Local Newspapers In The Digital Age

Had a conversation with Jack Morris, the editor of North Shore Magazine yesterday about blogging and the newspaper business.  Jack worked for Fox as their web manager for a while and now is the man at North Shore Magazine.  Look for one of my photos in the next edition.

We spoke for a while about newspapers and what way it seems they are evolving in the digital age- agreeing that the newspapers that ignore or do  not embrace social online networking to it’s fullest extent are doomed to fail.

People in conversations weekly tell me that they love GMG and that I should start an alternative to the Times.  Firstly I am flattered by the suggestion but in reality what we do on GMG is nothing like what goes into putting out a daily newspaper and the local newspapers are crucial to keep going and support.

See, we get to choose  fun stuff and things that matter to us to put into GMG.  We don’t have to report on the puss.  We don’t have to attend tax classification hearings or talk about the police or fire department negotiations with the city.  We don’t have to do the obituaries or stories about Marshalls coming to town.  We do stuff because we love it or we think you our readers will love it.  It’s similar but a different animal what we do and what the newspaper does.

My grammar sucks and if it weren’t for spellcheck my spelling really sucks.  I make mistakes and sometimes don’t bother to correct them because I know my point got across.  If the local paper makes spelling or grammar mistakes people get all up in their shit.

I guess if you are a paid journalist you should be able to use proper punctuation but I never claimed to be a journalist.  I’m a blogger and my job as a blogger is to keep you entertained and to fill my creative needs. I think for the most part we accomplish that here at GMG but please don’t confuse us for a newspaper or take our local newspapers for granted.  They keep honest politicians honest and report on the stuff that would slip between the cracks because bloggers would never bother with the little stories and the police notes and all the comprehensive stuff that makes up our newspapers.

You just gotta love all the young creative people in our community.  We are so incredibly blessed to have the creative scene that we do.  People like Emile, Mike and Tom making short films, the gang at The Hive, the artists recording music downstairs at CABI just to name a tiny few.  Then you have the photographers like Mark Teiwes and Ernie doing their edgy stuff.  We have Rob Newton who is fully committed to bring us great movies at Cape Ann Community Cinema, the list goes on and on and on….

Keep it fresh y’all                   and thank you.

Rebranding Gloucester

It’s been too long since I updated this blog but life has been busy. Much to my surprise (and delight) the knitting book launched in March has been a big success and I’m very, very happy to say I haven’t blogged because I’ve been busy with that. But it’s time to post about my latest project.

The City of Gloucester, which I love, is going though tough economic times, like many of us. One of the hardest decisions the mayor had to make was to eliminate the position of Director of Tourism. This left the tourism council with a tough problem, how to maintain their web site. They asked for volunteers and I raised my hand.

As I familiarized myself with the web site I saw a lot of problems with it. It is loaded with good information but is not particularly attractive (it suffered from too many cooks…), loads slowly and is not particularly enticing.

Because I love Gloucester and all it has to offer I contacted two of my fellow lovers of Gloucester, Jay Albert, the photographer who maintains Cape Ann Images, and Joe Ciaramitaro, of Good Morning Gloucester. “Let’s make an awesome web site that really promotes our city,” I said. “Count me in,” they said. Thus began the redesign to show the world the Gloucester we love in the hopes it will entice people to come here.

Once we had the site underway, Jay and Joe supplying the images for my design and organization, we approached the Tourism Council. The response was very positive. This is the new home page which features audio and a Flash video you have to visit the site to see.

Many of the pages have been completed but we still have work to do. But the main objectives are to 1.) show the many amenities Gloucester has to offer including activities, culture, dining, shopping, etc. and 2.) to provide as much information as possible that will allow those planning their vacations to consider Gloucester as a desirable destination.

As a further enhancement we are adding a new, sexier URL: www.iLoveGloucester.com. Right now it points to the test server but eventually it will be attached to the actual site along with the exisiting URL.

So, we have work to do but progress has been exciting. We have a fantastic product in our beloved city, packaging and marketing it is the challenge. Take a look at the site and let us know how we’re doing: iLoveGloucester.com

It should be noted that Kathleen did a vast majority of the work on the site.  She is incredible and gives a ton of her time and energy into promoting the city we love.

PLAYING FRIDAY, JULY 17 TO THURSDAY, JULY 23 @ 7:30PM NIGHTLY

OUTRAGE
From Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker Kirby Dick (“This Film Is Not Yet Rated”) comes Outrage, a searing indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians with appalling gay rights voting records who actively campaign against the LGBT community they covertly belong to. Boldly revealing the hidden lives of some of the United States’ most powerful policymakers, Outrage takes a comprehensive look at the harm they’ve inflicted on millions of Americans, and examines the media’s complicity in keeping their secrets. The film probes deeply into the psychology of this double lifestyle, the ethics of outing closeted politicians, the double standards that the media upholds in its coverage of the sex lives of gay public figures, and much more.

“A powerful, disturbing and significant film.” –Kenneth Turan, LA Times

The Camera Is Going

The camera that brought you 95% of the pictures and 99% of the videos that I’ve posted over the past year and a half is going to a good home.

FOB (friend of the blog) and all around great egg Brenda Malloy will be putting it to good use.

I’m feeling sort of sad about it because it has taken so many pictures of beautiful things, people, food and Gloucester scenes and has been incredibly reliable but an opportunity to make the blog better has come up and along with it a chance to get a big boy camera for not a whole lot of dough.

I resisted buying a good dslr like good buddy Jay of  Cape Ann Images has because I figured that down the dock it would simply get demolished but since the Mrs already has a zoom lens and regular lens for her nikon d40 I figured that if I sold my precious Sony H3 (the camera used in most of my pics over the past year and a half and combined that with the money I got from a few pictures that sold at The Cormorant Shop recently, I could justify the expenditure.

So my faithful camera that has taken so many pictures and been with me all along is going bye-bye as soon as the new one shows up in the mail.

For anyone that wants a reliable camera that has a  solid zoom, is pocketable and takes decent video I highly recommend this camera- Sony DSC H3.  It was a joy to work with.

The pictures taken with this camera have been featured in countless publications, visitors guides, television programs such as NECN, WBZ, and WCVB, magazines, the Lobster Institute educational materials, ad campaigns for many local businesses, Flower Box Competitions, promotions for many local charities, art scenes, fundraisers, and more.

For an example of what pictures were taken with my baby click here, here, here, here, and here.
