Congratulations Lisa Clark.  You won 2 tickets to ORLEANS at Northshore Music Theatre plus 2 GMG killer mason jars.

Zip Line Kid picked the winner.  He’ll pick another winner tomorrow.  So come down to the Waterfront Festival between 9am and 6pm tomorrow and enter to win.  Remember, it’s FREE!

Chickity Check It! Dogtown Philosophy

NTNW

A new shop on Bearskin Neck is looking to promote the work of Roger Babson and the Babson Boulders located in Dogtown Commons. For those who don’t know, the 24 sayings that were carved into boulders in Dogtown during the Great Depression were Babson’s philosophy of what needed to be done to get out of the depression. With sayings such as Get a Job, Use Your Head, Never Try, Never Win, the sayings are both inspirational and sarcastic. Dogtown Philosophy is trying to get back to the basics, saying that the problems that caused the Great Depression are the same ones that put us in the recession we are in today. You can check out there store located at 64 Bearskin Neck or at www.dogtownphilosophy.com.

Big weekend starts NOW ~ Get ready to DANCE, PARTY, SHOP & WIN with this Classic, Camera-Swinging Video!

It all starts tonight with live music at 14 venues.  See the full schedule here.  Don’t worry about sleep (“I’ll sleep when I’m dead” – who said that?  Leave a comment if you know).  Get up tomorrow (Saturday) morning and go to the Rotary Pancake Breakfast — best deal in town and for a good cause.  To get you in the right spirit, I thought it would be fun to reprise Ed Collard’s classic, camera-swinging coverage from 2010 (pants, shoes, turf & all).

Once you’re full of pancakes, walk down to the Waterfront Festival (click the STOP button on the video camera before you start walking — unlike Ed).

Be sure to stop by the GMG booth where you can enter to Win 2 free tickets to ORLEANS at North Shore Music Theatre PLUS 2 Killer GMG Mason Jars of Iced Tea.

Head right from the Waterfront festival to the Block Party for an evening of al fresco dining, dancing, shopping, music, kids’ games & prizes, street performers, life-sized street chess, robot squirt gun fights & more.

Then take the Block Party inside @ 8 local clubs until the wee hours.  Check the complete live music listings for Saturday here.  You’re guaranteed to find something you like — even if you don’t like to party.

BREAKING NEWS FOR KIDS (big & little) ~ New Wacky Acts @ tomorrow’s Block Party

Tell the little and the big kids too – these whacky acts just signed on for Saturday’s Block Party!

Never Has a Cooler Buoy Been Painted By a Cooler Chick Than Lily Linquata

Here’s Lily making the delivery of my very own custom painted GMG lobster buoy.

2012-08-08 12.29.27

Does your business or organization have one of Lily’s killer buoy’s?  Did you want a decorative buoy for your home or office?  Check out Lily’s www.gloucestergoods.com and order up one or a dozen for yourself and your friends, they make killer gifts.

Don’t go showing up at that wedding shower with yet another butter dish.  I’m telling you, you don’t wanna be that person that shows up with the 17th butter dish and then have to watch the bride-to-be feign her excitement over said 17th gifted butter dish.  Show up with a killer Lily Linqs custom buoy with the bride and groom’s names on it with a anchor in the middle or a lobster or some shit like that.  They’ll love it trust me.

They’ll love it way more than that 17th gifted buttah dish I’ll tell you that and then you know what happens?  Everyone at that bridal shower talks about how thoughtful you were for getting such a unique and treasured gift.  See, that’s how it works at bridal showers.

You’re either the person bringing the kick-ass lily Linq’s Custom Buoy or you’re the stiff bringing the 17th buttah dish.

Don’t be the bearer of the 17th buttah dish.

Pizza from Mike’s Place

First, thanks to those who prayed for me this week while I was on retreat.  I got a good spiritual boost!

