Back by popular demand, the Power of Play festival will be returning to Gloucester High School’s Benjamin Smith Field house on Sunday, March 24th, and is open to all Gloucester Public School District students and their families. Featuring fun for all ages, the program will include arts and crafts activities, giant board games, Legos, field games, family games, yoga, dance and much more.

The GOLDEN GOOSE AWARDS
Written and Directed by Katie Oberlander | Harborlight Montessori Experience Weeks
This performance culminates a two-week course bringing students to Gloucester Stage Company (GSC) for an intensive experience in theatre production, on stage and backstage. In addition to acting, students participate in all aspects of production, including box office management, lighting and set design, auditions and casting, costumes and props. Actors, assistant directors, stage managers, designers, and marketing and sales are all part of what it takes to stage an original production, which is what the students do on the GSC stage as the culmination of their theatre experience.
The GOLDEN GOOSE AWARDS is a World Premiere play written by Katie Oberlander (Mastermime, Out of Circulation), presented at Gloucester Stage Company Friday, March 22 at 7:00pm and Saturday, March 23 at 2:00pm. The show is approx. 80 minutes. Tickets are $15 and Students $8 – available online:

Join us as we wrap up the maple sugaring season with our Spring Flapjack Fling. Bring your family and friends for this special breakfast and enjoy the fruit (OK, sap!) of our labor and our maple trees on some delicious pancakes. Flapjacks with our own maple syrup, along with fruit, orange juice, coffee, tea, and milk are on the menu.

Adventureman Arrival Time Updated
In order to allow Adventureman ‘s family and friends in the UK easier access to his Super US Run finale, his planned finish time has been adjusted to 4 PM at the Fisherman’s Memorial on the boulevard. If you plan to run with Adventureman from Stage Fort Park, you should plan to be in place by 3:30 PM. He would especially appreciate any children who want to join him there or along the boulevard.
After I have consulted with Adventureman regarding times to be at Hammond Castle or in Manchester to accompany him on those segments, I will share his best advice ASAP.
All are invited to encourage him along the route–starting near Robert Sweeney Park in Manchester By the Sea; following 127 to Hesperus to Hammond Castle to Stage Fort Park to boulevard and Fisherman’s Memorial Statue. We are hoping for a big gathering on the boulevard.
We also encourage you to consider a donation to assist sick children in getting needed treatments by clicking here. That’s what this huge run has been all about for Jamie Adventureman McDonald!

When we started the Bridge Deck we wanted to offer up a great waterfront restaurant where you could get outside, enjoy the views, come by boat and have a good time with your friends and family. As owners, our vision was to be inviting for all guests and enjoy our marina, hotel, restaurant and a casual place to chill on the water.
The last few seasons the Bridge Deck catered to A LOT of guests, to the extent in the height of our season, it became too much to really make sense. We found ourselves quickly hiring excess staff, fixing damages to our property, fielding complaints and overall more expense just to handle the…

#supermoon MARCH SUPER FULL WORM MOON DESCENDING WITH GLOUCESTER CITY HALL
The full Worm Moon descending aligned with City Hall this morning.
On my way to give a Monarch talk in Boston this morning I caught the full Worm Moon setting. It was gorgeous and the air was perfectly still, which would have been ideal for filming. I was trying to take some footage, but my tripod wasn’t cooperating. This was the last super moon of 2019 and is extra special because today’s full super moon also coincides with the vernal equinox (also my son’s birthday!). The last time this happened was in 1905, over one hundred years ago. The next time a super moon will be seen with the spring equinox is in the year 2044.
March’s full moon has many names including Crow Moon, Eagle Moon, Sugar Moon, Sap Moon, Crust Moon, and Lenten Moon. Don’t you prefer any of these other names over Worm Moon; I especially love Eagle Moon and Sugar Moon.

