Art Haven Buoy Auction Tonight at Cruisport

My husband is whacked!

Ok, so I love a little adventure…but my husband really has lost it.  Neil has spent a few years hoping to get on the list to be able to head to the Mt. Washington Observatory in the winter which is something that has been on his “bucket list” for a while. He is going to spend 2 days and 1 night at the Mt. Washington Observatory hiking around and with any luck he’ll get some photos of a lifetime! It’s about 6288 feet above sea level and a 4.25 mile ascent up the mountain in a snow cat. The good news today is that the weather right now is pretty mild…only 92 mph winds and -22 windchill lol! The list of items he has to bring is lengthy and should he not have the right gear when he gets there they will not let him up, so he’s been researching and acquiring his gear for about 2 months now. He has been told to be prepared to extend his stay should they not be able to get him down. Where will I be while I wait for him to return? In front of a warm toasty fireplace with a good book!!

Here’s a pano I took a year or so back and you can see where the observatory sits.

Cape Ann License Plates Have Arrived

The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce has BIG news – Cape Ann’s special license plate has arrived at Registry branch offices and are ready to be picked up and put on the road.  The nearly 950 area drivers who pre-applied for the new special plates are now receiving calls and letters with instructions as to where to exchange their current plates and pick up their new Cape Ann license plates.

Those who did not pre-apply but would like to obtain their own Cape Ann license plates can do so online at https://secure.rmv.state.ma.us/SpecialPlates/pltShow.aspx?Plate=027.

“We are very grateful to Senator Bruce Tarr, and Representatives Ann-Margaret Ferrante and Brad Hill for their leadership in enacting key amendments to the Special Plate law,” said Ken Riehl, CEO of the Cape Ann Chamber

“The Cape Ann license plate is not only a tremendous way to strengthen and promote our regional identity, but it will also generate funds that will be involved in our future.  Like many such plates, it faced a major obstacle in getting enough pre-subscriptions for approval,” said Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R- Gloucester).  “Now, we have legislatively removed that obstacle, and the plate can go to work for our communities.”

“The Cape Ann license plate will be one more in a growing list of ways we increase our visibility and sense of community,” State Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante (D-Gloucester) said in a statement on Thursday. “The more people know about the uniqueness of Cape Ann, the more our small businesses and our Cape thrive as new visitors and potential residents explore our main streets.”  State Representative Brad Hill (R-Ipswich) added: “The implementation of these Cape Ann license plates is a wonderful way to celebrate both our communities and our identities. Not only do they promote the character of our area as a whole, but they will also allow for further improvement of our Cape Ann communities.”

For those who have not yet signed up, now is the time: “Proceeds from the Cape Ann license plates will go back to the Cape Ann community towards promotion of the region, economic development, and education / training. The funds will be managed by a new 501c3 non-profit called the Cape Ann Community Foundation (CACF), whose Board of Directors consists of residents from all four Cape Ann Communities. ” noted Sara Young, President of the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

For more information, please contact the Cape Ann Chamber at (978) 283-1601, email them at info@capeannchamber.com, and / or go to the Cape Ann License Plate website: www.lovecapeann.com.

WE DID IT!

YOUR CAPE, YOUR PLATE…

THE NEW CAPE ANN LICENSE PLATE IS HERE!

We are thrilled to announce that Massachusetts’ newest special plate, the Cape Ann License Plate, is now here!

Thanks to all of you who have supported this worthy endeavor. In addition to showing your love of Cape Ann every day, the $40 special plate fee (payable every other year with your registration renewal) is a charitable donation that will be directed to the Cape Ann Community Foundation and used to support regional promotion, economic development and education for Cape Ann.

We are so excited to know that these fabulous plates are now on the road!

Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument Maker Exhibit extended through March 5, 2017

voicing-woods-three

The curator’s job sounds relatively simple: just surprise us. Show us something we haven’t seen before, or lately, or in such depth, or with such clarity. Try to avoid the predictable and familiar, the market approved or academically sanctioned, or what other curators have already done. Try to step outside your museum’s comfort zone or carefully manicured institutional persona with something eccentric, an intuitive leap. After all, there is plenty of art out there.
—Roberta Smith, “Museums Embrace the Unfamiliar” New York Times, September 16, 2016

The current exhibition at the Cape Ann Museum would be music to Ms. Smith’s ears. Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument Maker is the unpredictable, eccentric delight she calls for. Indeed, the Museum has leaped forward with its intuition that Mr. Adams’s peerless craftsmanship has exactly the genius and beauty for the rapture of an unsuspecting public. And from all accounts, its public has agreed!

A formal lyricism in this exhibition commands attention to more than one art form. From the fabrication of brass hinges to bone keys (not to mention the skunk-tail sharps and cow-toenail couplers!), to sculptural stands and the exacting, exquisite joinery that must move unerringly to create music, the show reveals the prodigious skill and artistry of Jeremy Adams, one of the most gifted musical instrument makers in the United States. Meticulously presented in the Museum’s largest gallery, the exhibition showcases an impressive selection of harpsichords inspired by Flemish and French designs of the 17th and 18th centuries, a chamber organ, a clavichord, a demonstration organ chest, and a beautiful, witty silent keyboard, all built in their entirety by Adams in his Danvers, Massachusetts atelier. Curated from over 40 instruments built since the 1960s, these works reside in public and private collections around the world. The exhibit’s centerpiece is the stunning French (Blanchet) double-manual harpsichord with its very modern stand, which emerged from the Adams workshop this summer and is featured in events for the duration of the exhibit, sometimes in tandem with other instruments in the room. Also in the gallery, Paul Cary Goldberg’s elegant photographs, commissioned by the Museum, document the Adams workshop—the tools, details, atmosphere and the droll, quirky personality from which the instruments come. Dennis Brennan tonight! Dave’s Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line 8:30pm 1.26.2017

dave sag

OK, girls, this is it. You’ve been tearing at my clothes amid great wailing and gnashing of tooth ,begging me to bring him back, so , here he is: Mr. Dennis Brennan. Truly a national treasure, undiscovered and under-appreciated, this cat writes some great toons, can sing his ass off, plays a mean harmonica and has a great hat collection, to boot. I mean this! Hopefully I’ll get him to sneak in some of his self-penned doozies between the really cool blues he’s known for.
