The guys were incredibly generous with their time and patient with the crazed fans. The way it ought to be when you become famous, respecting the fans and giving back.

Before the event I had a five minute exclusive GMG interview with Josh Harris and the Hillstrand Brothers from The Deadliest Catch. The interview will take a bit to process but a short clip of the entrance should be live for you guys by 8AM. The interview with the boys will be posted tonight at 8PM.

Just wanted to update you and the GMG readers about Monday’s fundraiser to benefit Gloucester Little League featuring Andy & Jonathan Hillstrand from the Time Bandit.
My phone is ringing off the hook today with people calling looking to see if we still have tickets. The calls are coming from all over Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Maine. The event was covered in the Herald today and we expect a feature story in The Beacon tomorrow. I am hopeful that this event will be a sell-out, as was last year’s event featuring Sig Hansen.
People from “over the bridge” will have to buy their tickets at the door or come to Gloucester to get the tickets in advance. Locals who want to attend the event should purchase their tickets at Jeff’s Variety in the next few days to assure that are guaranteed admission to the event.
Looking forward to seeing everybody there for a fun evening.

Matt and his son have been working in the yard on a pile of traps for a while now. New traps can cost close to $80 so when you can buy decent used traps you can save a good amount of money. The used traps that lobstermen usually buy need to be “gone through”. Gone through meaning- the knitted heads may need repairing, the wooden slats on the bottom of the trap may need to be replaced to protect the bottom of the trap from wear, the escape vents might need new hog rings to keep them secure or the trap might just need to be brushed off from dead growth.
Pictured below is hake. Hake is commonly used in fish cakes. It’s a good white meat fish.
Back when we used to handle fish an old time fisherman- Leo the Flounder would hang out in the mornings and tell old waterfront stories. He spent a good part of the last ten years of his life down the dock, sipping coffee and keeping us informed on what was happening around town. He was a character a real waterfront character and I miss him.
Anyway, about twice a year Leo would make a big pan of (poopieties) – not the right spelling but sounds exactly the way it is spelled. Poopieties were hake fish cakes fried up in the good Italian olive oil.
When we had a big trip of hake we would give Leo a couple of steakers (large hake) and he would fry up a batch. The thing I loved about them and I’ll never forget was the amount of garlic he would use. He’d try to kill you with the garlic. We would normally be working so hard that we would pound down a ridiculous number of poopieties and then as the day went on and you were sweating you could smell it coming out your pores.
Good times- I miss you Flounder.

I’ve been bringing you updates on the progress of the Plan B renovation for a couple months now and our good buddy Paul Frontiero sent in this excellent video of the seine boat being loaded onto the stern.

I got some video when dropping off some empty fish totes at Cape Seafoods yesterday. Looks like the Plan B will be making its maiden voyage as a herring seiner soon. Yesterday they were loading the net aboard.
