My View of Life on the Dock
It’s that time of year where just about everybody could use a good pressure washer. This one is the Deal Of The Day On Amazon-
The temps were a bit chilly yesterday but it was still a great day at the beach! Lot of peeps and pups enjoying the awesome day :D.
I took the boys to swim with the manatees on Friday down in Crystal River, Florida. I did it during a solo camping trip that I took a couple of years before Thatcher was born and I’ve been looking forward to sharing the experience with them for several years now. They’re at a pretty good age for some more adventurous experiences and they’re both pretty brave….which makes life fun. It also seemed appropriate for Earth Day as the very endangered Florida manatees are making a pretty significant come back.
We met up with River Ventures, a company I would gladly recommend to anyone interested…or even those who aren’t, and participated in a quick classroom discussion about manatees and how to safely navigate the waters to snorkel with them, before boarding our boat. We had a great day and I’m thrilled the boys not only had the experience, but enjoyed it as much as I did.
The material in the short video below is from our trip. The photos in the gallery are favorites provided by River Ventures from past days. During Florida’s colder months, the manatee population in that area hang out in a warm spring…which makes for much better viewing and even more up close and personal encounters. My first time was in the spring and I’ll never forget it. While this time we were in murkier water in the larger body of the lake, experiencing it with the boys made it even more unforgettable.

Cedar Rock Gardens is an 18.5 acre farm conveniently located at 299 Concord Street, in Gloucester, a few short miles off Route 128. Plants and produce grown only at Cedar Rock Gardens are sold here, with a wide offering of organic veggies, herbs, and gorgeous flowers.
You may recognize co-owners Elise Jillson and Tucker Smith from the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market. Operating retail sales at the farm is a first this year.
The welcoming handmade sign sets the scene. A modern farm, with its focus on organic practices, but the setting is pure old-time farm charm. Rambling stone walls delineate the fields of flowers, trays of seedlings are tucked under gnarled ancient apple trees, and an equally as distinguished catalpa tree grows alongside the drive as you enter the garden.

Elise and Tucker have many combined years of experience in organic farming. Read more about the two here. Opening the farm to the public is a new step for Cedar Rock Gardens in their growing business. I can’t wait to see what they’ll be offering in plants, as well as cut flowers, throughout the season (think peonies, zinnias, and sunflowers, to name only a few!). Midwestern humorist, cartoonist, and writer known best for his political commentary, Hubbard was a high school dropout who said his goal in life was to own a circus. He worked briefly as a silhouette artist and attended art school for a short time before beginning cartoon work for the Indianapolis News. For 25 years he drew the acclaimed cartoon “Abe Martin of Brown County” which went into syndication and made him nationally known. Will Rogers cited Hubbard as an influence and called him the greatest humorist of his time. My favorite Kin Hubbard quote which appeared here in an earlier post: “There are two ways to handle a woman, and nobody knows either of them.”
