Willow Rest Cider Donut Machine

They were just making donuts in this machine ten minutes prior to me taking this shot.  This entire piece of donut making equipment looks like it just was set up brand new out of the box.  If cleanliness is next to godliness then Willow Rest must be heaven.

Signs of Spring

As a newbie I am still trying to figure out the first signs of spring on the island. Since moving from the midwest to New England in 1970 I am really looking for my spring of childhood. March was windy but ended up warm followed by a month of flowers which continued up to race day on Memorial Day in Indianapolis. Springs are a tad shorter around here but just as good as long as you don’t miss the first signs. Saint Patrick’s Day you are supposed to get your peas planted. Well dang, now the ground is as hard as Cape Ann granite. What are my poor peas doing now?

Anyway, signs of spring I have gathered in the past two years. Home and Garden Show at Gloucester High School today. Check. Top Dog opening today for their tenth season on the neck. Double check. (If you become a fan of the dog on Facebook you can learn the secret word and get money off your dogs this weekend.)

Now I wait for the first sign of summer. Cape Pond butt crack as he fills the ice chest in front of Willow Rest while I finish off my Cuban sandwich. That’s a good one. But right now I wait for Mister and Misses Bathroom sign to announce as you enter Rockport that the pipes will not freeze and you can powder your nose while picking up brochures at the Info booth. That’s the sign I love.

What’s your sign?

Breakfast with Joey? What the Winners can expect-

Joey’s a great Guy always giving up his free time for a good cause. Such as this Friday’s auction for the East Gloucester Elementary School. He’s agreed to be a “prize”. You can win Breakfast with him at Sailor Stans!

This probably sounded like a great idea:  Having Breakfast with Joey of GMG.

Just think of all the great conversation you could have with someone so connected to this great City!

But the winners are in for a surprise. I know from experience that joey does’nt talk much when he’s eating. Also watch your fingers when reaching for the last piece of Bacon. It could be a big mistake.

But there is a good side to this story. You can have a great breakfast at Sailor Stans;

 GOOD LUCK!

Your going to need it.

 Edited by Joey-

I took out a disgusting video that mr bananahead decided to post.  Damn it Paulie.  I just finished dinner and am thoughrouly grossed out by I just witnessed.  I normally have a pretty strong stomach but I honestly feel sick to my stomach right now.

“YEAH RIGHT! This from the Guy who sponsored the Infamous CORN DOG Challenge.”

Heather Atwood and Lenny Linquata Tape The 100th Episode Of The Gloucester Daily Times Taste of The Times

Last night The Gloucester Daily Times held it’s 100th taping of it’s Taste of The Times Food Show at Cruiseport Gloucester.  My buddy and new GMG contributor Joe Langhan asked me to go and I didn’t know if I would be able to make it but my sister Felicia was going to be there and things just happened to fall into place to allow me to make it.  I expected there to be about 30-40 people there but when I pulled up there was a capacity crowd of about 250.

It was a great night for several reasons- I got to meet a lot of the people from the Times that I email with often but never had met face to face along with many friends and fans of the blog that I’d never met in person.  There was a ton of food there.  I mean a TON but even though I hadn’t eaten beforehand I only sampled a few excellent pieces of sushi from Lat 43 and a small cup of the new Folly Cove rum from Ryan and Wood Distillery. I was starving but meeting new people will always trump hunger.  Making friends to me is what life is all about.

Nordstrom Cafe Bistro

Every time we go to Nordstrom Cafe Bistro we have an outstanding experience.  There’s hardly ever anyone in there which must be due to its tucked away location but it is fantastic in every detail.  The service is always great, the food tasty, fresh and prepared perfectly and the prices are reasonable. Last night our server John was super kind and efficient and that has been my experience with each and every one of the staff here.  I know it isn’t all that trendy to recommend a place that is a chain of sorts but this food and service and room are worth a visit.  I promise you will not be disappointed.

Ken Duckworth Prepares Line Caught Gloucester Cod on Taste of the Times

Click the picture to watch Ken Duckworth of Duckworth's Bistrot and Duckworth Beach Gourmet prepare a remarkably easy gourmet dish.

Ken explains that he does not just cook, he composes a meal based on contrasting flavors in order to fully engage your taste buds. Whenever possible he also uses ingredients that are from local waters and farms. In this recipe he utilizes a line caught cod from a Gloucester fisherman and makes a celery root puree similar to mashed potatoes.”]<a href=”http://food.gloucestertimes.com/?

Cheddar Cheese Soda Bread–a simple recipe with great results!

Hi All!  I made this recipe when I got an email from the King Arthur Flour Company with a similar recipe.  I changed it up a little but the original is so delicious that I didn’t do much, trust me!  I wanted to make the bread a little healthier so I changed out some of the all purpose flour for some King Arthur White Whole Wheat flour (which has more fiber) and used reduced fat cheese instead of full fat.  I also upped the salt a bit because I prefer a tiny bit more salt in my bread.  If you make it, please let me know what you think.

Cheddar Cheese Soda Bread

1 1/2 cups King Arthur White Whole Wheat Flour
1 cup all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons cold salted butter, cut in to small pieces
8 oz reduced fat cheddar cheese (I used jalapeno cheddar for a kick), shredded
1 cup buttermilk
1 large egg, at room temperature

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together flours, baking powder, baking soda and salt.  Work in cold butter with fingertips until small crumbs form.  Add cheese and toss to combine.

In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and eggs until well combined.  Add to flour and cheese mixture and fold until just combined.

Turn dough out on to a well floured surface.  Knead several times and shape in to a smooth ball.  Transfer to prepared baking sheet.

Bake in preheated oven for 30-40 minutes until golden brown and a skewer inserted in to the middle of the loaf comes out clean.  Allow to cool slightly before serving.  Makes excellent sandwich bread or toast.

Tonight- Timebank Event At Alchemy

From Kristin Elaine Myers

Here below are the details of a really fun and worthwhile event tomorrow night to take place at Alchemy owned by another dear friend Mark McDonough who as you may know does a lot of wonderful things for our community. Mark helped to found the Cape Ann Timebank a few years ago and tomorrow night he will provide the place and the food for the fund-raiser for that organization in which I am a member.  This is a worthy cause but even if you don’t know or care about Timebanks, it is a good deal:  $7-$10 (sliding scale) includes the food and music by the renowned and beloved band Groove. Come out and have a great time with your neighbors and friends while also helping to support a good cause.  See you there!!!!

Cape Ann TimeBank will hold a benefit party and raffle at Alchemy Bistro on Duncan Street in Gloucester on March 20, 2010, featuring the popular local band, Groove.  The theme of the event is “Let’s get together and feel alright.”  Admission will be on a sliding scale of $7 – 10 and will include a free raffle ticket as well as a free selection of Alchemy Bistro’s foods. Groove performs an upbeat eclectic mix of classic rock and new alternative sounds of ska & reggae with an emphasis on making crowds dance.  The fun starts at 9:30 pm and continues until 12:30 am.  For more information about the TimeBank:  www.capeanntimebanks.org Info about the dance: Nancy Goodman 978 546-9551 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 978 546-9551 end_of_the_skype_highlighting ngoodman52@yahoo.com or  Cheryl Davis 413 454-4682 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 413 454-4682 end_of_the_skype_highlighting c_davis62@hotmail.com.
