Good Luck Joe and Memory!

Sydney at West End Sweets

My grad-daughter has a severe milk allergy which is  not the same as lactose intolerance, and since so many foods are made with milk and milk products these days that we have to pay attention to what’s in just about everything she  eats.   I wanted her to have a great time at the Fiesta, without the worry.

I ran into Steve Maniaci co-owner of WEST END SWEETS and he guaranteed that she could have a sweet treat at West End Sweets and no worry.  He called ahead to the store and made sure that they used a sterile scoop when they made her a raspberry treat with gummy bears.  She loved it, and thank you Steve for making her day.

Parents with children and want to give their kids a treat visit West End Sweets, kids without milk allergies can enjoy the best ice cream in town, but if  they do have milk allergies,  Steve and his staff  will bend over backwards to insure the safety of your child.

They also carry other sweets, I felt like a kid again.

Thanks again Steve.

Niece Amandacakes got this pan seared Scallops over Caesar.  The Scallops were huge and cooked perfectly.  It’s tough to cook large scallops perfectly because they are so big you want them cooked through but not to lose their moisture.  Missy is a pro!

Chickity Check It! Heather Atwood Puts The Spotlight On Sicilian Food Traditions With Sister Felicia

From The Gloucester Daily Times-

Keeping tradition as others fall out of flavor

Food for Thought Heather Atwood

No one can deny how fast the world has changed in this century, or the velocity with which we’ve discarded cultural traditions. Many ethnic foods are seen in the rear-view mirror as the bus pulls out of town, leaving behind raw sea urchins eaten at a picnic table, scooped with a hunk of crusty Italian bread, and speeds toward a horizon at which everyone eats basically the same 12 dishes.

Communities forever defined themselves by the foods they made, but now most children in this country choose macaroni and cheese over just about anything. Women choose Caesar salads, and men Buffalo wings. This is not about “local” or “sustainable” foods; it’s about the fact that some dishes — recipes that absolutely described who a person was and what community they lived in — for whatever reason are not so slowly fading into the past. Fortunately, in some cases, they are simply evolving into something different.

Amy’s Coffee and Cones Now Serving Killer Dogs

Amy Blake Had Me Swing By To Sample One of Her Killer Dogs On Rocky Neck.  I’m telling you (and maybe I shouldn’t let out the secret) that her little deck next to the shop has the best little ocean breeze and view of Smith’s Cove.  A perfect spot to bring the kids for a hot dog and ice cream while sitting and taking in the beautiful view.

Duckworth Beach Gourmet Newsletter

Dear Joey,

It’s official! Today is the first day of summer for the Northern Hemisphere. Gloucester’s official summer begins mid-week with Fiesta. In a way, summer in Gloucester both speeds up and slows down. The energy and activities increase, but driving around town on sunny weekend days can be frustrating. We all tend to plan our trips around peak beach times.

Duckworth’s Beach Gourmet is expanding our hours. Look below for the new times, and remember that the store remains open on Thursday evenings until 8:00 p.m. for our community wine tastings.

Everybody in Gloucester seems to have a favorite sausage sub, and we’ve met most of the folks who believe, as we do, that Trupianos is the best. Stop by and check it out. Mike

Ciaramitaro makes the sausage right in our kitchen and it’s the real deal. We’ll make you a sandwich or you can buy the sausage fresh and create your own masterpiece at home.

Ken Duckworth’s prepared foods continue to astonish. It seems every day there’s a new seasonal offering. He’s featuring more summer foods – like chicken salads and salmon.

St. Peter’s Fiesta

Cheese and Wine

The 2010 annual St Peter’s Fiesta is now upon us. Stop by and feed your appetite with a Trupianos sausage sub with peppers and onions, grilled outside the store on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We think that our store may be a quiet and cool oasis during Fiesta, and like all good oases. We’ll have plenty of cold beverages ready to go too.

New Store Hours

Summer is here and beach season has arrived. Going boating or heading to the beach? Come by and pick up sandwiches, salads or beer and wine to make your day complete. Call in your order and we’ll have it ready for you to pick up.

Tuesday – Thursday

11:00 am – 6:00 pm

Friday and Saturday

9:00 am – 6:00 pm

Sunday

9:00 am – 3;00 pm

Wine of the Month

CristalinoCristalino Brut Sparkling Wine

Cristalino Cava Brut has a bright green-gold color and shows fine bubbles. It has a pleasant nose of green apples, peaches, toast, flowers, cinnamon and herbs. Crisp and bright, dry with medium-full body, this sparkler offers rich flavors of apples, figs, lemon, roasted almonds and pie crust. It is fruit-forward and balanced, with a clean, lemony finish.
Enjoy Cristalino Cava Brut as an apéritif and with chicken salad, shellfish, paella, filet of sole and fruit desserts.

Cheese of the Month

Cheese and WineDelice de Bourgogne – Triple Cream

Delice de Bourgogne from France is a tall triple cream cow’s milk cheese that is enriched with cream. The remarkably pungent (somewhat moldy) aroma of Delice de Bourgogne belies the velvet-smooth texture and subtle taste of this cheese. Similar to the classic Brie both in appearance and texture, this sumptuous cheese delivers an extra triple-cream punch to the palate. Its outside is yellowish-white in color, with a soft, chalk-like dusty rind. The smell can be overpowering at first, but adds a playful contrast to the sweet and creamy interior. For a most memorable Delice experience, procure the freshest French baguette, slice and toast. Spread some Delice and feast on this fantastically simple treat before another hectic day commences.

Drink Suggestions: Serve with Champagne, a slightly acidic Riesling, or fruity Sauternes.

Wine Tasting

Champagne and CheeseChampagne and Chocolate!

This month we will be tasting some Champagne and Prosecco along with some fresh strawberries and chocolates.

Thursday, June 26th from 6:00 pm to 8 pm

Our wine tastings on Thursday evenings at 6:00 p.m. continue to increase in popularity. The store remains open during those hours as well.

Keep an eye out for our catering truck. We’re just putting the finishing touches on it, and any day now, you’ll start seeing it parked at key locations around Cape Ann. We’ll stock it with box lunches, prepared food and soft drinks.  If you have suggestions about where we should be, let us know.

Before we go, we can’t resist a little bragging. Duckworth’s Bistrot, the restaurant that Ken and Nicole Duckworth have at 197 East Main Street, once again has received the Zagat Guide’s highest rating for food in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Yes, it beats out all those fancy places in Boston. It’s a treasure, and we’re lucky to have it here in our town. This time of year it’s best to plan ahead and make reservations.

We’re looking forward to serving you.

Sincerely,

John Lamirande

Updated to Friday June 25th… we are all looking forward to the Big Day.

(Joe is optimistic, but Memory wants everything perfect, stop by and check it out anyway.)

Joe and Memory have done a fantastic job, and I looking forward to sitting at the piano, of course on the other side of the keys.
