Eoin Vincent Show AT RAA

COASTLINE – The New Works of Eoin Vincent

COASTLINE is the newest collection of photographs by Cape Ann Photographer Eoin Vincent. "I have been photographing the New England coast for a long time. This most recent series of images came together as I challenged myself to look deeper at my surroundings.”

After the completion of his EYES OF TANZANIA project, Vincent notes that his camera stayed in its camera bag for a long time. At that point he knew he needed to commit to himself to take a photo everyday. This in turn became his blog CIRCADIAN TRANSPARENCY that can be found at eoinvincent.com. He was able to post 240 photos in 365 days but regretfully soon after the first year his blogs database “blew up” and he had to start all over again.

During the process of trying to shoot every day he noticed that the images brought him back to his home on the coast of Cape Ann and other parts of New England. “The year of photography reminded me of the time in my teens when I shot many photos as I wandered the coast from both sides of the tide.”

Vincent, grew up near Halibut Point and spent many hours hiking around the oceanfront  and sailing. He is the grandson of artists Kenneth and Elizabeth Vincent and the nephew of marine painter Peter Vincent. “I was lucky, I started my artistic career painting and mimicking my family and other great artists in the Cape Ann area, but very early on I started taking photos and working in my grandfathers darkroom. That is where the magic of photography began for me.”

COASTLINE, Vincent states, is more than a new series of photographs. “It’s the beginning   of my study of the New England coast that I have been working on for the last 25 years.”

The photography show, COASTLINE – The New Works of Eoin Vincent, will be at the Rockport Art Association from October 14th to 25th, with an opening reception on October 14th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Open to the public.

Photos from a Gloucester photographer

I’ve been mostly staying indoors for over a week to get over a cold, so I don’t have many new photos of Gloucester itself ready to post. So, these are not photos of Gloucester, but they are still relevant because they are photos by a Gloucester photographer – i.e., a few of photos from my vacation in New York.

Flatrocks Gallery’s grand re-opening show, Modern Masters of Cape Ann, presents the work of five accomplished painters in a lively visual debate. Long time colleagues Ralph Coburn, Bob Anderson, Joy Halsted, Roger Martin and Oliver Balf have challenged, consoled, and inspired one another for decades. This show provides unique insight into the long term friendships that helped each artist, in his or her unique way, redefine the art of Cape Ann.  Don’t miss this opportunity to view and collect the work of these regionally and nationally important modern masters. We are also proud to represent fine craftspeople-Slim Larsen,  Brad Story, Martin Ray, John Kuykendall furniture makers & sculptors; Anni Melanson and Tina Buchs potters; Karen Drazen, Clapping Waves Studio, KKatLarge, Barbara Erkkila and Melle Finelli  jewelers. We are open Tues-Sun 11am – 5 pm, and we’ll be open for Columbus Day.

Goetemann Artists in Residency Program

That this is the 8th year of the Goetemann Residency Program?  The quality of the applications submitted continues to rise and there has been an increase in our geographical range.  Applicants come not only from the Boston area, state of MA and New England, but now there are many more national and international candidates.

Painter Viktor Valasek is a native of Czechoslovakia and has a Master’s Degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He studied at Cooper Union in NYC in 2009 and his work from that time was included in an Exchange Students Exhibition. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions including at Trafo Gallery and AVU gallery both in Prague. He is currently a resident artist at Meetfactory, a center of contemporary art in Prague.

Do take the opportunity to visit the Goetemann Residency this month and meet the current resident artist, Victor Valasek from Prague, Czech Republic.  Victor is charming, worldly and inspired, and his work will definitely make you stop and think.  The series he is working on during his month-long stay on Rocky Neck is of paintings over other works, thereby recycling something no longer wanted.  A number of the canvases were donated by artists on Rocky Neck of paintings that we no longer wanted and were willing to “throw away”.  Instead they have become something new and wonderfully incorporated into a Victor Valasek painting.  Having had the opportunity to paddleboard one night with Victor and get to know him a little, and then to visit him at the residency, I can certainly say that he is one young man you do not want to miss the opportunity of meeting, and of seeing his work.  He is at the Residency located at Kismet Wharf, 51A Rocky Neck Ave. most afternoons.  His studio talk will be on Wednesday, October 3 at 7:00 pm.   You can see more of his work on his website at www.viktorvalasek.com.

Gloucester Art news 2: Tuesday, October 2nd, 7PM, City Hall

The exciting process for commissioning NEW public art for the Gloucester HarborWalk is off and running! At the direction of Mayor Carolyn Kirk and the Community Development Department, the Gloucester Committee for the Arts has been asked to plan and implement the process for selecting a work, or works, of public art to be installed that were inspired by Gloucester and the HarborWalk.

Gloucester’s Committee for the Arts is hosting a dynamic introduction session and encourages you to attend. Committee members suggest that people, “Please come a bit early to bring and pin up any image of public art that you are (or aren’t) keen for, so that we can assemble a lively backdrop for the evening’s discussions.” City Hall’s stellar murals will inspire and connect us, too.

The session is designed for artists who may be considering responding to the City’s eventual request for submissions. Come to learn about the selection process, review general guidelines, hear themes of the architect’s vision, view examples of other public art installations, and be part of the unfolding plans. This is to be public art created for our unique environment and the artist’s response to it.

You don’t have to be an artist to come. Hearing and participating in the discussions about ideas for art in the public realm are part of the pleasures of seeing commissioned projects brought to completion. This process will occur over a period of many, many months and involve visits, interactions and working in conjunction with many. The ideas and debates around art, public space, and culture add enormously to our enjoyment and our community –and are already very Gloucester . Be part of it!

For those unable to attend or who have questions, visit www.ghwalk.org or email gharborwalk@gmail.com (subject line public art)
