I’ve never met an amaryllis I didn’t love and ‘Lemon Lime’ is no exception. The flowers are slightly smaller than many cultivars, compared to that of ‘Orange Sovereign’ for example, however, the plant often sends up two and three stalks at the same time. The exquisite pale chartreuse complements nearly every color scheme imaginable and is wonderfully fresh and spring-like to help stave away those dreary drab winter-hued blues.
For the past several years, I celebrated the New Year quietly, usually with dinner at home and early to bed. And that’s what I like now. We’ll be closed New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Insider Tip: If you like to buy wine at the Cave, do it now. They have great wine at reasonable prices, and you can score some cheese while you’re there. Their seasonal retail beer and wine license expires on 1/1/2015. Laura’s shop is a great resource on my block, and for all of Main Street. Please remember to support the Cave and all of the unique retailers downtown over the winter. Photo taken in the Cave.

I couldn’t resist the title of the post–the name of Shawn’s boat is the “Hot Ticket.” Many thanks to Shawn for granting permission to photograph and post photos on GMG.
I have to confess that the holiday season, from Thanksgiving to yesterday, two days after Christmas, have exhausted me. Black Friday, Ladies’ Night, Men’s Night, the GMG Holiday party (the last two being back to back). I was also open every afternoon except Sundays from about noon to 5:15 pm, catching the last CATA bus to Rockport. My electrician described himself as “feeling like junk”, after a tough night. I feel like that every day, especially in my legs and abdomen, from the exertion at PT, work, and related to my cancer. If not for my medical professionals and friends helping me, it never could have happened.
Tomorrow, Monday, I have physical therapy at Addison Gilbert Hospital, which may be my last session until a rollover date. I’ve been a steady show-up at PT, like a football pro who’d get fined for a no-show. January will be a time of rest. This week, I’ll be open Monday 12/29, Tuesday 12/30, Friday 1/2/15, and Saturday 1/3/15. I carry on.

“Join us for a Holiday Celtic music session at the Dog Bar Sunday evening, 5:30-8:30 – I’ll be joined by David de la Barre, Linda Shields Swicker and Adrienne Howard – and rumor has it that Stringman Steve Levy will be joining us as well, so them strings will be singin’!”
Dear Joe – I grew up in Gloucester in the 60s and 70s, one of seven kids, all of whom graduated from Gloucester High. I have been enjoying GoodMorningGloucester, and recently found the great reminiscences of Melissa Abbott on Gloucester in the 1960s and 1970s. Our father, Dr. Walter E. O’Donnell, came to Gloucester in 1960, started his own medical practice and eventually led a group practice that grew into Cape Ann Medical Center. I have lots of fond memories of going on house calls with him all over Gloucester and Rockport. Gloucester in the early 1960s was still a place where everyone made house calls. Every week, Bud Murphy from Railroad Avenue Market (naturally, not on RR Ave but on East Main St where the Last Stop is now) would show up at our door with all our groceries, including the greenest bananas he could find for my father. In a smelly symmetry, once a week Joe the garbage man, with his big smile under the dirtiest watch cap, would come by to collect our garbage, and haul it back to feed it banquet-style to the pigs at the piggery off Eastern Ave. And of course, we all remember the famous housecalls that Sylvester Deering made to that little white house on Stacy Boulevard – when the Cut Bridge broke, naturally in the upright position, Mr. Deering was the only person who knew how to fix it. My dad made hundreds of house calls a year, right up until he retired in 1989. My family and I have been reminiscing about Dad’s house calls, and wondered if any of your readers have any housecall stories to share.
Thanks. WJ O’Donnell

Large Tangled Mass Washed Up at Brace Cove ~ approximately 8 feet wide by 5 feet high
I’ve always used the words interchangeably to describe any debris washed up on the beach, not realizing there is a notable difference. From the NOAA website: “Flotsam and jetsam are terms that describe two types of marine debris associated with vessels. Flotsam is defined as debris in the water that was not deliberately thrown overboard, often as a result from a shipwreck or accident. Jetsam describes debris that was deliberately thrown overboard by a crew of a ship in distress, most often to lighten the ship’s load. The word flotsam derives from the French word floter, to float. Jetsam is a shortened word for jettison.
Under maritime law the distinction is important. Flotsam may be claimed by the original owner, whereas jetsam may be claimed as property of whoever discovers it. If the jetsam is valuable, the discoverer may collect proceeds received though the sale of the salvaged objects.”
It is also noted on the website that the majority of trash that covers our beaches and floats in our oceans comes from sewers and storm drains, as well as from recreational activities, namely from picnickers and beach goers.

Paulie Walnuts talks about his energy audit from Next Step:
We had the Energy Audit on the 22nd. Chris was our person. He was great. We got alot of free LED Lights and power strips. We are also getting attic insulation really cheap! It was worth a couple of hours of our time. I’m a skeptical person. This out-did my expectations. JUST DO IT!
If you want to take advantage of awesome programs available to you right now for zero out of pocket then sign up for your own energy efficiency assessment and get a ton of free lightbulbs, power strips, electronic thermostats that will turn down the heat at night or while you’re at work automatically, and efficient showerheads.
Thanks to my mother-in-law Janet for sending this lovely arrangement from Sage Floral ~ and thanks to Sage Floral for making our Christmas table so pretty!

Last night about 60 people enjoyed a Solstice Stroll through Ravenswood Park. The walk began as the sun was setting and a light snow was falling. Led by Ramona Latham and volunteers of the Trustees of Reservations, the crowd learned about the history of Ravenswood, its animal life, and the meaning of the winter solstice. Flashlights were discouraged even as it grew darker, but Ramona provided makeshift “candles in cans” to light the way. After the walk, the crowd enjoyed hot cocoa and s’mores by a campfire. What a peaceful and beautiful way to mark the weekend of the “shortest day” of the year. Enjoy the pics of Ravenswood at night, especially the pic of the fog creeping in, it’s a bit mysterious but beautiful.

Mayor Carolyn Kirk and Police Chief Leonard Campanello are pleased to announce the graduation of five new police officers from the West Boylston Police Academy after 22 weeks of training
Officers David D’Angelo, Jared Foote, Keith Gaudenzi, Robert Morrissey, and Michael Cimoszki will now enter the Field Training portion of their employment, followed by a probationary period of one year.
A total of eight new police officers are expected to join Gloucester over the next few months, as three additional officers are slated to attend the Police Academy hosted by the MBTA Transit Police in February 2015.
“I am extremely proud of these five officers. We have put them through a very rigorous process in prepping for the academy and then 22 weeks of official training. They are the best of the best in my opinion and will serve Gloucester well after their Field Officer Training,” Chief Campanello said. “I am also looking forward to adding three officers in February. It’s invigorating to have such high-quality candidates to serve the City of Gloucester.”
The eight new officers replace those who have retired or have been promoted out of the patrol division.
