The Mrs’ Pork Tenderloin With Cranberry Chutney Dinner
So Far at the Fair…..with pictures & recipes!
I could not be more proud! Not only has my girl Lil been on national TV (The Nate Berkus Show) and featured in a national magazine (Kiwi Magazine) but now she is bringing home the ribbons at the Topsfield Fair!

Over the weekend, Lil won two blue ribbons and one red second place ribbon for her desserts–and she is giving out her recipes. Her third ribbon, a red second place, was for a version of her rice pudding that she made on the Nate Berkus show last week. I am so proud of my girl!

Happy Apple Streusel Muffins–Recipe by Lily for the Topsfield Fair Muffin Contest
Streusel Topping
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons cold butter
Muffins
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup melted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 cup diced apple
1/4 cup cinnamon chips
Heat the oven to 400°F with the oven rack in middle. Put cupcake papers in 12 standard muffin cups
First, make the streusel topping:
Combine the flour brown and cinnamon in a small bowl. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces.
Combine the flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, and salt in a large bowl.
Combine the milk, melted butter, vanilla, and egg in a medium bowl. Pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture, and stir only until the flour is moistened. Gently stir in apples and cinnamon chips.
Divide the batter into prepared muffin cups, filling them about 2/3 full. Sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of streusel over each muffin.
Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center of a couple of muffins comes out dry. Cool slightly.
Makes 12 -14 muffins

Don’t Forget To Say Hi To The Tuckers Farm Family Diner Folks At Topsfield Fair
Blue Dutch Oven At Alexandra’s Bread Co
You wanna know what’s great about this blue Dutch oven that is for sale at Alexandra’s Bread Co for $22.95? Besides is nice heft and solid feel, it is not so huge that you would need to cook for an army to use it. Most Dutch ovens are huge and force you to cook huge but this one is about half the size of one you would normally see and allows you to cook a meal for 4 instead of 25. Head down to Alexandra’s. Pick up a couple of cobbles (they come out at 9:30AM) and check out all of Alexandras cool finds that she sells. I’m telling you if this bakery thing doesn’t work out for her she could easily walk right into being a buyer for a department store that wanted to add timeless houseware lines to their offerings. Guaranteed to turn an old line failing retailer into a hip timeless retailer in no time. She has a good eye. I’m just saying.
The steam in the window means there’s some baking goin’ on!

Everything you read above this line is from a post I composed yesterday before I went to the Mall with the family.
What you will see below is what I’m adding this morning at 7:14AM
We happened to go into Williams Sonoma (the Bean’s favorite store) yesterday afternoon and featured in the front of the store are these Staub Cookware Oval Ovens for get this- $200 ON SALE
I’m telling you right now- get down to Alexandra’s, buy yourself the heavy duty Blue Dutch oven for $22.95 and every time you see some dope buying a Staub Cookware $200 Oval Oven feel good about how smart you are for not getting sucked into the overpriced cookware trap.
Seafood Thowdown at the Boston Local Food Festival on Saturday
Joey,
Peter VanNess going to be the MC for the Seafood Thowdown at the Boston Local Food Festival on Saturday. It should be a lot of fun.
Come Hungry.
Let’s play a game: How many words can we throw out before you realize that you can’t miss this thing? Free. Sustainable. Local. Whole hog, whole lamb, whole goat butchering demos. Fort Point waterfront. Zero-waste. Farms. Beer. Wine. Organic. A seafood throwdown. Non-profits. Cheese-making. A band called “Squeezebox Stompers.” Yeah? Yeah.
Details: 11am-5pm, all ages, free.

Seasonal Closings
Did I already miss one last time for the fried fish with cheese at The Cupboard? Say it ain’t so. This is my shout out for request of all closings of seasonal places on Cape Ann. Post to this thread or email me and I will blog a comprehensive list.
The only three I have:
Top Dog closes Wednesday October 27 Bearskin Neck.
The Rudder, Wed, Thurs, Frid, Sat, through October 30th. (What happens then?) On the Neck, Gloucester
The Lobster Pool, Monday December 13. Halibut Point, Rockport
Of special interest is any closing extravaganza. Finish all the ice cream, eat all the fired clams from the bottom of the Frialator! With the way this weather is going I think we should postpone all  summer closings until after Santa arrives in Rockport.
Summer isn’t over until question of gender sign comes down!

