Our Lady of Good Voyage Carillon Bells are home

Thanks to Linn Parisi for the tip-

The church’s 31 bells were cast by the Taylor Bell Foundry in England and installed during the summer of 1922, and restored by Meek, Wilson & Company.

Bill Meeks was on site directing the operations, photo of him strapping a Bell.

Each bell has a Saints Name in Portuguese, and a name of a person.  There is a story for each bell, I am sure.  The first Reverend, a Captain, and A. Piatt Andrew are the names on the bells shown.  On A. Piatt Andrew’s bell is the inscription in Portuguese “The Heart of Jesus”, as he was instrumental in getting the bells brought to the church in 1922.

An elderly man stood watching them being re-installed, he said to me “I am so glad they are back, I thought I would never hear them ring again, but my prayers were answered.”

What to do Today

Today’s a great day to tour the Art Gallery’s on Cape Ann. What else is there to do on a warm Drizzly, Foggy almost Summer Day? Boating, Beach, Cookouts?   Maybe Next weekend.

Take a walk thru Downtown Gloucester, Rockport, Rocky Neck and check out all the talented  Cape Ann artists.

Go visit a gallery today, take some pictures and send them in to GMG to be posted.

I stole this idea from deb Clarke. My reflection in John Nesta Gallery's window

Copper Paint Factory – Restoration Progress

The work has started, A quick walk through indicated the progress.

An environmental barrier in the water, the walk-thru has been removed; paint scraping has started in one room, and dismantling of old interior walls.

Some photos show the bright sunlight coming thru small holes in the walls and the roof.

Work In Progress for the future home of Ocean Alliance.

Stay tuned for more progress on GoodMorningGloucester and enjoy the slide show with GMG exclusive photos.

Heather Atwood has been looking for a lead for her upcoming story which you will be able to read in her Wednesday Column in The Gloucester Daily Times.  So to help her sound like she somewhat knows what she’s talking about I was digging through the archives and found these posts from 2008 and sooner that many of our readers probably missed but are essential if you want to understand how fresh fish is distributed in Gloucester in modern times

This Is Why You Don’t Buy Fish Anywhere But A Dedicated Fish Market Or Dock

I just took this picture yesterday at a “wholesale club”

Do you know what to look for when you are buying fish?  Here’s a quick tip- If there is any hint of grey or brown on your fish DONT BUY IT!!!!!!!!

The manager of the seafood section in this place should be fired for letting this rotten crap sit on it’s shelves but I routinely see old grey rotten fillets at supermarkets and superstores.

Here’s an article on how to buy fresh fish in case you want to know what to look for

Here’s a link to video’s and pictures of how fresh fish gets handled and distributed locally in Gloucester

A couple of years ago I was in the supermarket and ran into my wife’s aunt- the sweetest kind of lady you’d ever want to meet.  She told me she was going to buy some haddock there.  I told her that if she needs some fresh fish to let me know and I’d bring her some home from one of the places I get my fish here in town knowing that what she would be buying at the supermarket would probably be inferior to the primo fish you can get here in Gloucester.  I kept shopping and on my way down the aisle toward the back of the store I swung by the fish case to see what the fish looked like and to my horror the haddock fillets in the case were absolutely grey with a hint of green and the fillets were also falling apart with no firmness to them at all.

I immediately turned and ran to the front of the store to find my wife’s aunt to stop her from purchasing the rotten fillets.  I begged her to not buy that fish to feed her family and promised to bring her some fish from G-Town.  She honestly didn’t even know any better and told me she had been buying her fish there for years.  I wonder how many other people have no idea what to look for when they buy fish but just remember one thing if nothing else- there shouldn’t be any grey or brown color to your fillet.  If there is any blood it should be bright red.  Would you buy a piece of steak at the grocery store that was grey and not red?

Notice In the picture below how there is no firmness to the fillet, the lines in the fillets aren’t crisp and they are all just squiggily and mushy?-

Good Morning Gloucester in Wikipedia!

image

After GMG got a Facebook page I thought there was something missing. Good Morning Gloucester started as a way for Joey to post photos of his favorite fishing city at dawn but it’s become much more than that. A resource to the community and really the place to go if you want up-to-date information on a wide spectrum of current information about Cape Ann. It’s been written up in area newspapers and magazines, won awards, and broken exclusive stories.

All of those things add up to a place that passes the Wikipedia notability requirement. So yesterday I thought I would take an hour and write a wiki page for GMG. Once I started I quickly realized how much GMG has done in the few short years existence and getting a rough draft took more than that hour. But as a first shot I think I got the highlights of the GMG story. Wikipedia wants "encyclopedic, only information that can be confirmed and referenced, no frivolity allowed". That was difficult trying to get the essence of GMG in dry terse format. Here is my first try. As I go down the list of repeating themes I realize all the stuff I forgot. "Cape Ann Sports Coverage", "Rosa Rugosa!", "WhaZat?". Luckily Wiki is a completely malleable device that can be added to at any time. While I am adding those if you think of something I missed just send me an email or add it yourself.

So what am I talking about? Go to Wikipedia and search on "Good Morning Gloucester" or to get there faster just google "wiki gmg" then select Good Morning Gloucester from the list. Or click here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Morning_Gloucester

You might find it a handy place to visit if you need a quick link to the Block Party dates, or Fiesta, or to local town official web sites.