This evening, after my return, Fr. John Kiley (the pastor) and I decided to have pizza for dinner.  We have a sort of tradition of getting onion & roasted red pepper pizza from Sebastian’s (58 Washington Street).  However, after six phone calls I still could not get through to them, so we decided to try the same kind of pizza, but from Mike’s Place this time. I’ve read good reviews here on GMG and elsewhere, and it’s right around the corner from the rectory.

The pizza was ready on time, fresh and hot, and the staff were busy but friendly.

It tasted as good as it looked. It was especially good with a bottle of Gloucester Soda which I bought at the street bazaar.

In short, since the pizza was great, and the location is very convenient with respect to the parish rectory (and they have sufficient parking), Fr. John and I will probably start to frequent Mike’s Place more often!

Gloucester Harbor Walk Gus Foote Dedication Sunday

Tomorrow, Sunday, at noon is the dedication of the Gus Foote Park. Following the dedication, I will be giving a mini-talk about the butterfly gardens planted along the Harbor Walk. A yummy clam chowder tasting is planned, provided by the Gloucester House Restaurant. At 12:45, we’ll Walk the Walk with Mayor Kirk. The theme of Sunday’s walk is Gloucester’s maritime heritage.

Sunny skies are predicted for tomorrow–perfect weather for strolling through the gardens while listening to sea stories. I hope you’ll come join us!

~

Gus Foote, now 82 years young, is a retired Gloucester City Councilman. He represented Ward 2 for more than three decades. In 2011, Gus was reappointed by Governor Deval Patrick to serve another five-year term on the Gloucester Housing Authority. Gus Foote Image Courtesy GMG 2009

Upcycled Chairs

Friends Polly Hickey and Cheryl Davis have come up with a great idea – finding cast-off chairs on the side of the road, cleaning them up, and selling them at a reasonable price at the Farmer’s Market here in Gloucester on Thursdays. Their business, Upcycled Chairs, has already gained popularity at the Market. Several have been sold. Instead of being discarded in the trash, these chairs will have a new life. Very cool!

Bikefixed

Thanks to Big Mike’s Bike Shop and Beardman McBikeshaman (I believe that’s what he said his name was) I am back to terrorizing the potholed streets of our beloved burg. It should be noted that the bike was fixed within hours and it cost me less than buying the same parts on Amazon, and I would have had to spend time putting them all together and then bolting them onto the bike. And he oiled my brakes.

I think he might have also mentioned that he’d dipped the removable components into a vat containing active cultures of the deadly ebola virus. I was kinda distracted looking at all the cool bikes and parts they had in there, but I think he said that. Or that he’d rigged the bike with semtex plastic explosive and would detonate if tampered with. Or maybe they are having a sale on helmets. Something along those lines.

Anyhow, Big Mike’s did me solid. Thanks guys.

Jim

Baccala recipes from Sefatia Romeo and Mark McDonough at yesterday’s Harbor Walk Ribbon Cutting

Right after the ribbon cutting and before Mayor Kirk led us on the walk, I had a chance to try the salt cod, a.k.a. baccala, get a preview of the dish that is available at Latitude 43 (while supplies last) and a lesson on how to prepare baccala from Sefatia.  Enjoy!

If you listen carefully you can hear Bob Ryan (of CATA) in the background while Sefatia is talking — explaining the origin of the word “Stage” in “Stage Fort Park”.  Leave us a comment if you know why it’s called “Stage Fort Park”.

In the video, Sefatia references a cooking show she taped with Sista Felicia.  See that show in the three videos below

Tree-top Dining at the 7th Wave Restaurant

Snapshots from one of our favorite restaurants, the 7th Wave, Rockport, on Tuna Wharf. Disclaimer: Our son Alex Hauck is a chef there, nonetheless, we wouldn’t go if the food was anything but super delicious.

