SNOWY OWL BUBO HAS A BOOBOO -By Kim Smith

Although Bubo appears to have an injury surrounding his left eye, it did not seem to affect his ability to see. I sent a photo yesterday to Erinn Whitmore and both she and Jodi Swenson confirmed that he’s probably okay at this point.

This afternoon he flew into Hedwig’s territoy, which had been hers all day, and after an aerial battle took place, he claimed her rock. I don’t know if it’s the light but Bubo’s eye does not look any better today. The crows and seagulls are vicious and unrelenting towards the Snowies, other raptors don’t want them in their territory, and they are battling each other–it’s easy to understand how an eye could become injured. Posting photos tomorrow of the Snowy battle.

When the Students Become the Teachers

Cape Ann Youth Hockey would like to extend A big THANK YOU to Coach Geary and the Gloucester High School hockey team for spending their Saturday morning with the Learn to Skate crew.

What a great experience for the skaters,  both young and old.  Many of those same Gloucester Fisherman started pushing milk crates around in that very same program!  How special for them to return and share their time and talents with this year’s youngest skaters as they gain confidence and skill.  No doubt those young skaters will remember it for a long time to come!

Shutdown in Salem

Since it was kind of grey and wet, we decided to take a ride to Salem which has been on our list of inclement weather activities.  Strike One: the Peabody Essex Museum was closed—-and I think we’ve made that mistake once already…….

Off we go to the Salem Maritime National Historic Site.  What’s that you say?  Government shutdown???  Parks open but no staff or amenities???  Strike Two although just wandering around reading the signs was pretty interesting by itself.

Oh well, let’s look at the map and decide what next.  The New England Pirate Museum sounds interesting and it’s right here.  Oh…….Strike Three “Closed for the season”…..you would think with the federal government shutdown, those pirates would need someplace to go.

 

It was a very quiet Monday in Salem and I found myself really wishing I had a drone…..

I’m thinking the FAA would probably come right to life if I’d tested this NO DRONE ZONE out.

Part 2 of our Fermentation Workshop is this Thursday from 6-8pm.  Join us at Pigeon Cove Ferments kitchen where we will be making our own sauerkraut! Missed part 1? No problem! Having a staycation during February break and looking for a way to keep the kids entertained?

Backyard Growers is hosting three days of children’s workshops during February break for children grades K-5 packed with hands-on activities. Each day children will learn and discover more about food and gardening though activities such as: grinding wheat to flour, making and painting with plant dyes, holding and learning about worms, dressing up like a plant, and more!
