just bought three hundred at the dollar store. I opened the freezer door, and as it swung shut, it bit me. Not wanting to bleed all over the floor, I grabbed a napkin and a rubber band. My nurse friends may hate me, but all is well. Then the power came back on. I just had to laugh.

Burnham’s Field to reopen with a splash
Ribbon-Cutting this Saturday, Sept. 6, at 9 a.m. to show improvements to central Gloucester’s largest green space and playground
(Gloucester, MA)—Mayor Carolyn Kirk and Ward 2 City Councilor Melissa Cox invite Gloucester residents to the reopening of the Burnham’s Field Playground on Saturday Sept. 6, 2014. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. followed by a ceremonial “first splash” at the playground’s new spray fountain
The renovation of Burnham’s Field, the largest green space and playground in central Gloucester, is the first major reconstruction of Burnham’s Field in 30 years. The renovation includes two new playgrounds, swings, a spray pad for kids, resurfaced basketball courts, new trees and benches, and a paved path around the field for walking, jogging or riding. The renovation follows the creation of the Burnham’s Field Community Garden in 2011, part of a five-year effort to turn one of Gloucester’s most heavily used fields and playgrounds into a more beautiful, welcoming place for families, children and neighbors.
Mayor Kirk expressed her appreciation for all the hard work that went in to making this improvement happen. “The reopening of the Burnham’s Field Playground culminates a five-year effort by the City and the neighborhood to create a more family-friendly atmosphere for Burnham’s Field. Families with children will enjoy the expanded playground and new spray fountain. Residents of all ages will enjoy the paved pathways and benches that make the Field accessible to all residents.”
Gloucester’s Community Development Department secured state, federal and City Community Preservation grants to fund the project. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s Natural Resource Damage program is providing $195,000 towards the $565,000 project cost. The balance of $370,000 is being funded with Federal Community Development Block Grant funds and City Community Preservation Funds.
John McElhenny, a neighbor of Burnham’s Field, said the renovation showed how Gloucester residents and the City can work together. “The renovation of Burnham’s Field shows that in Gloucester, green spaces matter and getting outside and running and playing matter,” said McElhenny, who noted that the new Friends of Burnham’s Field are welcoming donations of trees, park benches and picnic tables to beautify the field. “This renovation is a wonderful first step in making Burnham’s Field a park that every Gloucester resident can be proud of.”
David W. Cash, Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, congratulated the City and neighborhood on the success of the project. “We’re happy that residents of all ages can go out and enjoy the outdoor environment that our agency works so diligently to protect. We’re pleased that Gloucester was able to utilize one-time-only funds from a court-ordered landfill closure project to help clean-up a field that was often overlooked in the past.”

My response:
I recall our meeting and so good to hear from you Gia. No, its not too late. Many species of butterflies are on the wing during the late summer and early autumn months, as long as the warm weather holds up. Hopefully, too, the monarch migration will be more successful this year than last. I find the best time of day to see the most species of butterflies is from about 10:30 to about 3ish (generally the warmest and sunniest hours of the day).

Destination Gloucester….celebrity run in.
As if some steamers and a good drink at Halibut Point with a great friend isn’t excellent enough….last night I happened across a wonderful party of about 20 diners out to celebrate a wedding of dear friends. While we didn’t chat long, the happiness exuding from their large table was palpable and I was so happy to have had the chance to meet them.
The fact that I met them at all stemmed from the fact that some of the younger-than-me wait staff recognized one of the guests as a very handsome actor. Doing my due diligence as a GMG contributor (who happened to be wearing my GMG baseball hat…go figure) I introduced myself and got a bit of the scoop.
Yanic Triesdale, a Canadian actor, also adored in the United States as Michael on The Gilmore Girls in addition to other series and mini-series, is in town to celebrate the destination wedding of dear friends Isabelle Lafleche and very soon-to-be-husband, Patrice. While, maybe not as recognizable in person to those dining at Halibut, Isabelle is the fantastic, and incredibly beautiful, author of the novels J’Adore New York and J’Adore Paris. I can’t get to Barnes and Nobles fast enough. She also happens, as it turns out, to be good friends with GMG’s own, Kim Smith.
They were completely charming and talking with them made me smile. I was, for the record, incredibly happy to learn that my own dear friend, while recognizing that I was mildly intruding on a rehearsal dinner of sorts, bought the table a couple of bottles of wine in thanks for humoring me.
Excellent examples of friendship on both sides of my iPhone last night.
Cheers to friendship….mine, Kim’s, everyone’s. Cheers to Isabelle and Patrice on a glorious wedding and a lifetime of happiness. How special that they chose Rockport, of all places, to seal the deal.
