SAM NOVELLO

The Capt Novello may be the last of the family fishing vessels – once fleets – that fueled Gloucester’s rise over three and half centuries, providing the economic engine for its citizens and fish for much of America. Unlike the American cowboy, the fishing Captain is no longer recognized for his independence, courage, and hard work; instead he is now demonized by environmentalists and punished by regulators for the imaginary crime of harvesting fish in the maze of a changing environment and irrational regulation.
I will always remember my experience sailing on the Captain Novello – the serenity of the sea broken by the frenzy of birds and fish when the net is hauled back, and the sight of the welcoming harbor when we pulled around the Eastern Point light. This is a unique opportunity for a rewarding experience sailing with the finest fishing captain on the Gulf of Maine. I would only wish that NOAA recognize the value of preserving these fishing families as well as the fish – something that can be achieved through more intelligent management.
