The Gloucester UK/US Connection

From Linn Parisi-

Hi Joey,

Got this alert from the Gloucestershire UK destination marketing organization executive director whom I’ve been communicating with re: the Gloucester UK/US connection.

The article was in their local paper’s equivalent of the GD Times’ Saturday “Talk of the Times”, on 1/4/10.
Very cool for Gloucester US, the lobster pot tree and Art Haven buoys!
With Art Haven’s Buoy Auction coming up, I thought it would be a good time to share the article and to let everyone know how far reaching the news about the lobster pot tree and Gloucester extends.

We’re all giving it our best shot at getting Gloucester out there, right?!

Thanks again for all you do-      Linn

Castries Fishermen’s Pier

There was a rather large woman cooking something in a pot off to the right in the picture.  A fire had been set using whatever scraps of wood that were around and the pot set right atop that fire.  Under the fishing boats which were hailed up out omn the dock there were many small dogs playing with each other and some roosters roaming around.  Obviously getting the dogs neutered was not high on the priority list.

Just across the bay were two cruise ships.  Such a striking contrast between the big hulking and modern cruise ships and the very basic fishing boats.

At The Fishermen’s Dock- Port Of Castries St Lucia

Whenever we go on vacation I try to go to the fishing villiages to see the way different ports operate and how different fishermen fish.  In the Port of Catsries they operate their fishing port in the shadow of a huge cruise ship industry.   There were 2-3 cruise ships in port and they can accomodate up to five in the harbor of Castries.

Walking down the fishermen’s pier they do things the same way they’ve done them for generations.  The men were filleting baby yellowfin and ballyhoo.  Alongside the pier there was the Fisheries administration building and a small fish market.

Sean Burn’s Lobsterboat The Four Sisters Prepares To Offload

It was so cold that the plug which drains his lobster tank was frozen solid.  He had to take a layer of lobsters out of the tank and then dip a five gallon bucket in to take out some water and then take more lobsters out followed by bailing out more water til the tank was empty.  The extreme cold makes

Exhibit at Cape Ann Museum

Here’s just one of the number of incredible exhibits to see at the Cape Ann Museum.  This is what the flake yards looked like.  The cod would be split open , de-boned and laid out in triangle shapes flat on drying racks.

When I was about 12 years old at our dock we were splitting and salting cod for a Norwegian company.  Frank and my job was to pull off any globules of blood or liver after the cod got split and de-boned.  We had a big stainless steel tank and the triangular shaped cod would come down the conveyor to us and plop into the stainless tank.  Usually up around the nape of the cod rack there would be a liver still attached that we would need to rip off and give the rack a good washing to get nice and white before salting.

After that we would lay the whale cod split flat onto pallets, pour the salt over them and stack them up.  I can remember the whole cooler being stacked up with pallet upon pallet of salted cod waiting to dry and then for the trailer truck to pick them up.

Buoy Painting At Art Haven pics By Thom Falzorano

I can’t even believe how many events went down yesterday.  How much fun and community involvement and volunteerism went into making it such an incredible day for Gloucester folks to enjoy.

There is so much to cover between the start of the day at City Hall with the Docksiders, Gingerbread House Competition, and hanging out with the Disney Characters.

Then off to Art Haven for Buoy Painting and Ice Sculpting.

Then to watch the star and buoys get placed upon the lobster trap tree.

Quick lunch at Espresso ($7.95 Chicken Marsala rocked).

Hop over to the Cape Ann Museum for a children’s Christmas caroling concert with FOB Mikayla Ciolino.

Then back to City Hall for Christmas play.

To Pleasant St Tea and Coffee Co for killer hot chocolate and a fatastic artisan show.

A quick stroll down Main St to catch up with Janice Lufkin Shea and then back to the homestead.

If you don’t see your pic today  it’s only because there is so much content we will be releasing it over the next few days.  Everything is getting posted though- fear not.
