Jesse Cook Last Night at the Wilbur!

On a whim, and for no particular event, birthday, or anniversary celebration, I purchased tickets to take my guitar-playing husband, Tom, to hear the mesmerizing, evocative, and GORGEOUS music of Jesse Cook and Company. He loved it and I am a huge fan now, too.  On stage last night, Cook announced that they are returning to Boston this summer to play at Copley Square and I hope to find out more about this upcoming performance.

Cook is thought to be the most influential figure in nuevo flamenco guitar and his music is richly infused by many forms of music from around the world including Egyptian, Armenian, and American jazz and blues.

As they did in this live performance at the Rose Theatre, Jesse and the band came into the audience last night at the Wilbur to perform their second encore.

Gollum says Hobbit House Studio is Preciousssss

I wanted to come up with something new for Hobbit House Studio.  I thought Gollum and his “precious” was appropriate.  You have to know J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” to appreciate.  Is it too over the top?

Elynn Kroger and John Nesta are also usually open on the weekends (and during the week too).  The Rudder has reopened, and The Studio should be opening soon.  In a minute, all of Rocky Neck will be happening again.

Submission fee only $20 for five images

Open to all Rocky Neck Art Colony artist members (if you’re not a member you can join online here).

All media including painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, collage, clay, jewelry, glass,
wood, fiber and sculpture. (No video or installations.)

Online entires only, submission dates : April 1 to April 22, 2014.

Spring Art Show

The Magnolia Historical Society Art was a great success. Wonderful artists, food, thanks to Classic Cooks and the artists and visitors. There were over 500 visitors during the weekend. Here are a couple of photos.

During the Art Sale at the Magnolia Historical Society last weekend, a Magnolia resident came in with an original coat hanger from the hotel. The following is photo plus a GMG post from a couple of years ago.
Memories Of The Oceanside Hotel, Magnolia MA In 1931 From George Krewson III.  My Dad purchased the Oceanside Hotel at Magnolia in 1931. I was 6 at the time. He kept it until 1946. Dad had no idea how to operate a hotel, having most previous experience in the building business. When the 1929 depression hit he was out of building and just happened to acquire the Oceanside by what he called “trading cats for dogs.” He and Mom learned quickly, and within a few years a guest suggested that they journey down to Thomasville, GA and have a look a winter resort inn there. They liked what they saw and purchased the inn. Each year for the next 11 years they thrived on the resort hotel business–the Oceanside at Magnolia in the summer, and the Three Toms Inn at Thomasville in the winter, Needless to say I cam to really love growing up in the business. Then came WW II and changes in all family’s lives.

Magnolia and the Oceanside, in particular, will always remain as a fond memory.

Two Great Openings

MHS spring art show opening

The Opening Reception for the Magnolia Historical Society Spring Art Show and Sale last evening was a great event with a tremendous turnout, amazing art, great food, in a wonderful space.  If you didn’t get there last night or today, you can still make it over tomorrow from noon to 4:00 – 46 Magnolia Ave.

Another great opening was this morning’s opening of Sailor Stan’s Restaurant at 1 Wonson Street on Rocky Neck.  Stan’s will be open weekend from 7:30 until noon, with more open days as weather and season dictates.  Stop by for breakfast tomorrow – let Sue serve you with a smile after Karen and Wayne create something great for you – and then head over to Magnolia to see the Spring Art Show.

Mikey Wins Plastic Head on Small Animal Photo Contest!

That is an actual Cape Ann Grey Squirrel wearing a plastic horse head. No details but I have a feeling there is some Gloucester Market Basket Jiff Peanut Butter inside that squirrel head.

Smuckers Grape jam would be nice. With a name like Smuckers, it’s got to be good for a squirrel.

Contest rules state that entries had to be photographed in March and sent in on April 1st. So Mikey wins first second and third place. That makes three Rubber Ducks which Mikey can pick up down at Joey’s Dock or at the next GMG Mug Up.

If there are any late entries there might be consolation prizes.