Santarpios Just Got A Little Closer
Santarpios, a classic Boston Pizzeria has expanded outside its East Boston landmark location to Peabody. It is right above the Sonic on the
Northbound side or Route 1. Last weekend the family loaded up the minivan and battled Cadillacs for parking spots on their opening weekend. Luckily, we got in right before 5 pm, because when we left there was over an hour and a half wait.
There have been rumors on the opening since July. The delay was due to waiting on an oven from one of the few American manufacturers of large rotating convection ovens. I saw this thing in action it was worth the wait. When they were ready to open, they didn’t call any media outlets, they just put a sign on a utility truck that said “OPEN”.
The decor is clean and simple. The old Bennigans location without the flare. Nothing on the wall except for a few boxing photos. The bar is a family affair and everyone was smiling. The menu is the exact same as the East Boston location. Same awesome pizza and BBQ Sausage/Lamb. Of course comparisons will come to the original and of course there is only one original location. When you go you need to know that you start with a bbq offering of sausage and/or lamb and then pick your pizzas. They offer cold beer, which I have heard goes pretty well with pizza.
I commend Santarpio’s on a successful expansion and thank them for bringing their classic pizza to the North Shore. My only worry is that people will try to pack in a trip to Santarpio’s and then Sonic for the tater tots. Check out the new location and the “Food Fueds” episode coming to the Food Network on October 14th, where Santarpio’s battles another Boston legend, Pizzeria Regina.

Makin’ Rosa Rugosa Jelly For Marilyn Curcuru
Yesterday Sista Felicia, the Bean, Snoop Maddie Mad, Nephew BJ and Niece Amandacakes had a Rosa Rugosa jelly making day to support Marilyn Curcuru.
The Bean and Snoop Maddie mad Pick Rosa Rugosa Rose Hips-
Getting ready to jar the jelly-
Sharon posted this from the Gloucester Times a couple of weeks ago-
From the Times–
To the editor:
Being friends of Jim and Marilyn Curcuru for many years, we are writing to ask our community for its help.
Many of you may or may not know Jim and Marilyn, so let me tell you about them. Marilyn was stricken with multiple sclerosis more than 25 years ago. She was employed by the now Shaw’s Supermarket.
Even though Marilyn is in a wheelchair and has been for many years, she was still sitting in at Shaw’s Railroad Avenue once in awhile. She is the person you see smiling and giving out samples.
Jim had his own business, Jim’s Frame Design, and while he continued to maintain his business, he would have to leave whenever Marilyn needed help at home since she was confined to a wheelchair. No one expects such horrible circumstances, but people deal with their problems.
Then, about five years ago, Jim had a major heart attack and almost died. Working miracles, his Boston doctors were able to save him. About two weeks ago, he had more problems and was forced to close his business.
Jim now has a small part-time job and they continue to struggle, but they continue to deal with what comes their way. Life has not been easy.
Recently, they had some problems with their old wheelchair-accessible van and Jim came up with the money to fix it, only to find out that, within weeks of the work being done, the floor of the van had rotted out. No one who had repaired the van had realized that the floor was falling through.
The floor of the van cannot be repaired. They now have no vehicle, and Marilyn is not only confined to her wheelchair, but to her house, too. Local wheelchair vans are only available for doctors and or medical appointments.
How do they keep going? Being the people that they are, they won’t ask for help, but they need it — desperately. Everyone is in tough times and many are out of work. We are hoping that with donations, they will be able to acquire a used wheelchair-accessible van, even though they are very expensive. With the help of the community, we’re hoping this can be achieved.
There are many businesses and organizations here in Gloucester that help people. We are hoping that some of them will come forward and help with donations as well. If there is anyone out there who can help with even a small donation (even a dollar) or knows someone who can help with a wheelchair accessible van that could be donated, they would be helped immensely.
If anyone would like to help, please send any checks made out to Jim and Marilyn Curcuru Van Fund. Any checks should be sent c/o Rockport National Bank, 4 Parker St., Gloucester, MA, 01930.
If you only have a dollar to spare, please feel free to drop any donation off in the afternoons at STUFF, 161 Main St., where there is a cash donation set up. If you have any questions or know of a van that might be available for them, please feel free to call Louise or Joe Palazzola at 978-281-1048, or Anthony and Eleanor Curcuru at 978-281-0874. We want to thank Rockport National Bank for setting up this account for them. Any and all questions will be appreciated.

Sista Felicia thought it would be a good way to raise money by making the Rosa Rugosa Jelly (which is delicious BTW)- the same one she canned for the Topsfield Fair, and sell it to raise money for the Jim and Marilyn Curcuru Van Fund.
So here’s the deal-
You can get a jar of Sista Felicia’s Rosa Rugosa Jelly made with extra love with the help of The Bean, Snoop Maddie Mad, BJ and Amandacakes for $10 per jar. 100% of the money raised will go to the Jim and Marilyn Curcuru Van Fund. If her Rosa Rugosa Jelly wins a Blue Ribbon at Topsfield Fair the price goes up to $12 per jar, so if you let me know you want me to save you a jar before next week when the judging at the Fair is announced you can lock in at the bargain price of $10. 🙂
This is so much better than a raffle or just a straight up donation because when you think of it you definitely walk away with something! Look for Sista Felicia’s Rosa Rugosa Jelly making video Wednesday on The Gloucester Daily Times website.
Leave a comment below and let me know if you would like a jar (or three). You can pick up the jelly at Stuff 161 Main Street Gloucester MA beginning Thursday morning.
