This place just makes you smile!  If you are in the area and just want a feel good moment, stop by Colby Farms in Newbury, MA and wander over to their Sunflower Field.  You can check out their Facebook page and get updates on the blooms.   As of 9/2 the field was about 25% in bloom so I’m sure this week they will be at peak.   Our friends at Colby Farm are great to do this each year so make sure if you go, don’t pick the flowers and be respectful of the area.   Their farm stand is right next door so pop in and show them some love!   Enjoy some pics below of my visits the last couple years.

There seemed to be fewer schooners this year, probably because of the approach of Hurricane Hermine.

And some of the schooners seemed to skip the inner harbor altogether, thus avoiding my camera.

My boys finally head back to school today.  And, while I worked off and on all summer, officially so do I.  As someone who has always worked in the field of education, I’ve ALWAYS gone back to school.  Every September, for 40 years,…I have had a 1st Day of School.  So, never having experienced sending the boys back to school…without actually going with them…I get a kick out of the parents who celebrate the end of summer and the big day. Genuinely.  I love this compilation of parents celebrating the big day in creative ways.

Gloucester Cinema continues with the second event in the opera series.  The live performance of CARMEN, performed in by the English National Opera (ENO) Company during its 2015 season, was filmed at the London Coliseum. 

The mission of the English National Opera is to make opera current and interesting to the masses and to do so it is creating affordable and relatable English language operatic performances. CARMEN, which includes the famous Toreador song that everyone will recognize, is for a more mature audience.  Gilbert and Sullivan’s comedic PIRATES OF PENZANCE (the third in the series) can be considered multi-generational.  It should appeal and be enjoyable watching to anyone curious about opera.  Opera in Gloucester is a rare treat.  It is not often that you have the opportunity to see solid performances of famous programs at the ticket prices of $10 children and seniors and $12 for adults.  The Gloucester Cinema offers plenty of free parking and easy access to the theater.

With a run time of just under three hours, CARMEN, a passionate tale of an naïve soldier and a fiery gypsy (Carmen).  The stunning performance is the backdrop for French composer Georges Bizet’s dazzling score which evokes all the sounds and sizzling atmosphere of Spain through some of the opera’s most famous melodies, from Carmen’s seductive ‘Habanera’ to the Toreadors’ stirring parade.

Check out the Carmen trailer to see how captivating this opera promises to be and why European audiences have loved this film.. Carmen will be playing Sunday 9/11 at 10 p.m. and Thursday 9/15 at 7 p.m.

Pirates of Penzance is scheduled to play Sunday, October 2 and Thursday, October 6.  The trailer touches on the highlights of a swashbuckling farce of brilliant humor and razor-sharp wit, it’s chock-full of memorable melodies, including the famous tongue-twisting patter song from the Major-General.

The life and accomplishments of Eleanor Raymond (1887–1989), a pioneering woman in the field of architecture during the mid-20th century, will be the subject of a talk presented by documentary film maker Lyda Kuth. A graduate of the Cambridge School of Art and Landscape Architecture for Women, Eleanor Raymond was a noted innovator partnering with solar energy researcher Dr. Maria Telkes to design one of the first successful solar-heated buildings in the Northeast. On Cape Ann, Raymond designed homes for artist Natalie Hays Hammond, anthropologist Carlton S. Coon and a summer cottage for herself overlooking Gloucester’s outer harbor. Lyda Kuth is an independent filmmaker and Executive Director of the LEF Foundation, which supports New England independent documentary filmmakers. She has been recognized by the Massachusetts Cultural Council with the prestigious Commonwealth Award and honored by Women in Film and Video New England with an Image Award.