The atmosphere is so pleasant–relaxing, family friendly, and with lovely views all around. The wait staff is a great bunch of young college students and Elaine, the owner, always stops by to say hello. Pictured are just some of the yummy dishes from their eclectic seafood menu. We always ask what station Alex is working–sautee, grill, fry, etc. and place our orders based on what he is cooking that evening. The seafood is fried to perfection–the most beautiful golden orange brown-and simply out of this world.

Fabulous seafood medley of fresh calamari, shrimp, scallops, and clams

Mussels Fra Diavolo–and yes, the broth truly is ‘Fra Diavolo,’ or Brother Devilishly Hot! The Chef says he uses both red hot chilies and habaneros.

My kids just love it when I pull out the camera.

Food Drive and Bake Sale – St. Vincent de Paul Society

Don’t forget this note from Helen Downey:

Come join us at Shaw’s Plaza, 127 Easter Ave., Gloucester, as the members of Holy Family Parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Society conduct a “Food Drive and Bake Sale” on Saturday, August 11 from 9am to 3pm.

The Society, through dedicated volunteer efforts, services the needs of many families here on Cape Ann.  We succeed in doing this only with  donations of monetary value or food donations for our emergency pantry.

Shaw’s is a great supporter of community projects and we have been chosen to be the recipient of any profits received through their participation in this event. So come on over and have lunch at the concession or perhaps a home-baked goodie from the many delicious items made by our members.  Hope to see you there on August 11th to support our fund raising event.

If you have any questions, contact helen at 978-283-7391. Thank you for your support!

GLOUCESTER

This town’s last national burst of buzz came from the movie version of “The Perfect Storm,” in which desperate fishermen going farther and farther out in search of dwindling stocks of swordfish were swept into the abyss by a hurricane. You may soon hear about Gloucester again, as visionary leaders chart out what they hope is a perfect scenario of renewal. There are still hundreds of working fishermen here, but officials now talk of Gloucester becoming a cluster for a much broader “marine economy.” Picture an aquatic Silicon Valley — a center of research on the “wired ocean” and a workshop for entrepreneurs developing products based on discoveries from the deep.

Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk demonstrates how QR codes enable an interactive smartphoe tour along the city’s HarborWalk.

Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk demonstrates how QR codes enable an interactive smartphone tour along the city’s HarborWalk.

“This is what’s happening to the city, this is where we’re going,” vows Mayor Carolyn Kirk. “Come hell or high water, we’re going there.”

Touring the city this week, there was ample evidence that Gloucester can build on its seafaring heritage, even as it seeks to develop economic niches beyond fishing.

Gloucester HarborWalk Grand Opening Thursday!

The HarborWalk grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony with Mayor Kirk and Lieutenant Governor Timothy P. Murray is this coming Thursday, August 9th. The festivities will begin at 1 pm at The Wharf at St. Peter’s Park.

The Gloucester HarborWalk is a self-guided tour through 42 story moments granite posts. The 4-day celebration, August 9th through 12th, is devoted to the HarborWalk; each day of the event’s “Walk the Walks,” hosted by Mayor Kirk, will feature different aspects of the city’s storied maritime and cultural history.

As many of you may know I designed the horticultural master plan for the HarborWalk. The new gardens are planted with nearly 100 percent North American native wildflowers and have quickly become a pollinator’s paradise. Once fully established, the gardens will require minimal maintenance.

Sunday, August 12th, at noon, there will be a re-dedication of Gus Foote Park (now part of the HarborWalk Gardens) where I will help in giving a guided tour of the butterfly gardens. I hope to see you there!

Schedule of Events

Thursday, August 9th at 1:00pm at St. Peter’s Park. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.

Friday, August 10th, at 12:00 noon at St. Peter’s Park. Mayor’s Walk, focusing on literature and art.

Saturday, August 11th, at 10:45 at City Hall. Especially intended toward families, and featuring the works of Virginia Lee Burton.

Sunday, August 12th, at 12:00 noon at Gus Foote Park. Re-dedication of Gus Foote Park, with a focus on Gloucester’s maritime heritage. Guided tour of the  gardens.
