Everybody loves a deal.
And if there’s ever a prime opportunity to scoop one up in Massachusetts — maybe for that new couch or television you’ve been eyeing — that moment is coming soon.
For one weekend in August, the state’s sales tax holiday returns, giving shoppers a chance to make some big-ticket purchases without fretting over the Commonwealth’s usual 6.25 percent cut of the bill.
Here’s everything to know about the two-day, tax-free affair, including when it is and how you can use it.
When is the tax holiday?
This year’s holiday is set for Aug. 17 and 18.
Rotary Breakfast, Waterfront Festival, Marshall Farm Stand 50th anniversary party and kayaking in the fog made for a fun day.
Scenes from last Thursday’s public display and discussion about proposed plans to Stage Fort Park, held during the Cape Ann Farmers Market.
The plans are similar to ones you may have seen over the last year, though it is always something else to inspect them in person, walk through a site, and hear feedback, input and questions. I’ve considered the plans before, but had not realized that the parking lot was going to be shifted and expanded double wide at the top abutting the dog park. Some neighbors liked the idea of an altered viewshed, others not so much. People talked about cleaning up the broken glass, trash management (great praise for DPW dealing with this every day), repairing the stone steps, the beach, bringing back some of the fanciful playground elements, trees and maintenance. There was pretty much universal praise for the Rotary and the farmers market. I was told there was mention of altering the Tablet Rock plaque, which does not need it, though I did not hear any. I was there for the duration of the meeting and even a tad beyond as Steve Winslow was kind enough to lead a tour into the field and perimeter afterwards. A great challenge is maintaining the meadow expanse which many feel is ragged around the gazebo while serving crowds. The proposed plans center about the gazebo and parking lot, and did not cover the area along the harbor (across from the cupboard) where the annual Waterfront music festivals occur as well as elements listed above.
In case you missed the Mayor’s Facebook page, here is a summation from the evening and invitation to join in.

Pictures From Around The Waterfront Festival Taken By Amanda
It all starts tonight with live music at 14 venues. See the full schedule here. Don’t worry about sleep (“I’ll sleep when I’m dead” – who said that? Leave a comment if you know). Get up tomorrow (Saturday) morning and go to the Rotary Pancake Breakfast — best deal in town and for a good cause. To get you in the right spirit, I thought it would be fun to reprise Ed Collard’s classic, camera-swinging coverage from 2010 (pants, shoes, turf & all).
Once you’re full of pancakes, walk down to the Waterfront Festival (click the STOP button on the video camera before you start walking — unlike Ed).
Be sure to stop by the GMG booth where you can enter to Win 2 free tickets to ORLEANS at North Shore Music Theatre PLUS 2 Killer GMG Mason Jars of Iced Tea.
Head right from the Waterfront festival to the Block Party for an evening of al fresco dining, dancing, shopping, music, kids’ games & prizes, street performers, life-sized street chess, robot squirt gun fights & more.
Then take the Block Party inside @ 8 local clubs until the wee hours. Check the complete live music listings for Saturday here. You’re guaranteed to find something you like — even if you don’t like to party.
I thought you might like to post these "creature" photos from Stage Fort Park that I took at the Waterfront Festival yesterday. The creature was the hit of the festival.
Ed Collard flashes some fancy camera work in this piece.
Let’s just say that the on/off button and Ed are not seeing eye to eye and leave it at that. (anyone for some coverage of the turf conditions at Stage Fort?)
I’d like to propose a new GMG drinking game. Whenever Ed says the word “fantastic” everybody chugs!
