Since the first announcement, we now have 10 younger Gloucester artists signed up for the inaugural Thanksgiving Break POP UP ART FAIR on November 28, 2015 at the Hive from 4-8pm.
So far that’s representation from GHS alumni years 2006, 2007, 2011, 2012, and 2015. Pretty good so far!
We hope more artists will sign up and can’t wait to see what they do. Spread the word! Contact Pauline at paulinebresnahan@hotmail.com to add your name to the growing list of exhibitors. We are looking for artists working with any media and/or creative service. Writers, musicians, documentarians, performers, printmakers—who is out there?

Where the Sidewalk Begins- Walk this way again Railroad Ave
Hi Joey,
A sidewalk returns to Railroad Avenue. Some call it place making or Smart Growth. I say sometimes it’s nice to turn back time. Look at the old postcard image. We are lucky to have some of the same wide streets. Clean sidewalks – they’re great for residents. Great for commuters. Easier for families. Thank you DPW! It looks beautiful. I hope it inspires Shaws to match it up on the other side.
Bonus: It’s easier than ever to #strideby the Jeff Weaver mural at Ben’s Wallpaper and Paint and have a closer look. That mural changes now and again.

This self-guided tour along the scenic coastline of Gloucester and Rockport presents a unique opportunity to meet 26 professional artists in 23 studios and see their work in the setting in which it was created. The work represented includes: pottery, painting, sculpture, photography, mosaics, fiber art and jewelry. Several of the artists will be demonstrating their working process during the tours. Brochures with route maps will be available at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, the Rockport Information Booth on Rte. 127, on the Cape Ann Artisans web site and at each of the artisans — or download from capeannartisans.com. A bright magenta Studio Tour banner will mark each location. Many studios are open year round.

This thing is practically a fossil, covered in dust, with no identifying marks on it that I can find except a possible faded British flag.
Someone told me that it was not worth much, it was just a decorative piece, but I want to make sure before it goes in the yard sale bin.

HarborWalk update few new signs replaced and repaired

Hi Joey
News from the Gloucester HarborWalk. Over the last couple of days, you may have noticed that some of the permanent granite markers for the HarborWalk trail were shrouded. Replacement signs were required for some of the plaques. As with the original installation back in July 2012, new signs need a day or so to cure before they’re securely installed, hence the black plastic wrap. Sometime this morning they’ll all be unwrapped.
For the longest time there was really just one damaged sign, the map atop the Birdseye marker. It’s likely that one was yanked off, vandalized. The only one! I think that’s remarkable. Also, none of the signs were damaged by weather or general wear and tear. A couple had dramatic demises- backed into by a semi-truck, things like that. The rest suffered accidents similar to fences and curbs this past winter: snow removal required getting to places off the beaten track. A couple of signs we updated at the same time as the damaged ones. For instance the whale marker by Washington and Main had an illustration that was printed in reverse. We note changes over time. The raised symbols that people can trace and collect were installed two ways, both accepted practice and tested before. The one that seemed on paper to be the best process turned out not to be.
We’re pleased the signs are ready for Trails and Sails this weekend, Cyclocross and student field trips this fall. And for all the walkers. Currently there is one sign with some damage, the marker for Fitz Hugh Lane. If you notice other problems along the HarborWalk anytime, please email friends of the HarborWalk gharborwalk@gmail.com.

Today is the 123rd anniversary of James Merry’s unfortunate encounter with a neighbor’s bull, Jack. It is recounted in Charles Olson’s renowned poem and is permanently memorialized in Dogtown, where it all occurred.

My Monarch Butterfly Film at the Leonardo Museum in Utah!

New public art: LOOK UP downtown! Ken Riaf’s Pleasant & Main ARTISPHERE sign, last chance to see group show at Trident, wall mural on Parsons HarborWalk

Look up downtown if you haven’t yet seen the wonderful Pleasant & Main ARTISPHERE sign designed and project-boosted by artist and dealer, Ken Riaf. Then head on into his Jeffrey Marshall exhibit Law & Water Gallery.
I bet you’ve seen that Ed Touchette painting catching your eye through Trident’s window—last days to see the group exhibit at Trident Gallery. Just one week away from Ed Touchette’s solo exhibit at Trident. East Gloucester and Veterans School parents please get ready to bring your kids to see his exhibit. East Gloucester kids can find an Mr. Touchette throwback tucked away on East Main. Here’s a snapshot – try and find it.
Pass through Parsons down to Rogers or up to Main to see the progress of the artists of Art Haven/Hive. Their wall mural along a private building of Parsons Street is coming along and their depiction of Man at the Wheel is filling in…check it out! We have cleaned and scrubbed out graffiti on many walls, more than once, and are happy to see new public art added alongside the temporary FISH NET street mural and Dress Code’s.
I’m not sure what artist, Bob Stephenson, would have thought of the latest mural, but I wish he could have seen it. I do know he liked the Calderwood Fish Net mural and was grateful to have the graffiti painted out, the lights installed and anytime we swept and weeded.
Special thanks this week to the folks with Dan Leaman Landscaping and Maintenance Corp for extra clean up and weeding along Parsons Street.

At first sight, Leo Vitale finds the panel where his Dad’s boat is featured in a gorgeous Paul Frontiero photograph. His cousin and sisters join in.
Joey Ciaramitaro, Vito Giacalone, Mark McDonough, and Peter Prybot were the original authors of this outdoor display, before it was expanded and updated. The exhibit was restored because the original faded. Artists generously granted reproduction permission of their work. Go see their art! Look for Joey Ciaramitaro, Paul Frontiero, Martin Luster and Brenda Guiled. Individuals and organizations were generous too. More on this later…

Unveiling of Ken Knowles’ “Schooner Race”
Pictures from last nights’ reception at Bank Gloucester for the unveiling of renowned artist Ken Knowles painting “Schooner Race” commissioned by Bank Gloucester. A smaller version of the painting was auctioned off by auctioneer Senator Tarr (clearly his second calling!) with proceeds donated to Wellspring.