Little River Volunteer Fish Counters Needed!
The Lily Pond and the Little River host a small, but resilient population of river herring. These fish, alewives and blueback herring, migrate from the ocean to the Lily Pond, spawn and then return to the sea. The young fish head downstream in late summer. This is one of the few “runs” remaining on the North Shore, and also one of the oldest in the commonwealth. We would like to know more about when and how many fish travel upstream every year. You can help us by volunteering to count fish as they migrate upstream to the Lily Pond from the Little River.
River herring provide important forage for cod fish, bluefish, tuna and striped bass….all important commercial, recreational and sport fish for the City of Gloucester. Each spring the City of Gloucester hosts a river herring count at the top of the fish ladder by the West Gloucester Water Filtration Plant. Volunteers monitor the once a year spawning run from the Atlantic Ocean This is a wonderful activity for families, scouts, home schoolers, youth and adult groups….. suitable for all ages!
Volunteering is simple and requires as little as ten minutes of your time.
The count runs from April 1st to May 30 th .
There will be an informational training session held on Monday, March 25, 2019 at 6 PM in the first floor conference room at 19 Harbor Loop, Gloucester, and a field training session on Saturday March 30 at 10 AM at the West Gloucester Water Filtration Plant at 372 Magnolia Ave, Gloucester.

E-cigarettes pose serious health risks for kids. “The U.S. Surgeon General has found that youth use of nicotine in any form – including e-cigarettes – is unsafe, causes addiction and can harm the developing adolescent brain, affecting learning, memory and attention. Studies also show that young people who use e-cigarettes are more likely to become cigarette smokers.”
Use of Electronic Cigarettes by Teenagers is On the Rise – According to a survey supported by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) “E-cigarette use among high school students had skyrocketed from 1.5 percent in 2011 to 16 percent in 2015 (a more than 900 % increase.)

The Golden Goose Awards at Gloucester Stage
Thirty-five Harborlight Montessori 4th-8th Grade students have taken up residency at Gloucester Stage Company for two weeks. As one of Harborlight’s new Experience Week programs, this group of students has been learning all aspects of theater production in preparation for their World Premiere performances of The Golden Goose Awards. The Golden Goose Awards was written by Harborlight’s very own Performing Arts Director and published playwright, Katie Oberlander. The collaboration between the staff at Gloucester Stage and the staff of Harborlight Montessori has come to life with this fantastic Theater Education experience. Tickets to the 3/22 and 3/23 performances are available for purchase on Gloucester Stage Company’s website.
This two-week theater education session is one of several options that Harborlight students, as well as students not currently enrolled at Harborlight, can select from to supplement their academic year coursework. Robust Experience Weeks have been carefully designed to enhance students’ learning and provide them enriching opportunities during typical school vacation weeks. Harborlight is thrilled to be working with some amazing community partners….like, in this exciting case, Gloucester Stage Company!

One Week Til Adventureman Arrives!
We have some of the details of Adventureman Jamie McDonald’s arrival here in Gloucester firmed up as he finishes his AMAZING Super US Run right here next week Wednesday March 27. We hope you can join us.
Adventureman has been running around the perimeter of the United States raising money for the care and treatment of sick children. For more information or to donate, click here. He decided to end his run here in Gloucester Massachusetts, in part because his hometown is Gloucester England. We are proud to welcome him to town.
He is scheduled to arrive Wednesday March 27 finishing this epic run around 4:30 PM at the Fisherman’s Memorial Statue on the boulevard. All are welcome to join us at the statue or along his route coming on 127 near Manchester to Hesperus through Stage Fort Park and up the boulevard. We are seeking runners and spectators to encourage him throughout.
Runners are welcome to join him for the final 6 miles, though that meeting spot and time has yet to be determined (likely in or near Manchester By the Sea). Runners can also chose to meet him at the Hammond Castle parking lot for the 2.25 mile run to the Man at the Wheel (time also TBA). OR runners (and especially children) are encouraged to meet up at Stage Fort Park (probably by 4 PM or so) for the very last .7 miles of his Super US Run. Wouldn’t you like to be part of this?
Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken has been instrumental in communicating and arranging plans with Adventureman’s team. There will be a brief ceremony at the statue, then Jamie wishes to put the final touch to the end of his journey by touching the Atlantic Ocean on Pavilion Beach. Then off to the Beauport Hotel for a reception.
Jamie has expressed worries that “no one will be there” in Gloucester to welcome him. Let’s get out there and cheer him on Wednesday March 27 4:30 (ish) at the Fisherman’s Memorial. Hoping to see you there! Say hello and cheers if you see him around town:
