Morning of Blackburn Challenge Breast Clouds

The morning of the Blackburn Challenge contestants and viewers of the race noticed some pretty weird clouds. Hard to capture in a camera, they looked a little like this photo taken from the wiki page describing mammatus clouds. Terry Weber posted at GMG about these mysterious clouds here.

“Mammatus” from the latin mamma for breast or udders. On race day the clouds were much larger in the breast category with cleavage compressed as small indentions. A cold front comes in, some wind shear occurs, and these large lumpy clouds start dropping from the sky.

Some clouds have a silver lining, on Cape Ann they sometimes appear to be double D cup.

Camilla MacFadyen: The White-Ellery Farm Project

COMMUNITY CELEBRATION and ART INSTALLATION
Camilla MacFadyen: The White-Ellery Farm Project

Saturday, August 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

245 Washington Street, Gloucester, MA

a42

"… have you noticed on the pole on the corner of your house a big red mark? Well that is a sign that ‘human beings live here’ and I remember that no one went from our door hungry."

From the diary of Ida Beaman Falk, 1892-197?

The White Ellery Farm Project is a collaborative piece about history, community and our agrarian roots. It is an art/history "happening", gathering artists and farmers together to bring spirit and community back to the old farm. Join friends and neighbors for a community pot luck with food given by the plentiful home gardens of Cape Ann. If possible, bring an old family recipe or a salad from your garden to share. Take this opportunity to sit with and meet the people in your community and learn about this precious historic farm.

Inside the historic house, Camilla MacFadyen will show her large collograph printed silk landscapes along with an exhibit of photographs of the old farm and an audio diary. Shep Abbott’s film More precious than Gold, a historical documentary on the early settlers of Cape Ann, will play continuously throughout the day. Outside, there will be a small Farmers Market with goods and produce for sale from local farms including the Alprilla Farm in Essex, and the Riverdale Youth Garden in Gloucester.

Gloucester Water Taxi – 1900 Style

Gloucester Harbor, circa 1900 Russell Robins/©Fredrik D. Bodin
Ten years ago a woman came into my gallery with fourteen 4×5 inch glass negatives that she found in the attic, and was going to sell them in her yard sale. They were in good condition, and all were harbor scenes. The only information she could give me was the photographer’s name: Russell Robins, and that he may have worked for Gorton’s Seafood. I bought them for much more than a yard sale price. As it turned out, they were all of Gloucester’s working harbor.
This photograph shows how busy the harbor was, with motor, sail, and rowing boats. The man rowing into the picture on the left is wearing a derby and looks like a businessman. He could be on his way to check out a fishing schooner’s catch and negotiate a price. Behind him are two schooners and the tug Startle. The distant shoreline is East Gloucester, and Rocky Neck is on the right. Over time, I realized that people in the fishing industry commuted by boat, unless a ship was tied up at the dock. Hundreds of people, including fishermen, shipwrights, fish company agents, provisioners, and owners, would row out to conduct the fishery’s business. And that’s probably why Russell Robins was out there too– with his camera.

Here & Now Sunday July 17th at The Sargent House Museum

‘HERE & NOW’ SERIES BRINGS ARTISTS TO HISTORIC SITE

Here & Now: Contemporary Artists Working in The Sargent House Museum Garden

Launches this Sunday with artist Kathy Gentile Roberts

Here & Now was conceived as a means to revitalize the 1782 Sargent House and energize the under-utilized Sargent House Museum garden. The garden’s tiers, which were added to the site in 1925 by preservation architect Joseph Everett Chandler, create unique spaces for artists to set up and find inspiration in the garden. Known for restorations at the House of the Seven Gables and the Paul Revere House, Chandler made various alterations to the historic site and grounds.

Built in 1782 for Judith Sargent Murray—an early feminist writer, philosopher, and social activist, the Sargent House is a fine example of high-style Georgian domestic architecture, enlarged during the Federal period, and converted into a museum during the height of the Colonial Revival.

There are still opportunities available for artists to participate in the Here & Now series. Interested artists should contact Site Manager Kate Laurel Burgess-Mac Intosh at kburgess1@mac.com or by calling 978-412-5290.

