Cape Ann Whale Watch

I made a big mistake in my earlier post about my whale watch this week. I went out with Cape Ann Whale Watch, not Capt. Bills as I stated. I tried to update the post to reflect this but it may not show the correction. I have been out with Capt. Bill before and had a grand experience, as I have with any local whale trip. My sincere apologies. Thanks to Cape Ann Whale Watch and Capt. Bills!

Nichole’s Picks 10/13 + 10/14

So many fantastic things going on this weekend right on Cape Ann!   Take advantage of some of it for sure!

Pick #1: Rockport’s Harvest Fest

Saturday, October 13th 10:00-5:00, Downtown Rockport

About the Festival

The annual Rockport Harvestfest celebration features the best regional bounty of the season — all in an unbeatable setting.

Take the train to Rockport and start your Harvestfest experience with the makers’ shops at Whistlestop Mall. Head downtown to T-Wharf for local beer and a showcase of food producers and growers. Enjoy all that Rockport has to offer: beaches, parks, shops, galleries, and restaurants as we celebrate New England  at Harvestfest.

New England food producers gather on one of Rockport’s historic working wharves to celebrate the best of local food with fresh lobster, chowder, pastries, grass-fed beef, wood-fired pizza, small-batch jams, locally-grown produce and more. Craft beers  produced in Massachusetts are on hand, along with Rockport’s own Twin Lights, with soda crafted from the 120-year-old company’s original recipes. Cooking demonstrations take place throughout the day demonstrating the riches of harvest in New England.

Harvestfest features plenty of live bluegrass, jazz, folk, indie rock, cooking demos, a farm expo, and plenty of activities for families.

A Whale of a Trip!

Last April, I had an amazing early-season whale watching experience which I shared here on the blog. The weather was amazing this week so I thought I’d try a late season trip.  Cape Ann Whale Watch had a spot available, so off I went, wondering how this trip might go.

You never know what you are going to get, but when you are in good hands, there’s a decent chance you’ll have a memorable experience.  Captain Johnny, Jamie (naturalist), Nancy (educator), Dylan and Connor (crew) came through with flying colors!

The highlight of the trip for me was the mother and calf humpbacks putting on quite a show of whale behavior for us: most spectacularly lob tailing and pec/fin slapping. The mother humpback slapped the water with her tail probably a dozen times in quick succession. The loud noise this created must have rung the ears of that calf like a bell! Impressively, the calf was slapping the water with its fin as though it was trying to imitate mom.  Jamie informed us scientists aren’t sure why these behaviors occur but it was fascinating regardless.

Perhaps if you live on Cape Ann, you haven’t taken this trip in a while, but you really should consider one sometime soon!
