The balance of the risk of irreparable harm to the petitioner and the respondent in light of each party’s chance of success on the merits weighs in favor of the petitioner. Packaging Industries Group, Inc. v. Cheney, 380 Mass. 609, 615-617 (1980). The injunction shall expire on December 11, 2017. Prior to the expiration of the injunction, the Attorney General’s Office may move to extend the injunction with a date certain by which the investigation will be completed. (Trainor, J.). This 11th hour move is not the last word on the case.  Stay tuned!

On Monday, November 13, 2017, collectors CAN purchase Martin Johnson Heade’s Crimson Topaz Hummingbirds from Sotheby’s.

But not Norman Rockwell’s Shuffleton’s Barbershop, or any of the Berkshire Museum 40, for now.

Studs Terkel’s American Century: An Evening of Stories

Coming to you on November 17 & 18 from the Cape Ann Theatre Collaborative—an interactive evening of music & storytelling from Studs Terkel’s famous book, My American Century.Take a seat at Studs’ Place and hear the tales of a real-life 1920s Chicago hoodlum, a boy who rode the rails in the Depression, a high society photographer, a U.S. Marine veteran of WWII, and more.

Our cast of North Shore stalwarts includes Doug Brendel as Studs Terkel, Ben Reed as Doc Graham, Carolyn Aliskevicz as Eva Barnes, Nathan Arroyo-Long as Ed Paulsen, David Prentice as Jerome Zerbe, Sheryl Reed as Peggy Terry, Lauren Ashly Suchecki as Betty Basye Hutchinson, Eric Cheung as Peter Ota, and Paul Philpy as E.B. Sledge.

This is an open event with no reserved tickets and wine & beer will be available. The suggested donation is $20 to cover the cost of the theatre rental & rights; any excess will be donated to The Open Door and Cape Ann Veterans Services. Many of the stories come from Hard Times and The Good War, so we’re very pleased to be supporting these causes!

Look who I ran into at Whole Foods in Lynnfield on my way home from work today. That Nutty Redhead, also known as Lisa Griffiths, isn’t so nutty after all–her business is doing fantastically and you can find her at Whole Foods, gourmet shops, online on Amazon, and on her website at thatnuttyredhead.com.  

Today she was serving acorn squash with almond praline topping, drizzled with maple syrup. The recipe is on the back of the New England Praline with Seas Salt package. Congratulations to Lisa on the wonderful success of That Nutty Redhead.
Looking forward to seeing more deliciousness from That Nutty Redhead!

Who Brought the Magic for a great cause?

I don’t think that there are many individual YMCA or towns that could pull this fundraiser off so well. They don’t have Rick Doucette and the rest of the great staff in Gloucester or such a ridiculous abundance of local foodie establishments and culture. Today we observe Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day and meant to note the anniversary of the end of World War I.  I’m a little fascinated by World War I, mostly because it was 100 years ago (a nice round number) and I’m a little surprised we don’t hear more about this anniversary.

This is an article from the Gloucester Daily Times Nov 9 1917 noting the Sawyer Grammar school’s 85 member Roll of Honor of alumni serving the war effort as members of the military.

I see many familiar Gloucester surnames on this list, including at least one relative.  Family stories indicate he was “never right” after he came back from the war, sadly not unusual then or today.  Many years later he was driven to commit suicide and it was supposed his war service had an impact on his decision to end his life.

It’s when military service gets personal like this that makes days like Veterans Day so meaningful.  Veterans Day may be observed today, but is actually tomorrow November 11.  If you can, fly your flag over the weekend.  Let me know if any of these names have stories you’d like to share.

Symposium at the Meetinghouse: ‘PRESERVATION & SUSTAINABILITY?’

This is a community Symposium presented by the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation and its clean energy initiative TownGreen/2025 on Saturday afternoon November 11th, 2-6:00pm.

The event will explore whether preservation of our older homes and historic civic buildings is compatible the goal of becoming “green” through expert presentations, responses from a distinguished panel, and Q&A with the audience.

Cape Ann is actively pursuing two goals that are sometimes viewed as separate or opposed.  One is for the preservation of Cape Ann’s historic buildings and homes, especially as Gloucester’s 400th anniversary approaches in 2023.  The other is to seek alternate sources of clean energy, minimize consumption, and reduce our overall carbon footprint to counter the global forces of climate change.

We explore many aspects of the basic question:  Can preservation and sustainability can be complementary rather than competitive goals?