Upcoming Artists in the Here & Now Series

July 31: Kathryn Gentile Roberts

August 7: Mary Rhinelander McCarl

August 14: Dorothy Englander

Summer Artist Series

Paintings by Zygmund Jankowski through August 2

Rocky Neck Gallery, 53 Rocky Neck Ave.

Zyg Jankowski
Still Life, Watercolor by Zygmund Jankowski

The Rocky Neck Gallery’s Summer Artist Series continues with "Zyg’s Expression,"watercolors and oils by the late Zygmond Jankowski.

Jankowski opened a summer gallery on Rocky Neck in 1964 (at 5 Madfish Wharf, now Gallery Five and most recently Eugene Quinn gallery) and moved to Gloucester permanently in the 1970s. He taught at various universities, art associations and at home in his studio. Ranging from abstract to more realist impressionistic and expressive oil paintings, water colors, and mixed media on paper, his works burst with color. Today his paintings are included in major corporate, museum, and private collections throughout the country and in Europe, including the Cape Ann Museum and the Charles Demuth Museum in Pennsylvania. He has won numerous prizes in juried shows and in 2007 had a one-man show at the Cape Ann Museum. The Rockport Art Association honored his memory with a solo show in 2010.

Born in South Bend, Indiana in 1925, he studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts where he was taught by Victor DeWilde, George Post and Otis Oldfield. Throughout his career Jankowski painted various interpretations of certain themes, each time emphasizing a different element, such as rhythm, space, shape, and color. "You stand as referee between the scene, your emotion and analysis. Your goal is to experience a feeling of excitement for the first stroke to the last." He also said of his work, "These are paintings, NOT pictures. Cameras take pictures.

Summer Artist Series

August 3-16: Slipping the Knot, watermedia paintings by Martha Wakefield

RECEPTION: SAT, August 6, 5-8pm, Gallery Talk, 7pm

Martha Wakefield, Slip 2
Slip# 2, watermedia by Martha Wakefield

This body of work is an exploration of loss—of love that once was vibrant has slipped away. To denote this spirited soul I am utilizing a slip—an article of clothing that conveys intimacy with the wearer. A slip can be utilitarian or sensual, revealing the beauty of the female form without portraying nakedness. It has an intimate relationship with the wearer acting as a second skin but also acts as a protective or proper barrier to the other influences. I am using color, shape, line and layering to convey a sense of someone wearing, moving, and living in such a sheer skin of fabric—yet one who remains hidden from our view. The garment holds the memory of a loved one; we sense a presence though in truth she has slipped away from the knot of life and family. All that remains is the clothes.

Martha Wakefield, a former fashion executive, is a visual artist working in watercolors, acrylics and oils. She is a juried member of the Cambridge Art Association and the Rhode Island Watercolor Society. Martha has studied with Wolf Kahn, Stuart Shils and William Lawrence. Her work has been accepted into numerous juried shows and is in many private collections in United States and Canada. Her paintings have been featured in the Fall/Winter 2010 issue of Wild Apples: a Journal of Nature, Art, and Inquiry, and The Palette Magazine where she is a staff writer. A juried member of the Rocky Neck Gallery of Gloucester, she is also is represented by the Hope Gallery of Bristol, Rhode Island.

The public is invited to a Reception and Artist Talk on Saturday, August 6 from 5 to 8pm. Martha will give a gallery talk at 7pm.

Happy Birthday, Jackie!

Jackie and John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Jr. ©Fredrik D. Bodin
In the 1980’s, Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government hired me to photograph people and events in their brand new building near Harvard Square. This day’s event was the dedication of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Park, which is between the academic building and Memorial Drive and the Charles River. Among the guests of honor were Jackie, Caroline, John, Joe, and Ted Kennedy; Governor Michael Dukakis, and Boston Mayor Ray Flynn.
That evening the Kennedy School hosted a rooftop cocktail party for faculty, staff, and the Kennedys. One thing I’ll always remember is how elegant and graceful Jackie was. Her handshake and comments to everyone, from the secretary to the college president, were warm and genuine. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was born on July 28th, 1929 (July 28th is my birthday too). Happy birthday Jackie.
